The Swiftboating of Obama Is Already in Full Effect

Taylor Marsh: It's despicable but it's not surprising, because this is what wingnuts do best.

Swiftboating is something I know a lot about. I've written on it for years. The latest efforts by the wingnuts began in January with Fox "News" and Steve Doocy. It continued in February with the Malcolm X hit. In March it was Roger Ailes. April came Townhall. Now, as the primaries close in, it's the Washington Post.

Obama is being swiftboated yet again. It's despicable. It's not surprising, because this is what wingnuts do best. Get scurrilous whisper campaigns inside the hack pack press, long after they've been debunked. South Carolina is known for this stuff. That The Washington Post is revealing it through a long winding piece is journalism at its worst. If it came as a warning on what's on wingnut radio that would be one thing. But what it actually does is provide a platform for a rumor campaign, not to mention a preview of things to come for Democrats. It's John Kerry revisited, the religious version.

Conservative talk-show hosts have occasionally repeated the rumor, with Michael Savage noting Obama's "background" in a "Muslim madrassa in Indonesia" in June, and Rush Limbaugh saying in September that he occasionally got "confused" between Obama and Osama bin Laden. Others repeatedly use the senator's middle name, Hussein.

The rumors about Obama have been echoed on Internet message boards and chain e-mails.

Bryan Keelin of Charleston, S.C., who works with an organization of churches there, posted on an Internet board his suspicion that Obama is a Muslim. "I assume his father instructed him on the ways of being a Muslim," said Keelin, who described himself in an interview as a conservative Republican who will vote for former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee.

"The Muslims have said they plan on destroying the U.S. from the inside out," says one of the e-mails that was posted recently on a blog at BarackObama.com, the campaign's Web site, by an Obama supporter who warned of an attempt to "Swift Boat" the candidate. "What better way to start than at the highest level, through the President of the United States, one of their own!"

... ..

Foes Use Obama's Muslim Ties to Fuel Rumors About Him

Mr. Obama has to have a signed letter attesting to his Christian faith for assuage Iowa voters? Excuse me, but I'd tell them to go pound sand and so should Obama's team. The Post using this is disgusting. It's even worse than the flag pin hit.

Staggering lack of impulse control and messaging by the Post. But it gets worse.

Obama aides sharply disputed the initial stories suggesting that he was a Muslim, and in Iowa, the campaign keeps a letter at its offices, signed by five members of the local clergy, vouching for the candidate's Christian faith. Aware that his religious belief remains an issue, Obama has denied a separate charge: that he does not hold his hand to his heart during the Pledge of Allegiance. This rumor stemmed from a photo that was taken while the national anthem was being played.

The phony pledge picture was just another attempt to paint Obama as not sufficiently patriotic. I've never kept my hand over my heart while singing the national anthem.

Oh, and by the way, CBS has picked up the story. Our liberal media at work.

but I would think that anyone ignorant enough to believe those rumors is likely to vote for a Republican anyway.

this is so incredulous it defies comment! i sit here with my jaw hanging...

not black enough, not christian enough...next they'll tell us he's from mars and therefore not earthing enough...

that bill oh,really can't tell the difference between osama and obama speaks more about him than it does about either osama or obama (a note to help poor mr. o'reilly: maybe you should talk about these two men using either their surnames or their first names then you wouldn't get confused...you'd be talking about Osama and Barak or bin Laden and Obama)

alas, rumor is more powerful than truth...and i'm sure the rumor mill is just getting started...

Hey, I hear Osama, oops, I mean Obama, is part Black too. The right-wingers who help spread the rumor that Obama is part Muslim might as well spread the rumor that Obama is,...uh,...(whisper) not a pure-bred Anglo.
Well, at least the Black rumor is true.
Still, it is sickening that in America in the 21st Century the possibility that someone is Black, part-Black, or maybe not a fundie Christian is a liability when trying to get elected to office.
WHAT? Bigotry and intolerance in...(gasp) the US of A!? Well, now I have heard everything!

THis is just low. The reason i don't think he is ready is because of his lack of experince, NOT because of his race or religion

The Ultimate Blasphemy

Religious conservatives have a mean streak a mile wide, and a clear conscience, because they worship a petulant, vindictive, spiteful and violent God who orders genocide, human sacrifice and the death penalty for trivial offenses. They are intolerant of those who don't share their values or beliefs, and often hypocritical in persecuting those who do openly what they do secretly. It is this group that brought Reagan and the two Bushes to power and supported their corrupt, warmongering, middle and lower-class disenfranchising, covertly racist agenda that has brought our country to economic, moral and social ruin. Enough of them and their trailer-park theology that requires candidates to swear fealty to their appalling holy book. They proclaim, without irony, that Jesus is the Prince of Peace while mercilessly slaughtering innocent Afghans and Iraqis in their hundreds of thousands. It's the ultimate blasphemy.

I agree with all previous comments about how repugnant this is -- however, there is a part of me that wonders whether it's not a good thing that this is happening in the primaries. Why? We need to know how well Obama can take below-the-belt jabs before he's all we've got. Like it or not, a critical part of making it to the highest office in the land is surviving the Republican swiftboating machine. Maybe it will be good -- if he comes out on top now, he'll be harder to stop. If he can't take it, he might be a liability later on.

Repugs in '08 because...

They're way smarter campaigners than we are OR have been. Look at Florida--disenfranchising its own Democrats during the primary season! We should be fighting for EVERY VOTE--and then some--and yet Floridians who can't vote in the Dem primaries next year are gonna pull the plug on the rest of us. All the while screaming that: "We can't believe that our Democrats are so shallow on the issues,(!) that they'll stay home in '08 rather than oust these election-stealing Republicans (2 elections so far).

Well...looks like the Republicans' election-stealing is gonna stop in '08. Why? Cause we're GIVING them '08! Hey Dean--what happened to your original 50-state strategy? The one that got us '06??? If the Florida debacle was forced upon you THEN PUBLICIZE IT!!! And NOT from a position of weakness either! Be OUTRAGED at Fla Republicans! Make the nation see this (non-vote law against Dems) as SWIFTBOATING which it is! PLEASE fix this--all Americans want is to regain our country. DON'T GIVE REPUBLICANS OUR COUNTRY, BAD ENOUGH THEY STOLE IT TWICE BEFORE...

Here's something we can do

Rumors like this -- oh, f'r chrissake, let's just call it a damned silly assertion and lie-- leave you in a bind because you can't really respond directly. (You don't want to give it even more publicity).

That said, I might suggest those reading this here look at the Washington Post story. Check the byline. READ the story carefully (don't want to go into this unarmed) and call the reporter. (You can do this by calling the front desk and just asking for him/her assuming the email isn't attached to the story itself).

Then calmly, rationally explain why the story is flawed. It's pretty easy and while some reporters I know can be jerky about it others will take the point if it's made politely. Especially since the story violates some (to me anyway) pretty embarrassing points of both logic and journalism 101.

For instance, you could say that the writer should lead (or put in the second graf) that the story is plainly untrue and was debunked by CNN two years ago. By missing that, you have an incomplete story that doesn't hang together. Calling the Obama campaign doesn't cut it completely because it's like asking a candidate "So, is your guy secretly an illuminati/alien body snatcher/child molester?" It's so damned silly that of course you get a sputtering response as the poor staffer tries to stop from either laughing or choking on the fact that the reporter is so blindingly stupid.

Why call the reporter like that? Why be polite? Because it might, just might, convince him to change his ways, just a bit. Especially if you politely ask why he approached the story that way. Y'know, I'm a reporter, and we do rather like to talk about our work.

I haven't checked who wrote it. I hope it isn't anyone I know. But only if enough people from the other side call this guy and let him know then it won't change. Believe it or not reporters are very conscious of the fact that our names are attached to the stories we write. And we do respond to criticism from readers--or at least bear it in mind for the next time. The good ones, anyhow, and those of us who aspire to be good.

I'm talking about Ronald McDonald Reagan, the second-stupidest president of all time. He would spread another anecdote, one to the effect that Obama has a sister who's a Cadillac-driving welfare queen living off OUR hard-earned dollars. (We all know what race those welfare queens belong to, right?)

It doesn't matter what faith or lack of it

That's right. It doesn't matter what faith Obama has or claims to have. By his actions he shall be known, and that has to be the test. Unfortunately for B.O., he has little experience, and his words are echoes of of others who came before him. With Oprah finally out of the political closet as his main backer, we may see a cat fight between O.W. and Hillary, both vying for the power of the oval office. Edwards as the alternative? Not when he's perceived as being "too smarmy" to lead and unite the voters. Who then? The obvious choice, and the one that many more sensible people are warming to: Bill Richardson. Why? Because Richardson is the only one who seems to grasp that the REAL issue in 2008 and the years ahead is THE ENVIRONMENT BEYOND GLOBAL WARMING. The Environment as it effects schools and education, locally grown food vs the trade deficit, the dawn of the Solar Age because oil has peaked and oil costs countless lives, and we have JUST BEGUN to fight for it. Only Bill has the right idea of both the NECESSITY of making "going green" the highest priority of the next administration. Besides, he's got the experience that both Edwards and Obama lack.

What in the world is "trailer park theology"??? Never heard of that one. And what kind of a "trailer park" do you mean? The kind that has stationary mobile homes, or the kind that is a temporary place for trailers that are pulled behind trucks/cars, or what? And do all "trailer parks" have their own diety?

Wow! I'm really behind the times - and I read Alternet consistently! Please let me know what I can do or read so I can be "in the know" about all of these gods/theologies. I feel so humbled by my ignorance......

Who is in charge of swiftboating for the Democrats? Whoever it

The Huffington Post swiftboats nuclear power. It is impossible to
make a pro-nuclear power comment on the Huffington Post.

Obama is a pig in a poke (to use an old expression and if he is a crypto-Muslim my apologies for offending his sensibilities). He is clever and presents a good, rational appearance, but his father was a Muslim (even though typically his father left his mother almost immediately) and he lived a number of years as a child in a Muslim country. His relatives in Kenya are Muslims. The Koran holds non-believers in contempt to the extent that historically Muslims would not even send ambassadors of the Muslim faith into the Christian world, historically referring to it as the "House of War", this practice even being followed by the non-religious regime of Saddam Hussein with his Christian foreign minister. The money we feed to Saudi Arabia combined with the Wahabi sect of Islam has resulted in the first credible attempt to conquer the west since the Turks were defeated before Vienna in the 1690's. And if Obama were a Muslim mole, do you think these ruthless people would let us poor chumps know? So the bottom line is that when we have other candidates who do not raise these questions, however remote, it is simply irrational to take a chance on Obama. If he is a mole, not to make a pun, but read about the effects of the Mule in Asimov's "The Foundation Trilogy".
