Scandal-Plagued President of Evangelical University: "God Forced My Resignation"

Apparently god is one savvy attorney as well as an omniscient and all knowing creator. Given sufficient time to review the case against Roberts, god apparently decided Roberts lacked a plausible defense and forced him to resign.

I just love watching "fundies" use god to explain and justify their every action...whether it be good or bad. For those who haven't heard,Richard Roberts, the son of Oral Roberts, now reports that he resigned his position as President of Oral Roberts University because god told him he must (on Thanksgiving Day no less).

Apparently god wasn't speaking loud enough or Roberts was ignoring him while he and his family were milking the University to enable their lavish life of excess...or perhaps god was simply too busy at the time to tell him to stop. And by all means we can't have expected Roberts to do the right thing of his own accord. How would a man of god know the difference between right and wrong without proper consultation from the heavenly father? It just goes to show that heaven is understaffed and it's leading to all sorts of improprieties and numerous lost souls here on earth.

Richard Roberts told students at Oral Roberts University Wednesday that he did not want to resign as president of the scandal-plagued evangelical school, but he did so because God insisted.

Roberts told students in the university's chapel that God told him on Thanksgiving that he should resign the next day.

Roberts said he resisted the idea, and that "every ounce of my flesh said 'no,'" but he prayed over the decision with his wife, Lindsay Roberts, and his father, Oral Roberts, and decided to step down.

Roberts has previously said that God told him to deny the allegations. The week the lawsuit was filed, Richard Roberts said that God told: "We live in a litigious society. Anyone can get mad and file a lawsuit against another person whether they have a legitimate case or not. This lawsuit ... is about intimidation, blackmail and extortion."

Apparently god is one savvy attorney as well as an omniscient and all knowing creator. Given sufficient time to review the case against Roberts, god apparently decided Roberts lacked a plausible defense. I can't wait for god to impose a dollar amount to settle the lawsuit...and if past experience holds true, I'm sure god will insist Roberts deliver one of those tearful tell all confessions.

You see, without the oft seen mea culpa, how would Roberts be able to continue to live off of the donations of those who place far too much faith in mere mortals...manipulative mortals who have learned that one can do anything one wants as long as one attributes it to god's will?

Did I mention I'm in training to be a minister? And by the way, don't blame me, it was god's idea.

Someone has got to take his meds! Hearing voices again, are we?
(Next they will say that Richard Roberts IS God. They've already told President Bush that Bush is God, apparently. He's The Decider, you know.)

The Oral Tradition

Oral Roberts had already built a ministry, raised a nationwide following and founded a university by the time God spoke to him. It was an ultimatum, if I remember correctly: raise $32 million in one month or die (God was in the protection business, apparently). I hope Richard's legal advice didn't come with the same strings attached--he doesn't seem to work as well under pressure.

Example of the Christian Mindset

Conversation with my Born-Again (didn't get it right the first time) Christian Mother:

"Hey Mom, I heard about Rev. So and So bilking his flock out of kabillions of dollars. And Rev. Blah Blah Blah too. Why do you tithe 10% of every cent you make to these UN-Christian liars and thieves who, in God's name, steal from all you true believers?"

"Whether they steal or not, is not for us to judge, because God knows what's in your heart when you give, and that's all that matters."

Now what the fuck do you do with that type of mindset?

At least he's not saying God told him to steal the money. I'm sure he is trying to soften the blow as he falls, but at least he's not talking about what he did as an okay thing.

You may be fairly certain that the student body and the other administrators at Oral Roberts are now fervently praying to GOD that HE may relent and reverse his "advice" to Dickie Roberts so that Dickie may be persuaded (by Jesus, one supposes) to return and resume saving the souls of all at the University.

Haven't We Learned Anything?

After the Republicans set the bar so high for morality, honesty, family values, praising the Lord at every opportunity, only to have it come crashing down with a good deal of their own moral corruption, greed, outings, infidalities, I thought for sure we would finally get some honest dialog this election go around. But no, you get the absolute wretched Bible questions on debates, sanctimonious preachers praising God and saying "Follow me". What's worse the democrats are even joining the fray.

When will the whole bunch wake up? Are we not loud enough in our proclamation of "Enough"? I don't give a rip about twits such as Rev. Roberts, I don't give a tinker's dam if there are gays in the military, I could care less who gets married and who doesn't and to who. Damn it, I want to know if my children are going to be able to afford college, I would like to be assured before I die that a neighbor with spina bifida may have a chance at a more normal life with breakthrough research, I would like to be assured that my niece with cancer has a fighting chance at getting the best medical care that's out there.

Some people call these "kitchen table issues". What would you call it? Just wishful thinking?

Some people seem to forget, in their efforts to convince EVERYBODY IN THE WORLD that their position is THE ONLY ONE, that not everybody that disagrees with you, or believes something YOU don't---HAS to be the enemy.

So, once again, here I am, NOT a Vegan, NOT an athiest...but probably as progressive, left-wing libertarian as you can get without going off into the abyss, and my "like-minded liberals" are all over my still Christian, but NOT corrupt or ignorant ass.

With friends like some of y'all, who the hell needs enemies?? The non-vegetarian, non-vegan, non-athiest or agnostic left gets tired of being put on a par with Hitler, Stalin, Falwell, Robertson and other mass-market criminals. Could y'all PLEASE allow for some individual preferences? Some tolerance? Or is the Left going to become as intolerant and nasty-ass as the Far Right??

Oh sure he did. More like Oral and perhaps the district attorney insisted. The scope and depth of the religious rights ability to scam and con people into believing that they are Gods servants never ceases to amaze me.There is a place in hell for these charlatans.
