Is MSNBC All Tuckered Out?

Posted by Litbrit , Shakesville at 12:00 PM on November 27, 2007.

Litbrit: Rumor has it the network might be looking to dump Tucker Carlson, so his few fans are rallying to save him.

This post, written by LitBrit, originally appeared on Shakesville

It was probably at least a year ago when I e-mailed Melissa about one of her favorite (heh heh) teevee-talkers, the guy she'd poetically dubbed "a penis in a bowtie".

"Tucker is a changed man, M!" I wrote. "No more bowtie!"

Looks like we aren't the only non-fans. To paraphrase Frank Zappa, the price of gas is going up and Tucker's ratings are going down, which fact has not escaped the notice of network suits:

Olbermann's success doesn't mean that MSNBC is banking left. Officials there swear it. MSNBC Senior Vice President Phil Griffin has known Olbermann for more than two decades and says he's betting on his host's personality and sensibility, not his beliefs. It's a question of branding, he says.

"Keith Olbermann is our brand; Chris Matthews is our brand," Griffin says. "These are smart, well-informed people who have a real sense of history and can put things in context."

Clearly, though, the brand is evolving. Conservative Joe Scarborough is being moved to the morning to replace Don Imus. MSNBC opened talks -- since aborted -- with outspoken liberal comic Rosie O'Donnell. But what about MSNBC's other conservative talk-show host, Tucker Carlson? Is he part of that same brand?

"He is right now," Griffin says.

Tucker's audience--all two of them, and of course they're bloody Florida-based--is hoping to drum up a little support for the unbowed boor. Via TRex, behold the Save Tucker Carlson website:

This decision by MSNBC will silence a conservative voice, part of a move by MSNBC to swing left and become "FOX for the Liberals," dropping any pretense of objectivity or balance. Tucker Carlson is a conservative who brings a tone of civility and his unfailing good-humor to political talk television. Quirky and unpredictable, we love Tucker.

Good humor? Are they referring to Tucker's former costume? And I admit it, I laughed out loud at FOX for the Liberals. As TRex drily notes:

Things I secretly enjoy:

1. When Republicans inadvertently admit that Pox News is a GOP propaganda mill.

And:

Any guy willing to go on "Dancing with the Stars" and treat guests both left and right with spirited but congenial debate should not be purged in some ideological marketing plan.

2. When suddenly the Right's faith in free markets collapses like a federal levee because god forbid, one of their own is actually threatened. (See National Review Online and Lileks, James for further details.)

Guys, I hate to break it to you, but it's got nothing to do with ideology and everything to do with ratings. Tucker is the second lowest rated man in cable news. Only Glenn Beck ranks lower. Surely you see what the Free Market dictates here. He's not pulling his weight. He's just soaking up the television equivalent of welfare dollars. Off. With. His. Head.

Because people who won't pull their weight are just a drag on society, aren't they, Republicans? The way Ah wuz raised, you work hard, take care of your own, and you don't take handouts from nobody.

Someone should tell Mr. Never-Heard-a-Sentence-He-Didn't-Want-to-Interrupt that it's time to tighten that matching cummerbund.

Digg!

Alot of folks saw this twit for what he really is when he tried to lambast Jon Stewart for not conforming to "serious news" standards on his COMEDY SHOW!

As Stewart said "My lead-in is puppets making prank phone calls!"

Has anyone else noticed that when Tucker is repeating one of the really irrational Republican talking point his voice gets really shrill?

I can't stand watching Tucker anymore and I used to watch him alot. Mostly because I wanted to be fair and balanced and listen to other points of view than my own "biased, progressive, liberal" one. However, me thinks I must find another such source as I find Tucker to be arrogant, dis-respectful, and repetitive. He fails to listen to other points of view, constantly shrieking over guests and gives the impression that his opinion is the only one that matters and the only one correct.

Other than that, he's okay.

The Florida commentator talks about Carlson's "civility and his unfailing good-humor."

Really?

The kind he was displaying when he giggled on national t.v. about bashing the head of a man he claimed to be cruising him in a public bathroom?

That's civility for you--and good humor.

Carlson sickens me. He's the kind of man who thinks that by beating up a gay man and then boasting about it he claims some share of masculinity. Men like that strike me as not very sure of their own masculinity.

It's time for the whole lot of these "men" to go to cigar and scotch land where they can boast to one another about their bashings--O'Reilly, Carlson, Hannity, that bleating idiot with the blond hair and big mouth whose name I can't think of right now, who said that Bush was the kind of "real man" we need to run the country.

I watched Tucker back in the bow-tie days of "THE SPIN ZONE" during the debacle of Katherine Harris' set-up for Florida to "deliver" the Presidency to Georgie Jr.

He and Bill (last name I cannot recall) were quite humorous. Maybe it was because he WAS wearing a bow-tie?

Well, I will have to check it out and see if all the poorly attempted usage of linguistics (i.e. genital terminalogy so passe) is really warrented.

If so, I will return to confirm that he is a suppurating pustule of Republican toxins.

he is a freaking moron. I have seen him corrected for his idiotic statements on his own show (PBS one) by conservatives. He got blasted by Bill Maher over his comments that outcomes were worse in countries with socialized health care. And Jon Stewart took him down about his bowtie.

So if MSNBC wants to continue to have a reason to drive people from the right to the left, then they should keep Tucker, because I think ultimately that will be what he does. Okay for rational thinking people, ditto heads and non-critical thinkers will just swallow his ignorance whole and nod along.

The MSNBC Brand? Is that what they call it? And this guy says Keith Olbermann is only popular because of his personality, not his belieefs? WHAT? What planet is he living on? MSNBC's only good show is Keith Olbermann. Their other programs are all right wing biased poropaganda! Chris Mathewes can hardly be called center or moderate, he salivates over Guilaiani, McCain, and for the longest time was a real Bush fan. Tucker is as right wingnut as they come. The morning talk commentators are ok, but certainly not great as far as fair reporting goes. And Joe Scarborough is a Republican, lock step, robot. MSNBC's only redeeming factor is Keith's Countdown, which by the way, they could air several times a day, not just when it airs. They are always airing reruns of crime shows, that nobody watches. Their management should really get a clue, and wake up to the fact that most of America is now farther left then any of MSNBC's other programming. By the way, if Rosie is not their cup of tea, why not try someone smart witty and like Rachel Maddow, or Randi Rhodes to balance the right wing slant of their other programs?

Tucker is one of those creatures that make me gag when I consider that he's a member, with me, of the same species. Hearing his shrill, effeminate voice, makes it hard to keep my lunch down. If MSNBC didn't have such a romance going with any available, smooth talking, political, right wing creep, he wouldn't get within a thousand feet of any network show. MSNBC still give us Conservatives: 10, Liberals: 1, about the same as FOX. Adding or dropping another revolting right-wingt crazie, won't alter the ratio that much.
