Iraq Vets Banned From Veteran's Day Parade

Iraq veterans are banned from marching in Veterans Day Parades. Who the heck do these people think they are supposed to be honoring? If they can't honor Iraq War Veterans, then they need to quit the job of running these parades.

They had a Veterans Day Parade in Long Beach Saturday, and some veterans groups against the War in Iraq applied to join in the parade, presumably to honor their brothers who have died. Alas, politics got in the way. Evidently they no longer allow veterans to participate in Veterans Day Parades unless they are 100% behind the idea of war, no matter the circumstance. From the Press-Telegram:

Iraq veteran Jason Lemieux might not be marching in the 11th annual Long Beach Veterans Day Parade on Saturday. The Marine, who served three tours of duty in Iraq and is now against the war, was hoping to march as a member of Iraq Veterans Against the War, a national organization that calls for immediate withdrawal of troops in Iraq.

The group's application, however, was rejected last month because of its political views, parade coordinators said.

"I wanted to march like the rest of the Iraq veterans," said Lemieux, a 24-year-old Anaheim resident. "I served my country. I'm a veteran of a foreign war. I think I deserve that respect."

Iraq Veterans, along with the groups Veterans for Peace and Military Families Speak Out, applied to march together in the parade this year under the entry "Military Patriots."

After reviewing each group's mission statement, the Veterans Day Parade Committee, a non-profit group that organizes the event, voted unanimously to reject the application, said parade coordinator Martha Thuente.
http://allspinzone.com/wp/

"They do not fit the spirit of the parade," she said. "The spirit being one of gratitude for what the veterans have done. We do not want groups of a political nature, advocating the troops' withdrawal from Iraq." Parade coordinators work hard to keep the event free from politics, Thuente said.

"We're not allowed to take a political stance."

Now there's the stupid excuse of the year by Ms. Thuente. She tries to keep the parade free of politics by keeping out anyone who is in political disagreement with the President? What a load of crap. That woman should be fired for stupidity, much less for disrespecting our veterans of the failed War in Iraq.

WELCOME TO THE BIZZARO WORLD OF AMERICAN POLITICAL MANIPULATION. THIS MAKES ME WANT TO SCREAM AND ATTACK THE 'DECIDERS' OF THE MILITARY PROTOCOL AS IT RELATES TO HONORING THE VETERANS OF FOREIGN WARS. UNBELIEVABLE HOW DEEPLY THE DESTROYERS OF AMERICAN IDEALISM HAVE REACHED THE INSIDE OF OUR MOST BASIC CORE VALUES AND POLLUTED WHAT IT IS WE HOLD NEAR AND DEAR.

I've lived here for 35 years. After it is agreed that Iraq was a stupendous stupid error, there will be a mea culpa. Before that, the public official who made this local error will be honored in some fashion.

It's the way management in the US works. Give a medal to those who burned down the Waco settlement. And another medal for the sniper who killed the mother and baby at Ruby Ridge. To get a presidential medal of honor, you need to use the CIA and the FBI to cover up for the president and to attack his opponents.

Now, if you get caught ordering troops to destroy innocent civilians in My Lai, Vietnam, you will have to go through three court marshalls before you are declared innocent of all charges. Interest will have softened by then, so overturning the original convictions goes without saying.

The Golden Parachute comes in different sizes and colors. American management sucks.

I was in Reno, Nevada yesterday, Sunday, November 11 to take part in a Veterans Day Parade as a member of the "Molly IVINS, "Pots & Pans Brigade".
We waited in line and were in front of the "American Veterans Against the War" truck.
I learned that the Reno Pots & pans Brigade group hadn't applied to march in the parade.. but, were contacted by the Reno organizers and were asked to participate.
We were met with LOTS of support along the Parade route..
Sure was different from I first started demonstrating in Reno before the war!!
Thank you, Reno!!!

It is Bush's war. Bush took us into Iraq for his own personal gain and to launder money into the Repulican treasury from no-bid contract kick-backs....AND all those billions that disapeared.

Our military should always be ready to put their lives on the line for America...I would. But why should anyone risk their life to support Bush's personal fortunes..?????

I had been asking these questions before the invasion of Iraq and since then. HOW MANY BARRELS OF OIL IS A DEAD G.I. WORTH? HOW MANY BARRELS OF OIL IS A WOUNDED G.I. WORTH? HOW MANY DEAD AND WOUNDED CIVILIANS IS A BARREL OF OIL WORTH? The 3 nations who insistred that Iraq be invaded based on the supposition of Iraq having nuclear weapons and weapons of mass distruction none, as yet, have been found. They are The Netherlands (Shell Oil), Great Brition {British Petroleum) and the United States, (Exxon-Mobile, Chevron-Texaco, Conoco-Phillips and others). Iraq's oil reserves are estimated to be in the billions of barrels. At the time I was using $30 per barrel and the total value would be in the trillions of dollars. The next goal is Teran's hugh oil reserves. It's a shame that the U. S. citizens are so gullibable as to not understand what the three countries and petroleum corporations are trying to accomplish. The Iraq public understands their goals and will resist as long as their unlimited source of a new crop of suicide bombers are born every day. As us WW2 G.I.'s would say "G.I.'s are expendable, a new crop is being born every day. This administration will use the last G.I. to obtain control of the oil reserves for the oil cartel if necessary. However, they won't outlive the Iraq suiciders crops.

The Cheney/Bush administration has made it very plain that only cheerleaders for war - any war, on anyone - prosper, in business, in the media, in any wise. There is no "First Amendment" protection if it involves something they don't like. Why should civilians be any different?

I am not quite sure of the terms for a Veterans' Day Parade. I am a Canadian Vetern of WW2 and yesterday I marched in our Remembrance Day Parade, a solemn and dignified event held to honour our comrades who gave their lives for our freedom. Most of us in our eighties deplore unjust wars like Iraq and Afghanistan but we don't bring our views into the Remembrance for our fallen comrades. There is 364 other days in the year to express ourselves politically.

I strongly agree with susanc and jackahouston.
In a lifetime one acquires a few anecdotes that help define certain concepts.
If this one doesn't define "irony," I don't know what does. Perhaps someone should remind the organizers that at one time in our history this day was celebrated as "Armistice Day." It commemorated the end of the hostilities and a hope that that was "the war to end all wars."
Yes, it celebrated the hard-earned peace and those who fought and died to bring it about... So we could have no more wars and nothing but peace for posterity!
I denounce the jingoistic hijackers of this great day.

When veterans are banned from a Veteran's Day parade, the hypocrisy is so obvious...

... and the FACT of totalitarian rule is so unavoidable, those who refuse to recognize it are co-opted fools, or just plain old brainwashed idiots. I see no other choices. More and more, people who have a truth to tell are being silenced one way or another. Our "freedoms" are a joke - or handy talking points; they certainly aren't anything real. I wonder how long it will take them to declare the VFW and the American Legion to be subversive, treasonous organizations?

A sad fact of life is the American Legion and the VFW have become nothing but wings of the Republican Party.

I joined the American Legion for one year and read their right wing crap in their magazine and local publicans. When they wanted me to sign up again I wrote them about my disgust with their unquestioning lap dog following of Bush (AWOL all during Vietnam) and Cheney (draft dodger 5X's) and they wrote back saying they were "non-partisan" - what crap!

I am proud of my service but I will never join one of those outfits again!
