Rumsfeld Hit With Torture Lawsuit While In Paris

This post, written by Dr. Bruce Prescott, originally appeared on Raw Story

Raw Story is reporting that a criminal complaint of "torture" was filed in a French court against former Defense Secretary Rumsfeld. Here's a quote:

Former US Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld's jaunt to France was interrupted today by an unscheduled itinerary item -- he was slapped with a criminal complaint charging him with torture.

Rumsfeld, in Paris for a discussion sponsored by the magazine Foreign Policy, was by tracked down by representatives of a coalition of international human rights groups, who informed the architect of the US invasion of Iraq that they had submitted a torture suit against him in French court.

The filed documents allege that during his tenure, the former defense secretary "ordered and authorized" torture of detainees at both the American-run Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq and the US military's detainment facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

The head of one of the groups responsible for bringing the charges, the US-based Center for Constitutional Rights, told RAW STORY today by phone that the suit was a long time coming.

"We've been working on cornering Rumsfeld and getting him indicted somewhere going on three years now," said the Center's president, Michael Ratner. "Four days ago, we got confidential information he was going to be in France."

Joined by activists, attorneys for the human rights groups caught up with Rumsfeld on his way to a breakfast meeting. "He was walking down the street with just one person," said Ratner.

"Around 20 campaigners gave Rumsfeld a rowdy welcome...yelling 'murderer,' waving a banner and trying to push into the building," reports AFP.

Since neither President Bush nor the U.S. Congress will hold Rumsfeld accountable for violating the Geneva Conventions, perhaps the courts in France will.

France to the rescue again?

Maybe it will take support from our old friend, France, to get the US back on track. Dog knows our congress won't do it and we, the people seem to have lost our vigor over the last couple generations. Git 'er done!

Just when it was safe to order "french fries" again, the bastards throw Rummy under le TGV. Call Bob Ney and Karl Rove, let's get a resolution on this.

Whoops, Ney's doing 30 months at the Morgantown FCI. Turd Blossom? Why fore hast thow turned thine back upon us in our hour of need?

In honor of Rummy, Ney, and Turd Blossom, denounce all bottled water. "Water boarding" is now "freedom boarding."

I'm happy that someone is trying to hold these monster responsible for their misdeeds.

Whenever we let the republicans get away with something, they get emboldened and keep going. They are the same people that have caused trouble in the past! Cheney, Rummy, Negroponte, etc. etc. All of these fools should have been locked up a long time ago.

The Dems didn't impeach Reagan as they should have, and look how the Bush family is doing. We wouldn't have had this Bush problem if the Dems had gone after Reagan.

This kind of activity will not be curtailed unless we start punishing these law breakers.

Is it not time to start doing this??

Finally there are those who are raising their voices against the wholesale tyrany and murder engineered and executed by this ban of criminals... Justice will be served, even if it is at the hands of a foreign government.

More and More voices are at long last rousing the sleeping giant who has for far too long turned its head in shame... Calling all who are truely the Spirit of America to action...

Saving us -- again

The French helped the nascent USA in the Revolutionary War, and it looks like they may be helping us over this latest hurdle on our path to democracy. We took a U-turn when W's team stole the last two elections. It looked like fascism was going to win out (and probably still will) but maybe, just maybe the wheels of world justice will turn sufficiently to expose the lawless and immoral core of W's administration -- at least so that they can't just divert and deny.

A similar case in the German courts was inexplicably dismissed a while back. Obviously, there was a great deal of behind-the-scenes pressure applied, and you can be sure it will happen again. The only way I can see to use European courts to enforce the laws that the US courts are unwilling to uphold is by waiting until a new adminstration takes office in January, 2009. However, any conceivable Republican president, and the most likely Democratic contender (Hillary Clinton) would almost certainly continue the practice of granting de facto impunity to these criminals.

Since our country isn't doing anything about the human injustices brought about by this corrupt administration, perhaps France can save us from ourselves. Thank you France. This is a dream come true...One down but still more to go. Hopefully other countries will do for us what we should do for ourselves.

Viva La France!, and International Law's Second Coming

This is the beauty of the Brussels War Crimes Tribunal, World Criminal Court, and other International Laws/Bodies. Even when the US refuses to sign on, accountability for the individuals in charge will be established, then it's up to alert citizens to identify and serve these war criminals whenever they try to act like they're free again. Bush&co-conspirators will never be free again, even if American JustUs Inc. continues to play dead.

Bushco can fool some Americans most of the time,
and Bushco can fool most Americans some of the time,
but Bushco cannot fool the world ever again,
... thanks to the Liberty and Justice we once proudly exported and the nations like France who've understood and upheld it!

Viva La France!

Is he allowed to leave the country or is he in jail?

There leaves a lot to wonder about this.

Now what about Wolfowitz?

What about boy George?

How about Rice?

The whole lot is guilt for aiding and abetting.

Will we get to imprison George in the confines of his Crawford estate after he get away because congress won't nail him. And Cheney too, before he can launch WW III

Man I want these criminals in prison soo bad. They are all guilty more than the aledged hijackers and Osama. Aactually they are all part of the 911 cover up.

Impeach and the War will end and the world will rejoice.
It will be televised!

During our revolution against kingly powers, The French aided and praised us. Later they had their own revolution in imitation of ours.

I can imagine what they now think of us whenever the Prez utters the word Freedom or Liberty! They are showing us a thing or two about our lack of backbone and pride..

Have the French courts issued an international arrest warrant yet? If you or I were to flee a country to avoid arrest we would be hunted down like dogs. Send every police force in the world searching for the war criminal.
