"Cheney's Fondest Pipe Dream" Passes in The Senate

Fox News: 'McCain's TV Commercials Contain ... Out-Right Lies'

This post, written by Steve Benen, originally appeared on The Carpetbagger Report

Yesterday, the Senate was poised to vote on a non-binding resolution, sponsored by Sens. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) and Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.), to get the chamber on record supporting some aggressive language towards Iran. The measure was, as Josh Marshall described it, a building block towards an eventual military confrontation with Tehran, following the same pattern established by neocons on Iraq (as per the 1998 Iraq Liberation Act).

In the 11th hour, the Lieberman-Kyl measure was pulled, so that proponents could give the language a little touch-up. It came back today, and passed fairly easily.

The Kyl-Lieberman Iran amendment -- which ratchets up the confrontation with Iran by calling for the designation of its armed forces a terrorist organization responsible for killing U.S. troops -- just passed overwhelmingly, 76-22.

Of the Dem Presidential candidates, Hillary voted for the measure, Joe Biden and Chris Dodd opposed it, and Barack Obama missed the vote. On the GOP side, John McCain missed the vote.

To be sure, the revised version is preferable to the original. Two offending paragraphs, in particular, were omitted entirely, including the notion that "it should be the policy of the United States to combat, contain, and roll back the violent activities and destabilizing influence inside Iraq of the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran, its foreign facilitators such as Lebanese Hezbollah, and its indigenous Iraqi proxies."

Indeed, the original resolution also included language that the Senate would "support the prudent and calibrated use of all instruments of United States national power in Iraq, including diplomatic, economic, intelligence, and military instruments," as part of our drive to "combat" Iran's "destabilizing influence."

As foreign-affairs resolutions go, this was pretty strong language, and would set a dangerous precedent. As Sen. Jim Webb (D-Va.) said, "At best, it's a deliberate attempt to divert attention from a failed diplomatic policy. At worst, it could be read as a backdoor method of gaining congressional validation for military action, without one hearing and without serious debate." He added that Lieberman-Kyl "is Dick Cheney's fondest pipe dream."

So, the good news is, the most offensive language is gone. The bad news is, the resolution is still a bad idea, and it's disappointing to see it pass so easily.

Webb opposed the revised version, too, noting that it designates the Iranian guard a terrorist organization. The measure specifically says:

"The United States should designate Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps as a foreign terrorist organization...and place the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps on the list of Specially Designated Global Terrorists."

If the Senate is on board with this, and it clearly is, it's hardly a stretch to think Bush could use this as cover to confront Iranian forces militarily under the guise of counter-terrorism.

Perhaps hoping to make the bill slightly more palatable to skeptics, the revised version also included an entirely new paragraph:

"Secretary of Defense Robert Gates stated on September 16, 2007 that "I think that the administration believes at this point that continuing to try and deal with the Iranian threat, the Iranian challenge, through diplomatic and economic means is by the preferable approach. That the one we are using. We always say all options are on the table, but clearly, the diplomatic and economic approach is the one that we are pursuing."

Yeah, and they said the same thing about Iraq.

Sen. Dodd, who also opposed the measure, responded:

I cannot support the Kyl-Lieberman amendment on Iran. To do so could give this President a green light to act recklessly and endanger US national security. We learned in the run up to the Iraq war that seemingly nonbinding language passed by this Senate can have profound consequences. We need the president to use robust diplomacy to address concerns with Iran, not the language in this amendment that the president can point to if he decides to draw this country into another disastrous war of choice. [...]

We shouldn't repeat our mistakes and enable this President again.

Here's the roll call. Among the votes to note, Clinton sided with the majority, which came as a bit of a surprise, and two conservative Republicans -- Sens. Lugar (Ind.) and Hagel (Neb.) -- voted against it.

... WHEN this war gets underway it will destroy our nation. That is unquestionable. We don't have the military to fight it.. without a draft we would have no hope in hell of it and even with one we would still have a far less than ideal military force for it. The debt we would incurr in addition to the debt we already took on for Afghanistan and Iraq would eventually and likely very quickly cripple our economy and our nation.

Trust me when I say I do not take saying this lightly... but anyone who actually supports a war with Iran is at best bordering on treason. They are advocating a course of action that is incredibly likely to destroy our nation.

Hillary shows once again that she swears allegiance to Israel.
And once again--any country that has oil reserves must be demonized so we can attack them. How many people in this country are so disgusted they would like to leave it now?
No country will take me because I am over 65. Guess I'll just have to stay and fight.

What a surprise! The war-mongering yanks are looking for another country to bomb. Sounds like a great plan: kill 600,000 innocent Iraqis, screw up a country, then to deflect attention from a lost war just start another one somewhere else. The rest of the world knows that Yanks have the attention spans of goldfish. When the next war starts the Yanks will have forgotten all about the lost war in Iraq (that is if they even know they're two different countries.)

I am so totally disgusted!!!

We learned well from what happened with Iraq, didn't we? God, I cannot believe that ANYONE would be so stupid as to vote to give this lying president any authority to do anything! He ought to have to ask permission to go to the BATHROOM!!!

What is it that everybody in Washington is drinking that allows them to believe that Bush can be trusted with anything? I am sickened!

ISRAEL, ISRAEL UBER ALLES!

Is anyone surprised anymore that you never hear a dissenting voice from any poltician when it comes to our relationship with Israel? Just an indication of how sewed up
AIPAC has our political system. Is there anyone who doubts
that Leiberman's primary concern is to protect and defend Israel at any cost to our own men, women and economy? Then I would call them exceedingly naive. The idea of attacking Iran is even more insane than the pretext we used to destroy Iraq, and kill many thousands of its civilians, a
quagmire that will fester long after this administration disappears. Hillary disgusts me, a classic example of the politician who dances to the highest paying fiddler. Israel, above all, should take great care to prevent such an attack,
since it's well known that retaliation will target it first. But in the final analysis, I believe it will be the undoing of this nation
we were once so proud of.

"Trust me when I say I do not take saying this lightly... but anyone who actually supports a war with Iran is at best bordering on treason. They are advocating a course of action that is incredibly likely to destroy our nation."
And when will We, the People of this once-great United States, put a stop to this madness, a dictatorship the likes that have not been seen on a global scale since Hitler.
If the Dems have betrayed us, and can't do it, then People Power, non-violent, but overwhelming and total, by millions turning out in rallies and boycotting all things government and military (including not letting their young people sacrifice themselves in a fantasy-war based on lies again, just so the carpetbaggers in Washington can enrich themselves), until the sovereign Will of the People prevails. India did it, the Philippines did it. Surely the American people can do it! It's high time to stop this madness!

A personal comment about Joe Blow Leiberman:
"Leiberman" Just think what we would have if you were vice President?
What a disgrace this guy is. I can't call him a man but I can call him a turncoat. He is just the type of guy you want to fight a war with. He is a 100% coward and enemy of the military.
Why? Who knows what side he will be on next time.
In plain English he is a kiss ass.
I remember when he was running for V.P. and every time he would get on the air he would say "Praise The Lord"
What a guy. Really loves Jesus. Well Jesus saw right thru this mouse. I have not heard him Praise The Lord since then.
So to you Joe! You are a two-bit creep and a sell out to the best bidder. My only wish is that I could be in front of you to let you know that you would get as low as to kiss the belly of a snake.
From a REAL American and Vet that served my country for 20 years in combat, and damn proud to be an American, and also to see thru slime as you.
