The Sept. 21 editorial of The Rocky Mountain Collegian was a taunt: TASER THIS...FUCK BUSH. Students groups like the College Republicans and faculty have in fact, obliged -- insofar as they are legally able -- to take down the students responsible.

Or at least the editor in chief, J. David McSwane.

Newspaper editors may be the face of the publication, but the publication is not its editor. The editorial board's decision to run the statement was a 4-3 split, so it's clear that the editor is not the only one who should technically be held accountable. But this isn't really about "journalistic integrity" as the CSU College Republicans would spin it. It is about creating taboo lines around free expression, especially ones that deviate from tamer, 'legitimate' forms of discourse.

The statement itself was a four-word punchline that exercised the right to express a sentiment that many U.S. youth may be feeling. Fuck Bush and Buck Fush stickers and statements are common. Coupled with bizarre tasering incidents at University of Florida, and before that, the brutal tasering of Mostafa Tabatabainejad, a UCLA student in a library, excessive, punitive force seems to be the guard waiting to pounce the moment someone says something out of line.

Whether one agrees with the form or content of the editorial misses the point. Did the UF student Andrew Meyer ramble on too long? Was he an aggressive questioner? All of that is debatable, but trying to silence him with force, bordered on the incredulous. The editorial, was, an exercise of the right to express an opinion, in a completely brazen way, without being silenced.

Wednesday night, a 10-person, faculty-student committee will determine McSwane's fate. If they actually bow down to a puritanical sense of propriety, well, then, fuck 'em.

Digg!

University officials and students have every reason to call for the editorial board's dismissal here.

This transgression isn't about free speech. It's about the role journalism plays in a given community.

The media is ostensibly composed of people who are capable of communicating ideas through professional and impartial language. This is the core of journalistic credibility. A negative reputation on that count can make or break a reporter, or a newspaper.

We've all seen the impact of bias on the Fox News network. When the problem filters down to the universities, it must be checked immediately, to set an example and more importantly, to uphold a minimum standard.

Their freedom of speech is in no way being challenged. The privilege of their stewardship of the press belonging to the student body is what they are having to defend.

The right to free speech is not to be confused with the right to an audience.

...being unnecessarily profane in an editorial in which they are supposed to showcase intellect? This is exactly how I felt when Kanye West said, "Bush does not care about black people." Using a little intellect wouldn't hurt every once and a while... if you have college degree use it. Knowledge is power.

Wasn't this a response to the Vice Pres. using the same phrase as to the taser being used on a student at Florida ? If so, should they also censor the V.P.

what does bush have to do with the tasering incident in florida?

seriously, how can you say, taser this, and fuck bush? if you are going to test free speech, at least make it a relevant point. make it something that bites, and sinks its teeth in. it seems like just a snide remark, that has no place in any kind of political discourse.

But if Bush's approval ratings are really so far in the toilet, why is anyone getting upset?

I also love the way that the reporters are avoiding saying the word 'fuck'.

Why is it necessary to use profance and degrading speech to make a point? The words the editor used are a form of a curse. I believe the editor to be morally challenged. I would expect something better from a university student paper.

Could it be a response to something Stephen Colbert took notice of, i.e., as the student was being tasered, the other students sat passively by. no one rose to defend him?
I thought it obvious that the purpose of the headline was to prick that bubble of apathy amongst the students who read the paper. Those four words drew a line in the sand.
Americans will have to decide on where they see the limits of free speech as being.
If they agree that the headline is within the limits of free speech, then it begs the question. Will they stand up to defend free speech?
Do Americans believe in "free speech", or only in "free speech" that is inoffensive to them.

For their headline they should have just printed, "BUCK FUSH" then nobody could have said a thing. If they said, "Well, such and such is implied!" So what? no "obscenities" were used, so yuck fou!

Established powers of all stripes, their sycophants, and the sheep who follow them all get much more upset about a curse word than they do about a child dying of cholera in Baghdad, or a U. S. soldier being maimed so that a small class of capitalists can enhance their portfolios.

It's Bush who should be fired. And most of Congress along with him.

If you'll permit an observation from a "gentleman" (this by act of Congress), Fuck Bush doesn't go far enough! The suggestion should be extended to the entire Bush clan. We've had enough of this retarded dynasty which exhibits all the marks of excessive intermarriage.
Being prime examples of elite mediocrities is bad enough but the Bush clan's history of war profiteering, going back to their collusion with the Nazi regime of WW2 should qualify them all for this unique form of insult. It's so American!
Personally, I'd like to smack him longside the head with a month-old flounder!

In the words of the emminent Dr. Dre, "F** y'all. All y'all. . .If you don't like me, blow me."

Why this is important is because its simply another attempt at censorship using decency as a crutch to silence the motherfu**rs you don't get along with. It's a round about way of undermining what gets printed by using thuggery. They'll tell you its a matter of decency, a matter of journalistic integrity. I call bulls**t on them. It's all because they want to silence the opposition rather than engage with them. If you're able create an attitude of fear (fear of losing your job, you're title, your reputation), the people will be afraid to speak up.

To this the critics will respond, well the language was vulgar and lacking in critical discouse. If you feel that's the case, good for f***ing you. Start your own newspaper and respond to it in a critical manner and tell me all about how the guy who printed the article was a dumbf*** for printing Fuck Bush. If you do that and people read your sh**, there's nothing that F** Bush guy can do about it and vioala you win the argument on your own terms.

But you know what, if someone wants to print that George W. Bush is the dumbest, most stupidly evil motherf***er on the planet who deserves to be tasered in a Gitmo jail cell while being forced into a naked pyramid with Dick Cheney and the rest of his cabinet, and his or her editorial board wants to print it, fine. You know why?

Because this is the Goddamn United Fucking States of Ameirica and I wouldn't have it anyother way.

its simply another attempt at censorship using decency as a crutch to silence the motherfu**rs you don't get along with. It's a round about way of undermining what gets printed by using thuggery.

Profanity is the language of thuggery.

It expresses emotion devoid of ideas. That's why it's customarily consigned to the 'creative' scene.

Even in the 'Goddamn United Fucking States of Ameirica,' editors are accountable for decisions that impact the paper's credibility.

Language aside, the headline in question had nothing to do with the tasering incident, and appears to be a self-indulgent swipe that blusters much, but imparts little insight.

A newspaper, or writer, who needs profanity-laced screaming headlines to communicate is probably in the wrong business. Profanity immediately imparts a 'lowbrow' connotation to readers.

Criticism on this issue has little to do with 'free speech,' and much to do with poor judgement, and self-indulgent, adolescent-esque posturing.

This is why non-TV media outlets are increasingly looking to hire subject matter experts as reporters, instead of journalism graduates.

Editorial board decision of 4 to 3 would seem to confirm that enough people hold the opinion to merit inclusion in the media at any level. Most of us oldsters find the specific term distasteful, but in this instance, totally justified and precisely tailored to fit not only the would-be "King" , but also each of his court jesters.

We could come up with many other colourful words for what we want to say. . .more letters involved, and all. . ., but, really, it's the only verb for the act. The word rolls along effortlessly from the lips to the back of the throat. It is a word. So what. We are all adults here, aren't we? It's not like we're in gwaid skool!

"It is the KKK in suites and ties running all over the White House and Capital Hill”. Unfortunately they are also running around all over every big and small town in America these days bringing out the deep seeded hatred and racist feeling of the white folks. It reminds one so much of the National Socialists party of Hitler's Germany as so many of our progressive thinkers have accurately pointed out in their revealing books and journals since nine eleven.

It pains me deeply to see American flags painted on hill sides, hanging over bridges and out of car windows expressing nothing more than outright stupidity of a multitude of mad American Whiteman and women. It looks to me like a bunch of Mafiosi’s and wild wild west bandits holding our government hostage. A gang pirates using American anger and sheer ignorance to launch the take over of the world at least its useful resources by force and brutal violence. It is an undertaking bound to fail miserably.
