Jena's Mayor Thanks White Supremacists for Their "Moral Support"

This post, written by Laura Flanders, originally appeared on The Nation

"Jena is America," says Alan Bean, speaking of the Louisiana town where six black students are looking at decades in jail for a schoolyard brawl while white kids are facing nothing for hanging up nooses. Jena is America in the sense that the unequal justice there is not unique. There are "Jena Sixes" behind bars in every state. But it isn't America in the sense that the country as a whole has had no trouble at all ignoring Jena.

Bean is a Baptist minister from Texas who formed Friends of Justice in response to the now infamous Tulia drug sting of 1999 in which over half of Tulia's black males were convicted on the uncorroborated word of a corrupt and racist undercover cop. He was instrumental in getting that story out. In January he got busy in Jena. By that time, a young white man had already been beaten up and six young black students had been indicted, originally on attempted murder charges. One of the six, Mychal Bell, was legally still a juvenile when he was convicted of attempted second-degree murder with a deadly shoe. While the six were paroled, Bell's been incarcerated ever since.

"If the media wasn't watching what was going on then every last one of those kids would be in jail," one of the Jena mothers, Tina Jones, told the Nation's Gary Younge. Jones is generous. The truth is, "the media" haven't been watching. Black radio has been listening, and the black blogosphere's been buzzing, but the white "mainstream" and the white liberal media woke up to this story about a minute ago.

By every account I've heard, the people who had sufficient fire in their belly to wake up before dawn and bus their way into Jena September 20 were African American -- around 90 percent. Probably close to that same percentage had a story to tell about a family member or neighbor who's been touched by the criminal injustice system. "White liberals care, but they just don't feel it in anything like the same way," says Bean. "There's a massive experience gap."

James Rucker of the action-alert network, Color of Change, sent out an email alert July 17 after hearing about the story from Bean and his online subscribers. On the media front, he thinks there's good news and bad: "We've seen the power of black radio and the black netroots who really came into their own on this story, but it hasn't captured the imagination of the left media in the way that I would have hoped." (Subscribe to ColorofChange.org.)

We are, after all, talking about Louisiana. On August, 31, when the two hangman's nooses were found hanging in the tree, journalists were all over the Gulf Coast marking the one-year anniversary of Katrina. In the following weeks, when residents started holding lonely rallies, regional papers in Alexandria, Shreveport and Baton Rouge carried word, as did Jena's own Jena Times.

Is it too much to expect that following the burst of attention to institutional racism that accompanied the broken levee disaster and Katrina, white America's sensors might have been unusually attuned to the sort of injustice revealed at Jena? Or even, to expect that journalists might have been on the look out?

The thing is, media, and the movement pressure it could have built, could have made a difference. If Jena High School and the Jena DA had felt pushed to take on the noose-hangers a year ago, one white student, Justin Barker, might never have been beaten by anyone and six young black men (and one boy) might be heading to college today, not to courtrooms. The whole Jena story could have been different if one District Attorney, not to mention the US Justice Department had felt the push to do what would have been right -- and kick Jim Crow out of the 21st Century.

It's late but it's not too late, for all of America to act. In fact, truly massive public attention is needed right now as a white backlash builds in Louisiana. While Air America and National Public Radio move on, David Duke and his radio listeners are all over the Jena story. Last week, the former Ku Klux Klan leader announced his support for Jena's white residents (who voted overwhelmingly for him when he ran for Louisiana governor in 1991.) Since the civil rights demonstrators left, Jena familes are alone against the white supremacists who have started appearing. Over the weekend, a neo-Nazi Web site posted the names, addresses and phone numbers of some of the six black teenagers and their families and urged followers to find them and "drag them out of the house." A white driver was arrested in a nearby town, driving a pick up with nooses tied to the back fender. White extremist web sites and blogs are exploding and it's not just Klansmen and neo-Nazis posting hateful things.

It's late but it's not too late to answer: Is Jena America?

UPDATE: The Chicago Tribune reports that Jena's Mayor Murphy McMillin "praised efforts by pro-white groups to organize counter-demonstrations."

McMillin has insisted that his town is being unfairly portrayed as racist--an assertion the mayor repeated in an interview with Richard Barrett, the leader of the Nationalist Movement, a white supremacist group based in Learned, Miss., who asked McMillin to "set aside some place for those opposing the colored folks."

"I am not endorsing any demonstrations, but I do appreciate what you are trying to do," Barrett quoted McMillin as saying. "Your moral support means a lot."

So the mayor of Jena is trying to have it both ways, thanking white supremacists for their 'moral support' while trying to obfuscate and say that he didn't 'know' what position the organization supporting him actually believes? We are supposed to buy this? At any rate, this should come as no surprise to anyone.

Cheers

The Absolute LACK of response from Alternet Readers Speaks Volumes!

As a black male, I visit this site DAILY. I read almost all postings. I also take extreme note of those which have numerous responses. I have noticed that in ALL cases regarding racism, the reponses are extremely low. This really does imply that Alternet readers of European descent, Asian and other descents, other than black people, care LITTLE or none at all in regards to this issue! After all, those ignorant "Ns" are just being themselves. They just want something for FREE. They are just "lazy." They are just trying to throw "blame" on everyone!

How fascinating. Then White Americans and other ethnicities, MIRACULOUSLY wonder WHY Black Americans are angry!

Hahahahhaha.

Terrific

Some inconvenient facts

Current rating: 2    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Apparently the facts have been getting mangled by the media.

Here is a different version.

* The so-called "white tree" at Jena High, often reported to be the domain of only white students, was nothing of the sort, according to teachers and school administrators; students of all races, they say, congregated under it at one time or another.

* Two nooses — not three[believed to be a code of the KKK] — were found dangling from the tree. Beyond being offensive to blacks, the nooses were cut down because black and white students "were playing with them, pulling on them, jump-swinging from them, and putting their heads through them," according to a black teacher who witnessed the scene.

* There was no connection between the September noose incident and December attack, according to Donald Washington, an attorney for the U.S. Justice Department in western Louisiana, who investigated claims that these events might be race-related hate crimes.

* The three youths accused of hanging the nooses were not suspended for just three days — they were isolated at an alternative school for about a month, and then given an in-school suspension for two weeks.

* The six-member jury that convicted Bell was, indeed, all white. However, only one in 10 people in LaSalle Parish is African American, and though black residents were selected randomly by computer and summoned for jury selection, none showed up.

Also: (The student) was hit in the back of the head, and fell unconscious either then or after hitting the ground. The six continued kicking him after he was unconscious; Barker's father says, in the head, which could have been fatal.

So it was hardly just a "playground brawl".

Shows the True Feelings of White Americans Regarding The South

This last post of "Logic's Edge," does nothing but show the true feelings of White America regarding cases of pure racism against blacks in the South. Hey, if all else fails LIE! This guy is only just one of the TYPICAL white men I was constantly running into while growing up in Memphis, Tennessee. That is why I left the Antebellum South all those years ago and it STILL makes me SICK to think of having to move back there! In other words, I will NEVER seek to live in that geographical rotting piece of GARBAGE again!

Terrific

This is an unfortunate incident that little is being done to support the judge's decision about this. Not only was one child brutally assualted by a group of racists for taunting, but it appears no parties involved are learning anything from this situation. I just can't understand why people think one should serve little punishment for an assualt because they feel the assualt was justified? Who cares what the white kids did... who cares what the black kids did... you can't go around pulverizing someone else's face just because they don't like you. Instead, true steps of cultural awareness need to be taken to demonstrate we are all equal.

The Last Point to Note

Current rating: 3    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Sadly with all of the attention brought to my mention that it appears White Americans care little about this case, notice how few people responded to the inital articles regarding the Jenna Six and this last article. In every case you see people attempting to JUSTIFY the charges brought against them, or try DESPERATELY to alleviate the brutality of racism that exists in the South by declaring that we do not know the "whole" story. Having lived in the South for 31 years of my life, I no longer need to the "whole" story since I have seen it played out there OVER and OVER and OVER again!

While it is true that some people who are not "African American" have spoken out regarding this issue here on Alternet, overwhelmingly these topics were IGNORED! I sat and watched the response over a period of 3 days for EACH article posted! Oh well. As I stated in my original posting, people wonder why black men are so angry!

Terrific

The writer of this column does not know what is truely going on in Louisiana just because she visited here and wrote about it. I was raised in government housing in Louisiana. As a resident here, I do notice the racism. It is not just the white people, it is both the white and the black race. I have lived here for over 26 years now, I try to understand both sides and try to explain to them that hate is not the answer. But over time, I have begin to realize you can not change old habits and most of the time it's like talking to a brick wall. Most of these people were raised to hate each other, by either family or friends.
Bottom line: The boys who hung the nose should have been suspended. If they continued these acts, they should have been expelled. As for the 6 boys who beat the white kid, they should have to suffer the consequences. Just because someone said or did something that you do not agree with does not give ANYONE the right to beat you. No matter what color or race you are! I am appalled everyone is making this a race issue. This is 2007, when is racism and hate going to stop? It's time to start holding people accountable for their actions without pulling the race card!

Perhaps you are unaware of the truth regarding this issue? As for pulling the "race" card, there is so such thing as "race!" It is a socio-political construct. It was created in the late 1800s by white men attempting to justify the alienation and subjugation of darker skinned people. These "men" works can be found by doing simple searches in Google or going to your local college library. As to the "truth" regarding the Jenna Six, visit this website and watch the videos.

Democracy Now: The 2nd Broadcast

They all cover various aspects of the case. So if you are truly interested the "whole truth," then watch them all. If "justice" interests you and not JUST US, then watch the entire segments of all of them.

BLACKS, HISPANICS IMPRISONED IN LARGER NUMBERS THAN WHITES, REPORT SAYS

Blacks in Connecticut are jailed at more than 12 times the rate of whites, and Hispanics nearly seven times the white rate, according to a study released Wednesday by a criminal justice policy group.

The study shows that Connecticut has one of the greatest disparities in the nation in incarceration rates. Blacks are incarcerated 5.6 times the rate as whites nationally.

Hispanic men in Connecticut are incarcerated at 6.6 times the rate of whites, the largest disparity in the nation. Nationally, the rate is 1.8.

The study by the Washington, D.C., nonprofit advocacy group The Sentencing Project also shows that Connecticut incarcerates whites at a lower rate than the national average, according to the report.

"The national figures are disturbing, with African Americans incarcerated at six times the rate of whites and Connecticut has twice that rate," said Marc Mauer, executive director of The Sentencing Project.

Put another way, the national ratios suggest that out of every 100,000 whites, 412 are incarcerated; out of every 100,000 blacks, 2,290 are incarcerated; and out of every 100,000 Hispanics, 742 are incarcerated.

In Connecticut, out of every 100,000 whites, 211 are incarcerated; out of every 100,000 blacks, 2,532 are jailed; out of every 100,000 Hispanics, 1,401 are in prison.

"If you are black and born in Connecticut, you are more likely to be incarcerated," Mauer said.

Logic's Edge asks Should they just go free.
Posted by: dauphin534 on Sep 26, 2007 9:06 AM
Current rating: 2    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
My answer is YES! YES! YES!

Even if everything that you say about the Jena Six in your defense of the charges is true, Bell has been in jail since December!!!!!

Yes, the white kid was knocked unconscious. Yes, he could have been seriously hurt. Yes he had nothing to do with the nooses on campus. Maybe he's the nicest kid in the world who's never used the N word and doesn't have a racist bone in his body. We know he didn't deserve to get beaten. But he's alive and perfectly healthy. He was healthy enough that night to got out with his friends.

Bell has been in jail for going on 10 MONTHS!!!!!! I know he's a big, scary black male and all. But let's not foget, he's just a kid. In the midst of some pretty big frustrations in which it was clear that the system didn't care, he and the Jena 6 struck out at the wrong person and did the wrong thing. But should he go to jail for 20 years? Hell NO!!!!! And nothing that any one has said on this forum has indicated otherwise.

You guys act like demanding that the Jena 6 go free is us asking that they aren't punished. These kids have already been punished above and beyond what anyone else has for a schoolyard fight. And it was a schoolyard fight. I saw a lot of them when I was growing up. Sometimes they were fair. Sometimes kids got jumped from behind and got the shit kicked out of them. They were all wrong and unjustified, but throwing a kid who made a stupid, violent decision in jail for 20 years is also wrong and unjustified.

If the defendants were poor lower class white boys, they would get the same charges! Everyone needs to focus on the people in power..not the race. If they were rich black males, do you think this would be going on? I doubt it!

Are you kidding? "Amerikkka", that's disgusting. As a black person, we have more financial help with grants and federal aid than any other race for school! Testing was lowered JUST for the black community to help us with law exams! The only racist person I see on here is you! The only war I see going on is between you and the good ol boys. Eventually I'm sure you all will kill each other in the end anyways..so have fun hating each other!

Unless, of course, those in charge of enforcing the law engage in selective prosecution, which is clearly going on here. It's the same issue we saw play out in the NBA recently where a corrupt official was discovered. If you enforce the rules on some, but not on others, definite advantages are created.

Should the group of kids who apparently beat up another kid be punished? Sure. Should the kids who incited the whole thing by hanging nooses from the tree be punished? Sure. But as has been noted, this was a schoolyard brawl and ought to be handled as such. When the antagonism of the white kids goes unpunished while the black kids face attempted murder charges for kickin' someone's ass, faith in the justice system is corrupted and undermined. The message to the white folks is, "You won't be punished for your infractions" while the black community hears, "You will receive the maximum punishment for the smallest infraction". Anyone who fails to see that there is institutional racism at play here is part of the problem.

Back to basketball for a moment, I can't stand the game the way it's played today. Not only are there instances of selective enforcement, but the rules themselves encourage violations. The "strategic foul" that is so frequently employed at the end of a game is disgusting. The situation should not exist where it can be to your strategic advantage to break a rule. Seeing this transpire game after game is corrupting our youth and will lead to the downfall of western civilization. Nah, never mind... it's already in the toilet.

Jena 6 - A Result of the Bush Administration

Well now people, this is an area of Louisiana that went 90+ percent for the Bush administration. Now you may say, but wait, he has an African-American secretary of state, who he treats like a "colored maid". Now Condi, get me some coffee and I will tell you what to say. You tell those people I will bring down the confederate army on them, did I say confederate, I meant US army if they don't comply with my mandate. Truth is the "Great Uniter" (uniter is not a real word – just one the idiot made up) has trampled on Civil Rights of not only minorities, but on anyone who is impoverished. This president does not like the poor; he feels they are beneath him regardless of race, ethnicity, or religion. He cares only for the rich and influential that has the same insane ideology. His plans for his post presidency are indicative of a money grubbing loser that he and his family are notorious for though out their family history. So many idiots voted for this clown; sadly so many more did not even vote. If we want real change in this society toward true civil rights, we need to vote out the current regime of fascist and vote in the Democrats. We need to let the religious wrong know that they are not going to control this country. We need to let the gun toting nuts at the NRA know they no longer have a seat in the oval office. We need to let the military know that we support them, but not this illegal war that the fascist have lied to them about. We do not need to fear the phantom terrorist that “Rudy”, “Mitt”, “Johnny” and that lousy actor (Fred) are trying scare us with in to believing they are our saviors. I say, and I say it out loud; Fuck The Republicans, the Party of the Wide Stance, and all of their followers.

How in the hell is this Bush's fault? I guess he made the hurricanes too right? When Katrina hit where was the Louisiana governor (Blanco), whom I may add is Democrat! She sent hundreds of buses to the black community for votes, but where were these buses when Katrina hit? And when the Bush administration gave us BILLIONS of dollars to rebuild our levees, what did Blanco do with our money? Do you ever wonder how she was able to build her own private airplane landing in Pecan Island, Louisiana?Louisiana is a DEMOCRAT state my friend! Maybe get your facts straight before you open your mouth. I don't think it matters what party is in office, they all want our vote & our money! Do you really think the Democrat government gives a hoot about you? Ha!
