David Vitter Earmarks $100,000 of Taxpayer Money for Anti-Evolution Group

From The Times Picayune (via Crooks and Liars):

Sen. David Vitter, R-La., earmarked $100,000 in a spending bill for a Louisiana Christian group that has challenged the teaching of Darwinian evolution in the public school system and to which he has political ties.

The money is included in the labor, health and education financing bill for fiscal 2008 and specifies payment to the Louisiana Family Forum "to develop a plan to promote better science education."

Uh huh...just like J. Michael Bailey wanted to "help" transsexuals via The Man Who Would be Queen.

I think that, given that the Dems have no backbone whatsoever when it comes to standing up to the Iraq War lies, it is our duty to force them to make a stand on this illegal contribution to anti-constitutionist nutcases piece of pork. They ran on ethics in '06; they implicitly stand for science over ChristoBush mythology - so they damn well better be willing to not simply cut this tumor from the bill but also make a spectacle of it - and this clown's psycho-hypocritical 'morals' - in the process.

The Dems are still in control, right? How is someone like this even allowed to tack something like this onto a bill?

If the Dems aren't willing to stand up to something like this, then we're all kidding ourselves if we thik they'll ever do anything of any substance.

Note from Pam Spaulding: Raw Story reports that the Louisiana Family Forum is the brainchild of Tony Perkins, a former Louisiana state lawmaker and head of the Family Research Council. Perkins, btw, is tied to former KKK Wizard David Duke. He paid Duke $82K for his mailing list.

How can we allow spending government money on a lie?

Oh, that's right - - we're spending billions in Iraq.

Maybe it's time for some good old American anarchy.

Why is this guy still in congress? He has participated in illegal activities (i.e., solicitation of prostitutes) in the D.C. area and in the state of Louisiana. He should not be allowed to submit anything. The "Party of the Wide Stance" is also the "Party of the Hookers" (no offense intended towards hookers) needs to sanction this "bozo". Now in regards to evolution; I think the republicans are proof enough of the existence of Neanderthals. The entire party fits into that category of species. To bad they never evolved.

Evolution is a theory

Though many scientists (and I am a scientist) claim that the theory of evolution is proven, it is just a theory. At one time people theorized that the world was flat but it didn't make it any truer than theorizing that maybe you (but not I) am a descendant of some apes or monkeys.
The theory of evolution has so many holes that it just doesn't hold water.
Despite that, I agree that Vitter is misusing my/our tax money for political purposes and he ought to stay out of things involving character since his is quite questionable.

illegal contribution to anti-constitutionist nutcases

"illegal contribution to anti-constitutionist nutcases"
should not have been crossed out.

I have read many books on the psychiatric causes of religion and I
have posted a list of them on Alternet. But it still amazes me that
people resist so intensely the fact that "human" is a race of
chimpanzee, that we share half of our genes with bananas, that all
visible life evolved from bacteria, etc.

Is there a psychiatrist out there who can cure people of
creationism?

Here is the list again:

The Neuropsychological bases of god beliefs
Dr. Michael A. Persinger MD, psychiatrist 1987
"Religious people are just like my temporal lobe patients"

"The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bi-
Cameral Mind"
Julian Jaynes Professor, Harvard University 1976
"Religious people are just like schizophrenic patients"

Origins of the Modern Mind by Merlin Donald 1991
"So what did you expect from a brain that is based on the
Chimpanzee brain? Furthermore, the 4 Million years it took to
go from chimp brain to "human" brain is much too short for
Nature to get the bugs worked out.

"The Psychiatric Interview in Clinical Practice"
Roger A. MacKinnon, M.D., Robert Michels, M.D.
W. B. Saunders Co. 1971
"Religiosity is a common symptom [of] schizophrenic patients"
"If the symptom is religiosity, the diagnosis is "Schizophrenia".

"Manufacturing Belief" by Lewis Wolpert
http://www.salon.com/books/feature/2007/05/15/lewis_wolpert/
The origin of religion is in our heads, explains Wolpert.

"Breaking the Spell: Religion as a Natural Phenomenon", by
Daniel Dennett Let's do scientific research on religion and find
out what causes it.

"The God delusion" by Richard Dawkins. "Religion is caused by
a kind of computer virus that infects the living computer, the
human brain."

"The God Part of the Brain" by Matthew Alper 1996. "The USA
is anomolusly religious because many early founder groups were
religiously insane and fleeing prosecution in Europe. Religion is
a genetic disorder."

"The Science of Good and Evil" by Michael Shermer, 2004
"Morality and Ethics are now in the jurisdiction of Science and
greatly improved thereby."

"God: The Failed Hypothesis" byVictor Stenger Scientific proof
that god does not exist.

Alternet and KatRose should have given us the bill number.
Otherwise, how can we call Congress to complain?

I just got an email from Bill Walsh saying that
the number of the bill is S.1710.

You will need this number to talk to senators.
