O'Reilly's Visit to a Black-Owned Restaurant Unleashes His Innermost Racist Thoughts

TRex: Falafel Bill doesn't believe Black people are articulate, successful or "think for themselves."

Sometimes it seems to me that Bill O'Reilly only opens his mouth to change feet. In a truly cringe-inducing conversation with professional African American Cultural Apologist Juan ("Wan") Williams, Pox News's assistant principal recently told of his life-changing visit to Sylvia's, the famous soul-food mecca of Harlem.

Bill-O was apparently flabbergasted that actual black businesspeople are perfectly capable of running a five-star dining establishment all on their own without any help whatsoever from The Man.

Media Matters:

During the September 19 edition of his nationally syndicated radio program, discussing his recent trip to have dinner with Rev. Al Sharpton at Sylvia's, a famous restaurant in Harlem, Bill O'Reilly reported that he "had a great time, and all the people up there are tremendously respectful,"

And clean! And articulate!

(A)dding: "I couldn't get over the fact that there was no difference between Sylvia's restaurant and any other restaurant in New York City. I mean, it was exactly the same, even though it's run by blacks, primarily black patronship."

Why is that such a shock, Bill? And where the hell have you been eating all your life that you've never been to a black owned and operated restaurant before? Hello? Is it 1955 in there?

O'Reilly asserted: "There wasn't one person in Sylvia's who was screaming, 'M-Fer, I want more iced tea.'

Um...do what, now? Was that honestly what he expected the place to be like?

O'Reilly: You know, I mean, everybody was -- it was like going into an Italian restaurant in an all-white suburb in the sense of people were sitting there, and they were ordering and having fun. And there wasn't any kind of craziness at all."

The amount of condescension dripping off that statement could stun an ox. What was he thinking he would find there? A wait staff swinging from the chandeliers with bones through their noses?

Actually, now that I'm thinking about it, that probably isn't too far off from what he was expecting. And a big black pot in the center of the room that they were going to chuck him in and dance around waving their spears in the air.

You know, demagogues like O'Reilly and his frequent guest and co-host on The O'Reilly Factor, Michelle Malkin like to make a lot of histrionic screeching sounds about how Teh Left are the real racists in this country, but the fact that he thought he'd stumbled on some kind of magical Lost World when confronted by a group of pleasantly dressed, upscale black Americans out having a good time speaks volumes about his real attitude toward people with skin darker than his own. It is apparently a shock to him, even, that black people are capable of independent thought:

O'Reilly also stated: "I think black Americans are starting to think more and more for themselves."

What, rather than have uptight white assholes like yourself do it for them?

They're getting away from the Sharptons and the [Rev. Jesse] Jacksons and the people trying to lead them into a race-based culture. They're just trying to figure it out. 'Look, I can make it. If I work hard and get educated, I can make it."

Right, because in Conservatard Woof-Woof Land, no-one should ever listen to Al Sharpton. He's a "rabble-rouser", which means that he works tirelessly to give voice to the needs and concerns of black people who can't afford to dine at Sylvia's on the weekends. And we can't have that, now can we? If black Americans are going to matter, then by god, they better be bourgie.

I think The Late Great Steve Gilliard said it best:

I know a lot of white people have this fantasy that Al Sharpton stirs up trouble and makes things worse when there is a racial confrontation.

But that is a fantasy.

[snip]

What people need to understand is that Sharpton has both a broad base of support and a great deal of respect. If people think his views are unrepresentative, they are delusional. While I make no excuse for his antics with the Dems or his hotel bills, there is a simple reason that he can still command respect among black New Yorkers.

It's because when things get tight, he doesn't run.

He stood by the Central Park Jogger defendents long after the case was no longer news. And he was vindicated as DNA cleared them. This took ten years.

Give yourself a treat: go back and read that whole Gilliard link. Gawd, I miss him!

Sharpton has credibility and has a following among a lot of people, and they trust him, because he won't be cowed by pasty racist pricks like Giuliani or O'Reilly, and such people can think for themselves very well, Bill, you cracker Westbury trash.

To listen to O'Reilly, you'd think no one ever even bothered to sit him down for the basics of Black History Month, the only time some whites can patronizingly be bothered even to acknowledge the existence of African American history.

Let me offer you a quick remedial refresher, Bill: have you never heard of the Harlem Renaissance? James Baldwin? Duke Ellington? Sydney Poitier? Here's a tip: Black Americans have been at the center of pretty much every significant cultural movement in this country since the beginning of the 20th century. Ever heard of a writer named W.E.B. DuBois, Bill? Frederick Douglass? George Washington Carver? How about Nobel Prize winner Toni Morrison? Jessye Norman? Amiri Baraka?

Do you suppose that Bill even knows that there are black universities? Black Shakespeare companies? Or that the first black opera company in this country was founded in the 1870's?

He probably doesn't, and would doubt their existence if anyone tried to fill him in. Because to men like Bill O'Reilly, capital-C "Culture" is strictly the province of wealthy whites like himself. He doesn't understand that to express shock and amazement when a person of color does something as well as or better than a white person is the very definition of racism.

But that's how Bill thinks, and really, how all the lily-white chucklefucks (of all races) at Pox News think. The Republican mind has never advanced beyond the 19th century colonial paradigm. It's all self-righteousness and the Agony of the White Man's Burden.

I only hope that someone in the kitchen blew their nose into his mashed potatoes. It would serve him right.

Digg!

It's really shocking how sheltered a life this man must have had. Clearly all his information about how African Americans live comes from the mass media. His willingness to basically *admit* that he knows nothing is stunning.

Time to study abroad, America: eat in a different neighborhood. Marvel at the exotic culture you find!

O'Reilly has a huge number of people listening to his radio show every single day. When I hear thoughts like these coming out of his mouth, I think about the fact that there are millions, MILLIONS, of people who agree with him entirely, not to mention the tens of millions who think the same but don't listen to his show. It all makes me lose a little more faith in the decency of humanity, to be honest. But more than anything it makes me angry that such social-backwardness is given platform to so many listeners, instead of someone capable of starting constructive dialogue.

It is astounding that O'Lielly is so isolated. He can't see the absurdity in his own biases...zero awareness of the world at large, much less his own "self." Hilarious, if not so tragic. Maybe FauxSnooze requires a litmus test of their propaganda readers which requires both tunnel-vision and deafness.

It boggles my mind that someone who's had a show for this many years in which he babbles on about whatever crosses his mind could be this ignorant. What, does he live in a cave or something?? He must be pushing 70 by now - that's more than enough time to have understood the basics of humanity. People this stupid shouldn't be allowed to talk, let alone given their own show!

And I have to say this is one of the most embarassing things I have ever heard. This is a comment that comes out of a man who considers himself "well educated" If that is being well educated then our system is falling terribly short. How can a man like this stay on the air? Maybe the studio is the vacuum he needs to feel important, and to express this medieval view about other americans on national radio?!?! The tragic irony is I'm sure he feels he said nothing out of the ordinary. Bill you are a disgrace to the people of this country that are truly trying to stamp out ignorance. You sit there in your suit with your show and try and be so high and mighty with people who don't think like you do (being disrespectful of your guests, constantly interrupting) you only prove to everyone the self righteous biggot you really are. It's people like you who try to keep thoughts mired in the past instead of soaring towards the future. I don't understand how someone like this even gets air time.

Bill O'Rielly Give the Irish a Bad Name

Is this guy an idiot or just stupid? As an American of Irish, Scottish, and Native American decent, all I can say is he must have been adopted and/or stole his name. If you ever listen to this guy, he one big contradiction after another. He makes statements that are so profoundly stupid, that I don't think he even understands what he is saying. But as some said, a lot of people listen to him on a regular basis and buy his books which have no basis for any facts, he babbles continuously, and at times sound like either a raving madman or a borderline retard. What can I say, he makes the perfect republican.

Blow-hard jerk Bill O'Reilly is seeing himself and his sad viewers, most of whom if Im not mistaken are 60+ years old (no disrespect to senior citizens; just something to remember about FOX noise makers), when he looks at other people and thinks they're dumb herd animals. Look in the mirror FOX news bigots.

what a revelation, Billo.

Here's some more news for you, Bill... Its not just New York... there are "black" restraunts all over the country as clean and nice as any "white" restraunts.

Maybe BU and Harvard kept you away from all the minorities in the area when you were in school.

Many comments have expressed wonder at how a man like Billo has his own show. He would not, without the support of ownership. Australian Ruppert Murdoch (News Corp) owns Fox, Fox News, The New York Post, The Weekly Standard, TV Guide, Harper Collins, Direct TV and 35 other TV stations thanks to the loosening of FCC regulations. Not long ago the nation was up in arms because a foreign entity in Dubai was about to purchase a company that would put them in charge of operating our ports. Why are we not up in arms that anyone, let alone a foreigner, be able to control so large an amount of our media? For in many ways the media forms the message and, thus, our culture.

WRONG WRONG WRONG WRONG

and I am not referring to Bill O'Reilly for once, but to this report and the comments that follow.

I hate Bill O'Reilly. I contribute comments regularly to Newshounds, a site dedicated to de-spinning Fox spin. But a friend sent me a link to a recording of the show, and taken in context these comments are innocuous and don't come across the way they do out of context. The entire segment is worth listening to before you make up your mind.

http://tinyurl.com/2y4taj

Let's not go down the road of blanket demonizing people without the FACTS like the right-wingers do. We have to rise above that. Even O'Reilly is right or at least not totally wrong occasionally. the overall effect and intention of his radio piece was not racist but exactly the opposite.

i have to agree completely with pegleg peggy. i despise o'reilley. he's terrible.

but what's worse? hack job articles like this. seriously. the quotes are all taken completely out of context, misrepresenting what is being said. for alternet to just cut and paste a sham of an article from media matters is shameful. for us, as readers, to just accept what is being pushed without verifying it is sad.

i almost wish it were true, because maybe it would be the final straw in getting o'reilley removed like the boil that he is. but it's not.

listen to the tape.

he says some sillly stuff, but it's not here. (although there is a caller that calls in and talks about how rap music taught her to sell drugs - nonsense.)
