Republicans Love This Democratic Congress

Posted by Chris Bowers at 6:17 AM on September 21, 2007.

Chris Bowers: It makes sense, since the conservative governing majority in DC hasn't been stopped by Democratic control of Congress.

Via TPM election central, this new poll from Gallup pretty much sums it all up:

Republicans approve of a Democratic controlled Congress significantly more than do either Democrats or Independents. Really, it makes sense, since the conservative governing majority in Washington has not been stopped by Democratic control of Congress. FISA was passed into law. The Iraq war has escalated, without any conditions being attached to it. Liberal political speech is condemned on the floor of the Senate. Republican filibusters are at a record high blocking everything in sight, and when that fails there is still Bush's veto to whip Congress into line. Effectively, Washington is still governing to the benefit of Republicans, and to the disgust of Democrats and Independents.

You know, I have to admit, that outside of the residual forces disaster, Hillary Clinton is rapidly moving up in my rankings of Democratic candidates for President. Say whatever else you want about the Clintons, but they don't take bullshit Republican attacks lying down or cowering in a corner. And if there is one thing I can't stand right now it is Democrats who won't stand up for themselves, who stab their allies in the back in order to appeal to D.C. elites and Republicans, and then ask us to keep fighting for them. At least Clinton fights back, and hard, whenever attacks are directed her way. That is a big plus in my book.

Update: Also worth reading: Chris Dodd on the MoveOn votes.

This is no doubt one of the ugliest periods in American political history.

I'm not. I was hoping the Dems would gain control of Congress last year, so their true colors would show. Now they are.

THEY HAVE AN AGENDA, and we're seeing it. Words lie, actions tell the truth. They intend to keep the war going, and Bush in office. They have ways to end both, which they refuse to use. Explicitly. And they do not intend to reverse the Bush abuses of the Constitution; if they did, they would be impeaching him, as that's the only way to get the veto out of the way.

They COULD end the war, you know: it takes only a majority in the House, or 41 votes in the Senate, to refuse the funding. End of war, troops come home. No, the military will not leave them hanging out there with no supplies and yes, the Pentagon has the money to bring them home. And yes, the Congress knows that.

The Democrats like this war. Remember who got us into Vietnam?

So now, the real question: what are you going to do about it?

Um, the phrase "FISA was passed into law" makes no sense and needs correcting.

FISA was passed into law in 1978. If you're going to refer to the recent changes to it, please do so correctly so as not to confuse less informed readers and make progressives sound even more ignorant.

yeah i'm disappointed in what congress hasn't done. have to remember we don't have 60 votes in the senate to cut off debate and don't have the votes to override vetoes. still we should hold the repug's feet to the fire on filibusters like they did the dems when the repugs had power. the house and the senate should be passing legislation reflective of the way that dems would govern at this time and let bush veto the legislation. then the dems could run against that which would be better than running against obstructionist gop minority which is what they're going to have to do if things keep going the way they are going now.

having said all that i'm still going to vote democratic because almost any democrat as president and as a senator or representative is more likely to do something closer to what i support or can live with than just about any repug. surely we have all learned at least that much since the 2000 and 2004 elections.

....but the two parties are Cowardly Conservative and Rightwing Radical. Liberal policies, laws, and opinions are nowhere to be seen. The Reagan Revolution is still in full swing, to the long-lasting shame of this country.
