Yesterday, by a 5-3 vote, the City Council of San Diego passed a resolution supporting marriage equality. Jerry Sanders, the Republican mayor-- who campaigned opposing marriage equality-- announced this morning that he had changed his mind and would sign the resolution instead of vetoing it. A former Chief of Police, Sanders, tearfully also announced that one of his daughters, Lisa, is gay and that he would lead with his heart. "The concept of a separate but equal institution is something that I cannot support," he explained, tearfully, with his wife standing at his time." Please watch the video; it is very powerful.

The San Diego Union-Tribune covered his press conference. "The mayor's new stance marked a reversal of his pledge Tuesday to use his veto power to block the council's move. At the time, he repeated his preference for civil unions, partnerships between same-sex couples that offer some but not all of the legal protections given to those who marry."

He began by explaining his refusal to veto the council's decision, saying his beliefs had "evolved significantly" since 2005, when he established his stance on civil unions during his first mayoral campaign.
In the time since, he said he realized he could not accept "the concept of a separate-but-equal institution." Because of that, he continued, he was unwilling to send the message to anyone that "they were less important, less worthy or less deserving of the rights and responsibilities of marriage."
The mayor, now crying openly, noted that he has close family members and friends in the gay and lesbian community, including staff members and "my daughter Lisa."

"In the end, I couldn't look any of them in the face and tell them that their relationships, their very lives, were any less meaningful than the marriage I share with my wife, Rana," said Sanders, who quickly thanked reporters and dashed from the room.
Councilwoman Toni Atkins, a lesbian who pushed the city to take a stand on same-sex marriage, praised Sanders, calling him courageous for telling gay San Diegans that he supports them receiving "equal protection under the law."

... good argument for empathy... so we don't have to wait around until every official who opposes equal marriage rights has a gay kid of their own to finally change their minds.

to get elected and then changes his tune', or 'sells out' (depending on your read of the issue)? This is a unique phenomena? Crying?!? Come on that has been a tried-and-true method to get votes and public sympathy for several decades now. I was just waiting to hear about his 'battle with alcohol' or 'internal demons'. That would have assured him not only re-election but a spot on Oprah and The View. Break out the violins and the kleenex! What a joke.....I wonder if there are any politicians left who don't wear their heart of their sleeve and stick with the views/politicies they expressed to get themselves elected?
ps: this is not to say his current stance is wrong but simply that if all politicians lie, change their views, and cry can any be trusted? What is a vote worth if there is no substance, steadfastness, or truth in the people for whom we vote?

Why would anyone on the left think negatively about this? Isn't this the definition of success? Someone on the right having a change of heart? Isn't this what each side struggles to do? Change the others way of thinking? Regardless of your feelings on gay marriage you must see that what this guy did took courage and true leadership. I doubt this had anything to do with political expediency.

Why the fussings continue...

Just can NOT fanthom why the never ending FUSS regarding the TERMINOLOGY..Frankly, pigeon-holing the word "marriage" and designating it GODs word/will etc..making it a "religious" issue...uh, how about if ALL are bound by a CIVIL UNION LAW, and that for those desiring, they can have their RELIGIOUS ceremony in accordance with their respective religious organization/chursh/temple/etc...There are such that will "bless or give a religious servicing to those couples of the same sex" , so if one needs/desires/etc such "religious" overtonings, seek such out...BUT UNITE THE COUNTRY BY DEMANDING ALL HAVE CIVIL UNIONS and all those various previously identified "bennies" of "marriage" are then conferred to the couples--be they of the same sex or opposites...SIMPLE SOLUTION FOLKS...stop the haggling, we've got other real issues to deal with to get this homeland in order. CIVIL UNIONS FOR ALL, recognized NATIONALLY WITHOUT EXCEPTION, EQUAL TREATMENT BY LAW OF CIVIL UNIONS....champion that and progress could be made as well as energy spent on other critical matterings !!!!

Mayor Sanders, the first progressive republican?

It is nice to see that even a republican can be progressive. I just hope that he doesn't flip flop like Mitt Romney. It's about time that a republican grew balls and went against the main stream of his party. This shows that equality can happen in America. Now the rest of them need to wake up, smell the coffee and remember that all Americans are equal. Not just Evangelicals.

San Diego and The UnionTribune

I lived in San Diego for a number of years, and was a part of one of the first anti-war activist groups there that started up before the bombs dropped on Iraq (Imagine being around the U.S. Navy community and the Camp Pendleton Marines - whew!)

Anyway, the Union-Tribune is one piece of shit right-wing rag. They were so afraid of offending their racist homophobic wealthy subscribers and supporting businesses that they fired James Goldsborough, one of the best columnists a newspaper could ever have. They just couldn't handle Mr. Goldsborough raining on their pathetic party.

Now expect more heat on the mayor by the Union Tribune and its rabid right-wing supporters (not to mention the number of homophobic religious zealots in the area). The only counter will be the ever-increasing progressive community that is building throughout San Diego. I hope they can beat back the fascist venom of the Union Tribune.

...is just that and idiots who pretend to embrace it as anything else are fooling themselves.

Marriage is an institution exclusively about child-rearing where any other choice of sexual preference obviously does not qualify.
