Iraq Convoy Sent to Its Death By Halliburton-KBR

Posted by Robert Greenwald at 10:53 AM on September 3, 2007.

Robert Greenwald: Truck drivers were sent into a region they were told was going to cost lives purely for the financial gain of Halliburton-KBR.

Thomas Hamill of Mississippi was leading the convoy when it was ambushed. Taken captive by a band of gunmen, he escaped after a few weeks and was able to return home. “When I went over there, I said: ‘I won’t refuse to go out on a mission as long as the U.S. Army is willing to escort me out,’” he said.

This post, written by Robert Greenwald, originally appeared on Brave New Films

The devastating details of war profiteering are front and center in a major story in the Los Angeles Times this morning.

With emails, internal communications and details, the story provides heartbreaking insight into the decision by Halliburton-KBR to send truck drivers to their death.

In working on IRAQ FOR SALE, this story of the "Friday massacre" was one of the most devastating sections of the film. All of us who worked on the film continue to be haunted by the interviews we did with the two surviving truck drivers, and the wives and children of the truck drivers who were killed. The section of the film where we expose this profiteering continues to outrage and inflame audiences. Todays article in the Times will intensity the outrage as well it should.

The decision to send these truck drivers into a region they were told was going to cost lives was made for the pure financial gain of Halliburton-KBR. It brings home once again the disaster of building profit into the war effort. And the irony of Halliburton threatening the Times with a possible lawsuit!

We must continue to insist that investigations continue and legislation be passed to stop the corporations who have made a science of profit over patriotism.

Is Palin a Step Backwards for Women in Power?
Sarah Palin is a milestone, for we achieve true gender equality when an incompetent woman goes as far as an incompetent man.

Irony? Why would this situation be described as ironic considering

all we know about Blackwater? Or, considering the actual definition, and use, of the word 'ironic' or 'irony'? Anyone who has read about Blackwater (I suggest Scahill's book for an introduction) or knows anything about grammar and/or English (seemingly always lacking on Alternet) would not summarise this story by using 'irony' to describe the possible, and actual, suit(s) taken by Blackwater. There is nothing 'ironic' in the machinations of Blackwater.
