UPDATE: What you talkin' bout Larry? Aide says the Sen. Craig has no plans to resign!

The Idaho press secretary to Sen. Larry Craig (R-ID) says the senator plans to return to work to continue "business as usual" next week after the Senate's recess.

"Despite reports today quoting anonymous 'GOP sources" that embattled Sen. Larry Craig, R-Idaho., will resign Friday, his aide says the Senator will return to Washington, D.C. next week to continue his work as best he can, Craig's Idaho press secretary tells ABC News," ABC News' Ronna Waldman reports.

"If that plan changes, the media will be notified, the aide said."

ABC News did not identify who the press secretary was. Nor did they include any direct quotations.

CNN reported live on air at 9:02 am ET that Sen. Larry Craig (R-ID) was expected to resign after an escapade involving the solicitation of an undercover police officer in a Minneapolis bathroom.

"Several well-placed GOP sources in Washington and Idaho say embattled Republican Sen. Larry Craig is likely to resign soon, possibly as early as Friday," CNN said.

"A GOP source with knowledge of the situation told CNN's Dana Bash that the Republican National Committee was poised to take the extraordinary step of calling on Craig to resign."

Fox News followed up moments later by saying the senator would resign today.

"Craig is expected to resign but if he doesn't the Republican party is prepared to act against him," a Fox reporter said. The "GOP has prepared a statement calling on him to resign but they are holding it. They say that if he doesn't resign they will not support his campaign and will actively recruit and campaign against him. They are sending him many signals that he does not have a choice but to resign."

Party leaders were going to issue a statement calling on Craig to resign, but held back. Craig is suspected to have told them he would do it himself.

Senate insiders are being tight-lipped about details, the network said.

I expect him to assure us all that he is still totally "not gay" and that he'll blame the press, somehow, for this incident which has absolutely nothing to do with them. Now he'll have plenty of time to spend in the closet...err I mean, with his family.

UPDATE: RNC Drafts Statement Calling on Craig to Resign

WASHINGTON — Idaho Sen. Larry Craig is considering resigning, Republican officials said Friday, after days of public and private pressure stemming from his arrest in June in a police undercover operation at an airport men's room.

Craig pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct on Aug. 1, and while he has since said he did nothing wrong, the episode has roiled the Republican party and produced numerous calls for him to step down.

As a measure of the pressure Craig faces, party officials said a statement had been drafted at Republican Party headquarters calling for the third-term senator to resign. It was not issued, these officials said, in response to concerns that it might complicate quiet efforts under way to persuade the 62-year-old lawmaker to give up his seat.

Any resignation would clear the way for Gov. C.L. "Butch" Otter, a Republican, to name a replacement who would serve until the end of Craig's current term in 2009. Lt. Gov. James Risch and Rep. Mike Simpson were among the possible replacements, according to the GOP officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the matter publicly.

Craig has not made any public statements about his case since an appearance earlier this week in Boise, Idaho, in which he said he had done nothing wrong. "I am not gay. I never have been gay," he added emphatically.

He said any additional comment would be posted on his official Web site, where the only reference to the incident as of Friday morning was a text of the statement he read before the television cameras.

Craig, 62, served in the House before winning his first Senate term in 1990, and compiled a strongly conservative voting record.

He was arrested on June 11 by an undercover police officer in a Minneapolis airport men's room who said the senator had engaged in conduct "often used by persons communicating a desire to engage in sexual conduct."

Minutes after he was arrested for lewd conduct, Craig denied soliciting for sex, saying "I'm not gay. I don't do these kinds of things," according to an audio tape released by police on Thursday.

He denied that he had used foot and hand gestures to signal interest in a sexual encounter. The officer, Sgt. Dave Karsnia, accused the three-term senator of lying and grew exasperated with his denials.

"Embarrassing, embarrassing. No wonder why we're going down the tubes," Karsnia said.

In the police interview, Craig, 62, never admitted doing anything wrong and said his actions had been misinterpreted. However, Karsnia wrote in his report that the gestures were consistent with efforts to find a sexual partner in the men's room.

Craig later pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of disorderly conduct, which he now calls a mistake.

More Republicans distanced themselves from Craig on Thursday. Sen. John Ensign of Nevada, who chairs the GOP's senatorial campaign committee, stopped short of calling on him to resign but suggested strongly that he should.

"I wouldn't put myself hopefully in that kind of position, but if I was in a position like that, that's what I would do," Ensign told The Associated Press in his home state. "He's going to have to answer that for himself."

The party's Senate leadership had previously called for the ethics committee to investigate, and on Wednesday took the highly unusual measure of asking him to give up his seniority in committee positions. Craig complied.

On the tape, Craig and the arresting officer can be heard arguing over what happened in the men's room minutes earlier. Craig acknowledges that the men's feet bumped but says nothing improper happened.

"Did we bump? Yes, I think we did. You said so. I don't disagree with that," Craig said.

But Craig disputes the officer's account that he swept his hand under the stall next to him in an apparent effort to advance the encounter. They even disagree whether Craig used his right hand or his left hand.

Craig said he was merely trying to pick up a piece of paper _ an account the officer disputes.

"I'm telling you that I could see, so I know that's your left hand. Also I could see a gold ring on this finger, so that's obvious it was the left hand," Karsnia tells Craig.

"Well we can dispute that," Craig says. "I'm not going to fight you in court. I reached down with my right hand to pick up the paper."

Karsnia said in a police report that he recognized Craig's hand gesture as a signal aimed at initiating sex. "It should be noted that there was not a piece of paper on the bathroom floor, nor did Craig pick up a piece of paper," he said in the report.

Karsnia, 29, joined the airport police department just out of college in 2000 and was promoted to sergeant in 2005. Last year, he earned a master's degree in criminal justice, leadership and education.

Haven't you been paying attention? He doesn't frequent closets. He loiters in public restrooms.

Hey Larry, a friend of mine, he's in his mid-20s, good looking, he says you're kind of hot. No, I'm serious.

Name the restroom and the time and he'll be there.

The angle of the chin, the steely resolve in the eyes, the overall pugnacious attitude of the Senator in the picture says it all, to whit:

I am five years old and have been caught with my hand in the cookie jar. So there.

I could care less who's gay and who isn't. I could care less about hookers or anyone, much less politicians, hooking up with them. I think prostitution ought to be legal, so morally I don't have a problem with it. However, the fact that this guy was such an outspoken homophobe, and reviled gay people whenever he got the chance makes me livid. That's why I hope he resigns. He appears to be one of those people who perform homosexual acts but remains in denial that they are homosexual. This sort of situation seems to be a repetitive problem within the party of no tolerance for gays. I also believe, though, that it takes a high level of self-hate for any gay person to be in the republican party and vote against their own self-interests. This must be some sort of psychological phenomenon that I truly don't understand. In any case, I also find it disgusting hypocritical that Craig's treatment is so much worse than Vitter's. Is it because Craig solicited a MALE and Vitter solicited a FEMALE?

Self-interested corporate puppetmasters are just as complicit in the insane tyranny your country is becoming as the cowardly neocon fools. Both direct maleable, lowlife lackeys (e.g. cheney, bush, et al) to use their seized 'power' to bully everyone else to ensure they get things their way. Immature, insecure, pityful people to a one, regardless of which party they're affiliated with.

This type of organized aggression is not such a big deal on the playgrounds of our childhood, but is potentially devastating - globally - in this context. Will you Americans please wake up!

Though you seem to have slipped so far into jaded apathy I wonder if you have any energy left for hope and resistance, here are a couple of suggestions:

Boycott all products from the worst corporate offenders. Five of the most obscene are: Altria (Philip Morris), Merck, ExxonMobil, Dow and Monsanto. I'm sure you have your own favourites as well.

And if your foul 'leaders' do appear about to attack Iran, everyone locate the nearest federal government office (they have some sort of presence virtually everwhere - it doesn't really matter which department, though I suppose Defence would be the most appropriate) and simply go there, en masse, and make yourselves seen and heard - no violence, just disagreement and visibility. There are thousands of people just as decent and affronted as you working in the federal government, and they can't help but be swayed by the sight of so many; so angry and so determined not to be abused any longer.

Or you could just sit around and let it all happen, yet again, until eventually the rest of us have to clean up your mess . . . if there's anyone left, that is.

I listened to the taped interview of Sen. Craig and really had to completely agree with Lionel from Air America. What was the crime? All the undercover cop had to do was tell Craig to back off (if he was hitting on him). If he didn't back off, then maybe that would be another story...I heard no offer of money so I really think that he plead guilty to anything was totally stupid. Yes, Law Enforcement has better things to do. If Law Enforcement arrested everyone who tried to pick up someone, whether they be homosexual or heterosexual, wouldn't most of America be entering pleas in courts all over this country?

The Republicans did show their true colors again and it's not about the red, white, and blue, it's about the yellow stripe many of them wear because of their homophobic nature! I do understand though, why many homosexual people do not wish to disclose. Perhaps Craig is a good example. His party immediately throws him overboard! Too bad he didn't stand up for himself and tell them all that his sexual orientation was none of their business, that he was staying, and would be rethinking his biased behavior.

Then maybe he could apologize for all of his narrowminded comments about sexual orientation and behavior regarding others.
