This post, written by David Swanson, originally appeared on After Downing Street

Every corporate media outlet in the country believes a story that Democrats.com reported months ago is the top news of the day. Here's the Los Angeles Times version:

BREAKING NEWS: Sen. Craig denies being gay

"I am not gay," Sen. Larry Craig said twice during a 10-minute statement today following news that he had pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct after being arrested at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport on suspicion of lewd behavior in a men's restroom in June.

Numerous major media outlets did not report the following:

BREAKING NEWS: Cheney denies being human

"I am not human," Vice President Dick Cheney said twice during a 10-minute statement today following news that he had refused to comply with subpoenas, created and advocated for the "Unitary Executive Theory" which is used by the White House to defy laws duly enacted by Congress and thereby justify dictatorial action, played a key role in setting up illegal spying programs, coordinated a campaign to obstruct the investigation conducted by Patrick Fitzgerald, organized a campaign of retribution against whistleblower Joseph Wilson that included the outing of a covert CIA operative, led efforts to institute the routine use of torture, spearheaded a campaign to manipulate pre-war intelligence, created a secret Energy Task Force which operated in defiance of open-government laws, directed massive no-bid contracts to his company, Halliburton, profiting from the same illegal war he had defrauded the American public to launch, and threatened an aggressive attack on the nation of Iran.

Instead, the LA Times reported:

"I did nothing wrong at the Minneapolis airport and I regret the decision to plead guilty," the Idaho Republican added. He said he had "overreacted" to the stress of the moment and did not consult with family or an attorney. The revelations of the arrest and guilty plea, first made by John McArdle in the Roll Call newspaper yesterday, threw the conservative world of Idaho politics into turmoil.

Not a single media outlet in the nation reported:

A major push in the House of Representatives to impeach Attorney General Alberto Gonzales helped spur his resignation. That Cheney and Bush have committed impeachable offenses is not disputed by anyone in Washington. They have made refusing to comply with subpoenas a routine occurrence. The House Judiciary Committee in 1974 passed an article of impeachment against then President Richard Nixon for the same offense. In possibly the most direct attack on the separation of powers possible, President Bush has posted numerous "signing statements" drafted by Cheney's office on the White House website announcing his intention to violate laws that he himself signed into law. A Government Accounting Office study looked at a sample of these signing statements and found that in 30% of the cases examined, the executive branch has proceeded to violate the laws in question. Of course, Bush has confessed to violating the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act and is on videotape on several occasions over a period of years dishonestly claiming he was not doing so. Far from being unaware of this, Congress has gone to the trouble of legalizing it.

Yet, the 20 cosponsors of articles of impeachment against Cheney do not have the support of the Democratic leadership. Congressman Rahm Emanuel has told the Washington Post that the Democrats want to be sure to keep the occupation of Iraq going until the 2008 elections. Senator Hillary Clinton's military advisor has told Ted Koppel that she intends to keep the occupation going until at least 2017. Asked what she thought of this, an ordinary American said "What's the scam? You're writing for the corporate media and you want to know what I think? Do you have me confused with some billionaire with a similar name? All right, I'll play along. I think Congress is throwing our nation away and endangering the planet for the sake of an election strategy that is doomed to fail because a lot of other people agree with me. The Democrats aren't weak on terror, as I'm sure you'll end up writing. They're weak on Bush and Cheney."

Bizarrely, the Democratic leadership is claiming that there is no evidence of impeachable offenses, that impeachment would take too long, that there are other priorities, and that they "don't have the votes." Essentially no one believes this line, since the evidence is public knowledge, there are 18 months left in Bush and Cheney's terms, any bills legislating Democratic priorities are virtually certain to be vetoed, and public pressure would either sway votes or punish impeachment opponents at the polls.

Several major media outlets did not announce that they would conduct surveys to gauge the public's support for impeachment. Instead, the Los Angeles Times reported on the grave matter of another closet homosexual Republican Senator:

The 27-year veteran of Washington said the stress was compounded by the Idaho Statesman newspaper, which he said had for eight months "relentlessly and viciously harassed" him and his family. He apologized to his family and the people of Idaho. The 62-year-old Craig is up for reelection next year, but his political future seems clouded now in what has been a safe Republican Senate seat since the days of Ronald Reagan. Even conservative bloggers such as Hugh Hewitt were urging Craig to give up his seat today and allow another Republican to salvage it in a political year when the GOP already must defend more congressional seats than the Democrats.

Nobody asked the public nationally whether they gave a flying fig for this story, and no strategists put it in the context of the endless cases of Republicans getting ugly pathetic intellectually-challenged hypocrites elected who voted the way their crowd wanted them to vote, which might have tended to suggest that the public sometimes cared about substance.

In Washington, Senate Republican leaders called for an investigation by the ethics...committee. "This is a serious matter," according to a statement by the leadership, which includes Sens. Mitch McConnell, Trent Lott, Jon Kyl, John Ensign and Kay Bailey Hutchinson. They also said they would investigate to determine if further action was warranted.

Just what I said months ago. The Democrats WANT to keep Bush/Cheney in office, and the war going, because it will destroy the Republican Party and give them a free ride in 2008.

Quoting Swanson: ". Congressman Rahm Emanuel has told the Washington Post that the Democrats want to be sure to keep the occupation of Iraq going until the 2008 elections." Re-read the rest of the paragraph. He lays it out neatly.

It would be a good strategy, except for a couple of things:

It's morally defective.

Their blatant non-performance is putting the Dems deep in the toilet, too. The Democratic Congress is polling down with Darth Cheney. Not a good sign for 2008. I didn't think anybody could revive the Republicans' chances for '08, but maybe Reid and Pelosi can prove me wrong.

And finally, a free ride for them is also a free ride for the alternative parties. Welcome to the Year of No Spoilers, with a 5-way race for the presidency and probably for Congress, too.

Why would anyone vote for a party that is willing to subject us to 18 more months of this administration, just for their own political benefit? Remember, there is a peace party, there is a real progressive party in this country: the Greens.

Welcome to the Party.

All we got was a three word direct quote: "I'm not human."-nothing in the context of a larger quote.

Either give me the complete text of his reply or the video tape. We all have decided he wasn't human-I just want to see him saying it!

I have performed a search for the source of the claim that Vice President Dick Cheney is not human. I searched in Google, MSN and Yahoo. I found no evidence of this claim. I am therefore requesting that Alternet or the author himself provide, proof of the nature of the source. I find no HUMOR in the formation of a journalistic article, with the expressed intent of passing it on as geniune. This is the same type of GARBAGE that "The Onion" is known for and frankly it makes me ill to say the least.

Terrific

Cheney Not Human

I did not know Cheney said that about himself, I wonder what the context was for his saying that. Was he joking or serious? Knowing the context would be very much more illuminating.

Either way it is a revealing statement. And it akin to Bush's claiming to be Jesus Christ on four occasions.

What is it with these guys, these Republicans and these right wingers who do their dirty deeds, political and otherwise, in the name of God. Their 'close personal relationship with Jesus Christ' not only brings God down to their level but equally raises themselves to the level of God.

That is a clear example, in religious circles,of the sin of PRIDE, setting oneself equal to God. Also it demonstrates a complete lack of HUMILITY.

While in behavioral/psychiatric circles, people who act in the name of God are megalomaniacs with a messianic complex, and candidates for mental hospitals, needing a psychiatric evaluation. Using Freud's framework, their Id-Ego-Superego is unbalanced, to say the least. They are all Id-Ego, and lacking in or possibly bereft of any superego(conscience). These kind of people are driven mostly or entirely (albeit not likely) by their Id-Ego needs.

This could/would stem from a childhood lacking in emotional nurturance/ warmth, either physical(as in poverty) or emotional. IOW, what a child experiences is what he/she thinks is all their is to the world and that everyone else thinks and behaves in similar ways as they do and as their parents/ caregivers did.

Cheney fits that scenario very well. He is cold and ruthless when dealing with others and very possibly in dealing with his own children, as well. Lynn Cheney also fits the cold and warped aspect of that scenario, being a bisexual and possessing cruel and harsh tendencies. Just listen to her speeches and read her writings.

These tendencies are possessed by many, many successful and greedy business people, who are often lacking in conscience. IOW, their cruelty and lack of conscience is what makes them successful.

I have often thought that successful religious leaders are much the same. And I include those of my own religion, Catholicism(a fundamentalist religion) as well as the evangelical fundamentalist religions. However, I certainly don't doubt that their are truly good, pious and holy/saintly religious people. But their 'light' is obscured by the present day vicious right wing religious leaders.

Greg Boyd, an ex-catholic, may be one of the aforementioned 'good' religious leaders. Although I must admit to being only superficially familiar with his religious beliefs.

Having said all of the above , what exactly could Cheney be thinking/ feeling for him to have made that statement. Maybe he is unknowingly expressing a lack of emotional feeling/ sensation due to a very walled off(think self protective) and out of touch with his feelings sensation that makes him feel disconnected from the human race; ie. 'alien' to the human race, the family of man.

I suspect that many if not most religious leaders are much the same as Cheney and Bush and many Republicans and some corporate Dems who have no sense or at least a very diminished sense of their covenant with others, who have a greater sense of covenance with and conscience for others.

Cont'd below

The Republicans must be singled out due to their lack of social conscience, preferring things, including money and political domination over everyones lives.

Simply put, they hate spending money(their god, the golden calf and the corporatocracy) on others(think Katrina victims); preferring to use taxpayer dollars for corporate welfare rather than for taxpayer/people welfare. All of which illuminates their lack of covenance with God's children and thus their lack of covenance with God.

And still they loudly proclaim their moral superiority, over and over and over, ad infinitum and ad nauseam. Who are they trying to convince. Methinks themselves, because the rest of us are not fooled by there endless protestations and their moral certitude which in all reality is nothing more than their egregious moral relativism(ie. it's moral if they say it's moral). Hypocrisy runs rampant among them.

And like it's a surprise anyway? Seriously, I really think his ticker - measly, withered little thing that is - isn't getting enough oxygen, and that means his brain (or whatever it is; an old 386, maybe) isn't either. He's getting more paranoid by the day, it seems like. We've got to find a way to pull the plug on him before he starts playing with the firing codes...

p.s. -- "The Greens" are one of the main reasons we got into the situation in the first place. Infighting has a place among progressives -- that place is the future, NOT NOW, MORONS.

If this is the best Swanson can do, you need to drop him as a contributor.

* No date is listed for when this alledged statement was made
* No source is mentioned to lend even minimal credibility
* Swanson can't write for $hit. That paragraph is all but unintelligible: it's one long sentence. Geez, even a 5th grader knows better than that.

Alternet too often resorts to this kind of screeching shrillness. It hurts not just your credibility but that of all who espouse a fairer, more just, more equitable--i.e. progressive--society in this country.
