Sen. Craig's Lewdness: Hidden In Plain Sight

Was it too much to ask back in 1982 that Craig be kicked to the curb when he was accused of molesting underage Congressional pages?

In spite of his heated denials today, Senator Craig has left quite a trail of slime over the years. Editor and Publisher has the scoop on the rumors, the repeated accusations, and the Idaho senator's persistent efforts to bury the truth.

In its story today about Craig's arrest, the Statesman revealed that it had uncovered evidence of other Craig liaisons or sexual advances, including allegations that he had sex with a man in a Union Station bathroom in Washington, D.C., but had not previously reported it. "Until Monday, the Statesman had declined to run a story about Craig's sex life, because the paper didn't have enough corroborating evidence and because of the senator's steadfast denial."

But the paper also revealed, "Over five months, the Statesman examined rumors about Craig dating to his college days and his 1982 pre-emptive denial that he had sex with underage congressional pages. The most serious finding by the Statesman was the report by a professional man with close ties to Republican officials. The 40-year-old man reported having oral sex with Craig at Washington's Union Station, probably in 2004. The Statesman also spoke with a man who said Craig made a sexual advance toward him at the University of Idaho in 1967 and a man who said Craig "cruised" him for sex in 1994 at the REI store in Boise. The Statesman also explored dozens of allegations that proved untrue, unclear, or unverifiable."

In other words, the evidence was out there all along. When activist Mike Rogers posted a report last October examining Senator Craig's lengthy list of sexual indiscretions with men, it looked like a duck, walked like a duck, and quacked like a duck, so of course, Big Media and the Right Wing Noise Machine pronounced it...a swimming chicken. "Senator Craig isn't gay, he just sucks a lot of cock. That doesn't really make a guy gay, does it?"

Glenn Greenwald:

Nonetheless, it is hard to overstate the intense fury that this pre-election report triggered from the Right -- not at Senator Craig for engaging in this behavior, but at Rogers for reporting it. A virtually unanimous chorus on the Right furiously insisted that nothing could be more irrelevant than whether the married family values Senator had sex with men in bathrooms (acts that are simultaneously criminal and adulterous). The same political movement that impeached Bill Clinton and which has made a living exploiting issues of private morality for political gain insisted that Rogers had reached a new and despicable low in politics even by reporting this.

Of course, now that the writing is on the (bathroom) wall, the same cabal of mealy-mouthed Righty scolds are baying for Craig's resignation, and they're only stopping there because they can't get away with openly calling for his execution. Although I feel fairly confident that Ace of Spades, some Red State mouth-breather, or another barely functional "Compassionate Conservative" will get around to it in the next few days. One thing you can always count on from America's Junior Fascist brigades, they always Go There.

But back to their reactions from October when we first tried to warn them:

And at least at the time, Barnett was right. Among right-wing pundits -- weeks before the election -- there was nothing but support for Craig and outrage over the reporting of this story. The most hysterical outrage of all was from Glenn Reynolds, who went so far as repeatedly to predict -- literally-- that the country would be so repulsed by Rogers' reporting that it might actually swing the election in favor of the Republicans.

(...)

As usual, Bush-supporting bloggers like Ann Althouse and Patterico dutifully echoed Reynolds' line: "I truly believe this sort of tactic is going to create a backlash." Identically, Michelle Malkin's Hot Air actually convinced itself, as Reynolds did, that the Craig report was so despicable that it might save the GOP from defeat:

Three kids, nine grandkids. Supposedly spending his leisure time in the men's room at Union Station. . . . It's been said before but it bears repeating: the left always finds a way to shoot itself in the foot. Patterico expects a backlash. So do I. In fact, I haven't felt this motivated to vote in weeks. . . . .

If a U.S. Senator was going to have a tryst -- especially a gay tryst -- would he really do it in the men's room of one of the busiest places in D.C.?

Um, yeah. Have you not yet noticed that the man isn't very smart? This is more than clearly evinced by his decision to stand and fight in the face of overwhelming evidence that he's a nasty old pervert who gets his jollies planting his knees in pools of stale urine on public restroom floors and fellating total strangers. La Malkin, of course, is slow to pick up on this salient fact about the Senior Senator from Idaho because she's not exactly on the short list for a Nobel Prize, either, poor little addle-headed thing.

I guess it would be too much to ask back in 1982 that Craig be kicked to the curb when he was accused of molesting underage Congressional pages. Perhaps timely intervention a quarter-century ago could have prevented the mess that was the Mark Foley scandal, not to mention providing some scrap of evidence (however small) that boy-rape is not part and parcel with the Republican attitude toward underage pages.

But, whatever. Doubtless the waves of young boys who were improperly solicited and seduced by members of Congress in the intervening two and a half decades were little "beasts" as Matt Drudge says, who were egging the older men on and deserved whatever they got.

If the Republicans get any more sick, venal, and corrupt, their constituents may as well just start electing hyenas and poisonous snakes to Congress. Who could tell the difference?

If this was a Democrat think of the hellabaloo of a firestorm the the religious wrong would unleash on our tender ears.
Instead the man's family is trotted our for our admiration.
There used to be a double standard for men and women which today is morphing into a double standard for Democrats and Republicans

Sure, Craig is not in the executive branch but the same thing applies - if you have enough money or power, then the rules and laws don’t apply to you. Just like Bush, Gonzales, Rove, Vick, Cheney and so on.

quartet. I'm not saying that it is gay or anything but....you'll find all kinds of very "gay-like" activities by these Republicans (and some Democrats) of the rich, upper-class variety. They have private, all male 'retreats' (Bohemian Grove, etc), they often attend all male boarding or prep schools, many were members of cheerleading teams and glee clubs, and they often have stage-shows at their retreats, fundraisers, roasts, and camps involving cross-dressing and males playing female roles. These types of antics are also found in Britain where much of the upper class and royalty are members of male only 'gentlemen clubs', attend all male public schools (private schools in the US), etc. There are a lot of homosexuals, or at least bi, in government and high circles, not that there is anything wrong with that.

This article, and lots of other ones going after Craig, come very close to gaybashing. There is a sense that he is a pervert and seamy b/c he is gay - especially the description of bathroom sex - men meeting men in bathrooms is still unfortunately one of the only ways they can meet b/c of homophobia - this is still true in large parts of the nation and for any man who cannot chance being outed. And saying that he should have been kicked to the curb for allegations of sex with pages would also have cost us Barney Frank.

Craig is a hypocrite and a coward. If he has in fact had sex with underage persons, that is a crime that has nothing to do with being homosexual - but I don't think the allegations there have at all been proven. Craig's hypocricy contributes to the environment that drives people like him into the closet - and into public bathrooms. His hypocricy is even worse b/c of his gay-bashing and his participation in attacking Clinton. But to call him a pervert for being gay is wrong, and especially wrong for people who profess to support tolerance and equal rights for everyone without regard to their sexual preference.

Republicans exploit prejudice for political gain
Posted by: metamind on Aug 29, 2007 10:12 AM
Current rating: 4    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
The issue is prejudice and particularly how the Republican party has systematically exploited popular prejudices for political advantage.

Consider the "Christian prejudice." Most people think of prejudice as a negative thing, as a prejudice AGAINST something. But prejudice can also be a prejudice SUPPORTING something. For example, religious prejudice IN FAVOR OF a particular religion.

Prejudice is "pre-juding" an idea, activity, individual or group of people.

If you "pre-judge" someone to be a "good person" because they are a Christian, then you have a prejudice IN FAVOR OF Christianity.

If you pre-judge someone as a "bad person" because they practice homosexual sex, then you have a prejudice AGAINST homosexuality.

The issue in both examples is PREJUDICE. If you decide to "vote your prejudices" then you are part of the problem. It is easy for any unethical politician or party to exploit your prejudices. This produces a sick society where our politics becomes a "battle between prejudices." It is the kind of politics that Republicans have practiced in recent years.

To be fair, Democrats have practiced this kind of politics too, particularly in regard to "sexual predators" and "terrorists."

Why should anyone "pre-judge" a terrorist? Why is it a bad thing? Did you know that Britain's Margaret Thatcher called South Africa's Nelson Mandela a "terrorist" in the 1980's?

Do you think that the people who led America's revolution against the British in the 1700's might have been considered "terrorists" by the British?

The issue is prejudice. Whenever you pre-judge you are exercising prejudice. To overcome prejudice you need to "get to know your enemy" or simply let yourself engage with an issue or individual without any judgment at all, but simply an honest desire to "know the truth."

The truth will set us free. The Republicans have repeatedly lied, deceived, distorted and manipulated the truth for their own political advantage. They have "played the prejudices" of the people to generate hatred, fear, division and political advantage for themselves. It is a sinister and evil thing that they have done to America.

Any party or person who dis-honors the truth should be removed from power by the people. We dis-honor the truth when we misrepresent it. We honor the truth when we humbly and honestly seek it, speak it and support it.

Teach virtue. It's the "stuff that works." Prejudice is not a virtue. Humility in an honest search for the truth is a virtue.

The path to justice is paved with the truth.

Justice is a virtue.

I too have nothing against true gays, I believe they are born that way and should not be harassed for their behavior.
It is the 2-faced hypocrits like Craig who give gays an undeserved bad name.
Also think how his family must feel after his reprehensible behavior made headlines all across the land.
I am sure more enlightened societies such as the Dutch are slapping their knees and the Muslim world is viewing as just another example do American decadence
If he is so lacking in morals that he seeks his thrills in public bathrooms I wonder if our small boys are safe from him.
Thanks I had forgotten who the Singing Senators were, I remember Ashcroft as he was the Senator from neighboring Missouri and Trent Lott whose jowls quivered when he sang songs with bs in them

Craig married his wife later in life, and "their" three children are her's from a previous marriage. So let's not let the right get away with that one.

I also don't have anything against the gay world, just keep it out of my face - get a room, not a restroom. As a railroader, there seems to be a certain fascination with having kinky sex along the tracks, or maybe just in public - both gay and straight. In certain major cities, it's not uncommon to see gay men exchanging oral sex in dark areas at night near the railroad. This is probably a side fetish of gay life (or straight life for that matter), and I'm sure most sex of all kinds takes place in private. Still, and I think this probably applies to most straight women as well about lesbians, I really don't want to see two men having gay sex in front of me. Now two hot lesbians, well....

Wellnow we see why they call themselves the GOP. Greasy Old Perverts. Nice of them to hide behind the law so they can look good to the public. This is what we get for not paying attention. Creatons like this have been in the System for generations. Sex scandles in D.C. out do Hollywood. These jerks use every trick in the book to get at you. This poor joker probably thought differently about some meaningless law and got zapped for doing what everybody that knew him, knew he did.
Here's the problem. The Wealthy, who can be pretty twisted in their own right, employ,a.k.a elect, people who are equally twisted. They let them get away with all their little twisted games as long as the right laws get passed. Disagree with them and you get caught in a bathroom sting, getting a blowjob in the closet,or,your head blown off in Dallas.
This is the Beast all good people are fighting. We have tried for many a long year to get things going right. Women's Rights,Voting Rights, all the Rights and Liberties we habe had to be fought for by the People against the control of the Wealthy. The Wealthy have corrupted the Government. That's why we have such a din of Creatons on the Hill. We need to remove this system of governance, tax the hell out of the Wealthy and make damn sure that when some public figure says he's anti this or that they had better be.
This is the tip of the iceberg as far as perverts in office go. If we want a better Country,we need to have better people in politics. We need the corruption out. We need compassionate in and we need some folks with backbone that won't be buffaloed by a bullshit terror plot and a halfbaked vendetta.
We need someone willing to have these folks arrested when they win the election. I can tell you for sure there is only one person that would do that. ME!!!!

The poor man made a mistake he told us and he should be given the benefit of the doubt. That means letting him finish his term and leaving him alone. It isn't fair to doubt him like Senator McCain is right now. All Republicans show back him now and even nomininate him again for the next election round. This is the christian thing to do and would show that the Republicans trust the word of one their own. Then surely the voters of Idaho will reward this trust and honesty by reelecting Mr. Craig. Right?

I don't care that they are gay or otherwise sexual deviants. I care that they are hypocrites and stand fast for "defense of marriage," and other anti-gay legislation like the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" conundrum!

What if he is a sexual pervert, or whatever you may want to call him. Who cares? It is in the eye of the beholder. He is not hurting anyone.
The real pervert is the guy in the bathroom initiating an exchange, and then snitching in order to get browny points.
How disgusting all this is. Is this really relevant and important information?
Americans are so obsessed with sex and moral values, but don't give shit about having hundreds of thousands of innocent people in their name killed.
