Chertoff Is Just As Incompetent As Gonzales

Posted by Amanda Terkel at 10:30 AM on August 27, 2007.

Amanda Terkel: Chertoff's tenure at Homeland Security has led to frequent calls for his resignation, yet he appears to be the frontrunner to replace Gonzales as attorney general.

One of the most repeated criticisms of Attorney General Alberto Gonzales's tenure was that he continued to serve as Bush's lawyer, rather than the nation's lawyer. "He lacked independence, he lacked judgment, and he lacked the spine to say no to Karl Rove," said Senate Majority Harry Reid (D-NV) in a statment today.

The media are reporting that Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff is the frontrunner to replace Gonzales. Yet it's not clear that Chertoff will be any more independent or competent.

Most recently, Chertoff was criticized for claiming that he had a "gut feeling" the nation faced a heightened chance of a terrorist attack this summer. As head of the agency overseeing FEMA, he managed the administration's bungled response to Hurricane Katrina. He also faced bipartisan criticism for his agency's misallocation of terrorism funding.

This morning, CNN's legal analyst Jeff Toobin speculated that there are already "very good sign[s]" for Chertoff's nomination. But in the past, Chertoff's incompetence as DHS head has prompted bipartisan calls for his resignation:

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid: U.S. Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid called for the resignation of Homeland Security Department Secretary Michael Chertoff on Wednesday, one day after the government dropped Las Vegas from a list of cities considered potential high-risk targets eligible for special anti-terrorism grants. [Las Vegas Review-Journal, 1/5/06]

Rep. John Sweeney (R-NY): Rep. John Sweeney (R-N.Y.), a member of the House Appropriations Committee, warned that if the funding isn't fixed, "Chertoff should consider resigning." [New York Daily News, 6/2/06]

Former FEMA Director Michael Brown: Asked whether Chertoff should be dismissed, Brown said, "Well, I think so." He said FEMA had been "marginalized" by Chertoff and his predecessor, Tom Ridge, and that he had expected the agency's performance to suffer. [CNN, 3/3/06]

New York Times: "On Wednesday, an 11-member, all-Republican Congressional panel released a scathing report on the leadership failures before, during and after Katrina struck the Gulf Coast. While there is no shortage of incompetent public officials involved in this tragedy, one stands out above the rest. That person is Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff. ... It would be nice for the administration to finally send a message that if important people do a bad job, they go away." [2/17/06]

Rep. Sheila Jackson-Lee (D-TX): "Do you believe you should be fired because I believe you should." [House Homeland Security Committee hearing, 2/16/06]

Rep. William Jefferson (D-LA) and Charlie Melancon (D-LA): "What the majority report does not do, however, is draw the logical conclusion to its own findings and recommend Secretary Chertoff's removal from office. Our judgment, based on a careful review of the record, is that the Department of Homeland Security needs new and more experienced leadership." [Minority report by the House Select Bipartisan Committee to Investigate Katrina, [2/15/06]

As Salon's Glenn Greenwald notes, the "DOJ and the country desperately need a completely outside figure who will ensure that the prosecutorial machinery operates independently. ... That is not going to happen if the Democrats allow the confirmation of one of the ostensibly less corrupt and 'establishment-respected' members of the Bush circle -- Michael Chertoff or Fred Fielding or Paul Clement or some Bush

wasn't really trusted by Bush or his co-horts. He was very much like the stereotypical Mexican side-kick in old Western movies (like The Cisco Kid). He was just considered "our mexican" and there was a paternalistic attitude towards him by Bush I felt. Chertoff however is a very crafty individual with deep connections to nefarious elements and agendas. He truely believes in the police state and 'us vs them' rhetoric, whereas Gonzales was just more of a 'yes man'. Siiiii Senooor Bush. He'll probably get a job on Bush Family estancia in Paraguay as a translator to instruct their serfs. Chertoff, with his connections to militant Israel, and devious way is far more dangerous and should not be confirmed.

Clement has been temporarily appointed. I think Bush will meet with much resistance no matter who he tries to appoint. He's probably just a little nervous. He doesn't have the control he once had. He must know that. Thanks, ANNA

10 points for matching the photo of Chertoff with the correct "Strangers With Candy" quote:

(a) "Come on, pick me. Look, I have the legs of a mongoose."

(b) "I did things I wouldn't force on a mule, and that includes things I forced on a mule."

(c) "Historically, syphilis is right up there with Germans. It wiped out the Romanovs, it decimated our fleet at Pearl Harbor, and of course, Fidel Castro impersonated Marilyn Monroe and gave President Kennedy a case of syphilis so severe that eventually it blew the back of his head off."

Correct answer: Well, Karl Rove went back to Texas to check on the progress of Jeb's "ailment", so let's go with (c).

Do you really think we're going to see anyone other than the same incompetent cronies as long as the current cabal is in office? This is just another reason why it's time to impeach the men on top.

Or Chertoff is just a red herring to make us think that the real candidate is a compromise and perfectly acceptable. Some of the newscasts are suggesting Ted Olsen for that role. Let's keep our eye on the ball. That man is a convicted perjuror, and smart. Infinitely worse than Gonzales. What we need is a man who understands the game--like maybe John Dean.

How about John Roberts for AG and Ruth Bader Ginzberg for Chief Justice.... Can you ask a sitting justice to leave the court to take the post? I certainly hope so.

First we have Rove who has resigned, then we have Gonzo who has resigned, then I read Rove is being put up for Attorney General, and Chertoff for roves job.

I mean come on, is this musical chairs??? The reason these people needed to resign is they are crooks or dual citizen s of the US and Israel. Lets get rid of them all and stop this insanity. These people are like having the highest security prison inmates running the country. I can't stand it anymore. Next I expect to see SEnator Craig put up for Homeland Security, can you imagine???? All the bathroom rapists/seducers in one place right next to the pedophiles.

Holy toledo, what sick bunch of pithy psychos.

We know that Dubya can make an interim appointment and do an end-run around Congress. We know that he has pretty much given up on getting any more of his agenda passed. So, he could just pardon Scooter Libby and then appoint him as AG. Scooter does have a legal background, and he is probably looking for a high-paying government job.

The bar is set so low in Washington for Bush nominees, that they are probably going to nominate a cartoon character, Skelator, and he'll probably be rubber stamped by our wonderful Congress as better than nothing. How sad is that? We no longer look for the person who would do the best job, we look for the one whose nose is brown enough to get Congress to say 'Yeah, we'll take that one even though he's a bit past his sale date".

I whole heartedly agree with all of the criticisms of Chertoff. Bonzo Gonzo is NOT a lacky, he is a loyalist. He knows things about Bush that you with you knew. He will be protected at any cost.

If Jhertoff worked for me, he would have been fired the first time that he opened his mouth. He is totally responsible for all of the incompetence related to Katrina. He passed the buck on Brown the lacky, and Brown was sacrificed as opposed to a "loyalist" like Jhert off. But why not make the loyalist like Jherk off into the AG?

Simple, people are starting to think about the next election and repugnantcans everywhere are pretending to distance themselves from their fascist leader. Over the next year, fascist's will begin fading away through resignations, so not to detract from 3 wife Guy ugli aint he or Mormon Romney. The candidates will try to show a distinction between themselves and the Bush failures. They aren't any better. American's have very short memories. The right wing press won't remind anyone.

The correct choice isn't Jerk off but rather former Governor Frank Keating from Oklahoma. Why - because he's clean, he will say the right things to make you think that repugnantcans are good guys. He will help get repugnantcans elected and - racist white trash WILL re-elect fascist’s all over America.
