Family Research Council Equates Gay Marriage With Marrying a Corpse

Pam Spaulding: I'd love to hear the GOP candidates comment on this kind of rhetoric coming from one of its allies.

The Family Research Council, established by James Dobson and headed up by Gary Bauer until Tony Perkins took the helm, is one of those of "family values" conservative lobbying groups whose membership the GOP clown car candidates have been courting so desperately. Perkins and his organization is on speed-dial at the Bush White House.

FRC gets my quote of the day award for this gem....

In Rhode Island, a same-sex couple married in Massachusetts is seeking a divorce; because their marriage was not recognized in R.I., when they filed for divorce, it is now in the courts to decide whether it can be dissolved there.

FRC decided to weigh in on the matter by filing a brief to argue that the marriage cannot be recognized (even though there is no law in R.I. banning same-sex marriage), citing this unhinged thinking:

"Following the logic of the appellants and their supporters, man/animal marriage and man/deceased woman marriage must be permitted under Rhode Island law simply because the General Assembly has not expressly prohibited it."

Tony and Co., when you are able to explain how animals and corpses can grant consent to enter a union of any kind, please let us know.

I'd love to hear the GOP candidates comment on this kind of rhetoric coming from one of its allies in the fight to restore family values to this great nation.

Perkins, by the way, gets bonus family values points for having paid $82K to David DuKKKe for his mailing list.

When you don't even see homosexuals as being fully human to begin with... such comparisons are easy.

I defy these people to spend some time in The Village in New York or the Wrigley Field area of Chicago (yes, it's where the Cubs play) or most of San Francisco and maintain their hateful wrongheaded views of gay people. If they could then I would have to say that they are the lesser humans and I feel sorry that they are incapable of learning.

The General Assembly hasn't expressly forbidden animal marriage?

So why aren't more people married to their animals, then? By their logic, if it's allowed, then hordes of people will be "flocking" to do it.

Okay, it's a really bad pun, but I am weak and couldn't resist.

Is it a man/man marriage?

They said:

"Following the logic of the appellants and their supporters, man/animal marriage and man/deceased woman marriage must be permitted under Rhode Island law simply because the General Assembly has not expressly prohibited it."

Why did it not say:

"Following the logic of the appellants and their supporters, woman/animal marriage and woman/deceased man marriage must be permitted under Rhode Island law simply because the General Assembly has not expressly prohibited it."

?

Are they more freaked out by a MAN marrying someone/something other than a woman? Is it two men in this particular case who are seeking to divorce, or is it just another case of asinine family values groups having more of a problem with MALE gayness than female gayness?? Jesus says penis is bad bad bad!

This is the same argument that's been used for the last couple of decades - the slippery slope argument that if we allow THIS, then we won't be able to legislate against bestiality, etc., completely disregarding the issue of concent(although as Slate pointed out, human-animal is VERY hetero!).

However, although it's an old argument, I do appreciate being updated on who's making it currently, so thank you AlterNet!

Sounds reasonable, but incomplete. What about man/deceased man? Man/deceased animal? Man/deceased gay animal? Hermaphrodite/deceased neocon? Dominatrix/diapered Cheney? Rove's Dad/whatever bush is? . . . you get the picture. I mean, you can't be too careful. right?

Aren't these family value righties just the best!

WHO IN HELL GIVES THESE DUMB FUCKS THE MONOPOLY ON "FAMILY VALUES" IN THE FIRST GODDAMNED PLACE???!!!!

And what the fuck are "family values" anyway? We all have our own values, morals and ethics, and they CAN NOT be DICTATED by anyone, let alone some hypocritical bible thumping plebians who, after missionarily fucking their wives, pray for God's forgiveness.

Losing ones "Pre-Spouse"

I realize the sickos a FRC are talking about necrophilia - only they (the FRC) would come up with such perversions!! I lost my fiance 9 weeks ago to a heart attack (largely because he was uninsured, but that's another post)...I wish I could still become his "Mrs." if only as a "courtesy title" and I'm sure there are others who would like to become (at least in name only) who they thought they would be before losing a "pre-spouse"...it might make the pain a little easier to bear. So, you see FRC there are sentimental (and perhaps legitimate) reasons why someone might "want to marry a corpse."
