This post, written by Katrina vandel Heuvel, originally appeared on The Nation

On Meet the Press Sunday, Senator Russ Feingold announced that he will be introducing two censure resolutions in the next few days, aimed at holding President Bush, Vice-President Cheney and other administration officials responsible for the damage done to our country--weakening our security by misleading us into the disastrous war in Iraq and shredding our Constitution.

When Meet the Press host Tim Russert asked, "Isn't this futile?" (sounding every bit like the arbiter of inside-the-beltway realism that he is), Feingold spoke eloquently of the need to set the historical record straight. What message does it send, he asked, if elected representatives do not hold accountable a President and Vice-President who have used mistruths, spin, manipulated intelligence reports and fear to drag this country into a war that is the most colossal foreign policy mistake in our history? What message does it send if we do not hold them accountable for weakening our security through relentless assaults on the rule of law on which our country was founded?

History must therefore record, Feingold argued, that when faced with an administration which doesn't recognize or respect the separation of powers, which perpetually acts as if the executive branch is above the laws of our nation, the people and their elected officials stood up and demanded accountability.

While Feingold believes that Bush and Cheney have committed what our Founding Fathers would have thought of as "high crimes and misdemeanors," at this time he does not believe it is in the nation's best interest to put important issues confronting our country on the back burner to go through months of a divisive impeachment process. That is a view shared my many progressives.

At the same time, however, a growing majority of the country disagrees--in fact, a majority believe Cheney should be impeached. And many progressives as well as conservatives --including Bruce Fein, former Reagan Justice Department official--make a coherent and impassioned case for the value of pursuing the impeachment process. The case for impeachment was given the airtime it richly deserves in an extraordinary July 13 Bill Moyer's Journal, program featuring The Nation's John Nichols in conversation with Fein.

Feingold needs citizens' help to develop and push these resolutions forward. E-mail your representatives, bombard them with your appeals and demands that they stop this White House from shredding the Constitution and, as Feingold puts it, "thumbing their noses at the American people."

We deserve better.

Digg!

ABOUT THE CENSURE

It's a start. For whatever reason Bush and Co. are safe from everyone and everything. It's important to do something that works instead of nothing at all. If Feingold can make the censure work it increases the possibility of moving on from there. Right now it doesn't seem to matter what the people want. In all honestly "the people" have got to make themselves heard. That is not happening. So I'm with Feingold and Conyers. Thanks, ANNA

"Hell No!"

Trouble is, what would be enough? How do you give a nation back its dignity, how can you reclaim the losses this administration has brought about, how do you heal a gravely wounded world?

If this was anyone else... Well, they aren't just anyone else... They are the "Lord High Cockroach" and his lawless followers who have stolen not only our pride as a nation, but over-ruled most of the checks and balances in put in place to prevent these atrosities.

"How much is enough???"

At the moment I would settle for almost anything resembling "Justice".

As it takes effort to slow, stop and reverse the direction of a boulder, it takes time and much effort to change the Administration of our Democracy.
We need to keep our effort at a high level to purge our government of these crooks.
Sen. Feingold is just getting the boulder moving the other way.

Bush and Cheney need to be impeached and this may be the first step. Once the light is shone on the covert actions of this administration starting from the elections of 2000 and 2004, September 11th, Iraq and the P.R. campaign pushing faulty, coerced evidence, the use of military policies that outsource our military to private corporations operating under no regulations and clearly not loyal to the military objectives, and countless other allegations.

If they are innocent {ya right} than why do they resist exposing the truth?

How many other elected officials in on the deal?

There will never be enough. Impeachment isn't even enough.. A long jail term is barely enough. Perhaps Texas has the right idea. Put em both on death row. They have murdered thousands of our soldiers, innocent Iraqies, and citizens of New Orleans. This administration is composed of MURDERERS.

Impeachment is a Trial

``We need to do something serious in terms of accountability,'' Feingold said on NBC's ``Meet the Press'' program. ``This administration has assaulted the Constitution.' (From NYT) Does he then call for impeachment? No, he calls for a vote of censure. Why does Senator Feingold feel that the administration's assault on the Constitution is insufficient to call for an impeachment trial? He says Congress should censure the President not only for the illegal wiretapping program, but for the administration's phony reasons for going to war in Iraq, for trashing habeas corpus, for giving the green light to torture, and the list goes on and on. Just censure!!! (from an article on Raw Story)

Never accept the argument that votes need to be counted to estimate success prior to issuing articles of impeachment. Issuing articles of impeachment is the equivalent of a grand jury indicting -- charging someone with a serious crime. THEN the trial begins, with evidence given and witnesses called. Only when the trial is concluded is it time for each Senator to decide how to vote.

Senators take an oath to uphold the Constitution. Counting votes is not required in the Constitution. No prosecutions of criminal behavior would be initiated if prosecutors were required to count votes of a jury ahead of time. The Senate must assess the evidence before it and vote. If a Senator votes against conviction, even if faced with clear and compelling evidence beyond a reasonable doubt, then he/she has violated the oath of office. All this happens AFTER the trial. Impeachment is a call for that trial.

Feingold says on Raw Story: "I am proposing is a moderate course -- not tying up the Senate and the House with an impeachment trial …." I wish each Congressman and Senator who says this would state what they think they can accomplish while dealing with an obstructionist administration and a President who vetoes any significant legislation.

Senator Feingold says of Censure: "This is an opportunity for people to say let's at least reflect on the record the fact that something terrible has happened here. This administration has weakened America in a way that is frightful."

Senator, with all due respect, that is what an impeachment trial does in a much more thorough way with all the legal procedures used in any trial. Forget censure, and instead politically support Impeachment Articles to be drafted in the House. Start with VP Cheney-- partly to avoid war with Iran.

Feingold takes on Bush & Cheney. Hillary Clinton along with Bayh, Byrd and Webb have taken on the Pentagon. The Veterans are suing the Administration because no one gives a damn about them. Not to be crude but maybe when the doctors looked up Bush's ass they found his head. It wasn't in the newspapers. Thanks, ANNA

...should only be the last resort after a war crimes trial. After they are convicted and before executed, they should be water boarded.
