Michael Vick Is Really Sick

Dana Kennedy: No apology will suffice for NFL star Michael Vick, who's been indicted for participating in an illegal dog fighting ring.

This post, written by Dana Kennedy, originally appeared on The Huffington Post

After hearing about NFL quarterback Michael Vick's indictment in connection with a vicious dogfighting ring, I'm reminded how I take issue with many well-respected motivational speakers, past and present -- on at least one topic.

Meaning sometimes I find the idea of "forgiveness" -- when it involves people who commit heinous acts -- to be overrated.

Some of the usual suspects -- Wayne Dyer, Jesus Christ, Mahatma Gandhi, Dr. Phil etc. -- came to mind when I read about the dozens of pit bulls who were trained, tortured, tethered to car axles, starved, shot, electrocuted, drowned and subjected to something called a "rape stand" on property owned by Vick in Smithfield, Va. The dogfighting operation was sponsored by an outfit called "Badnewz Kennels." Vick comes from Newport News, Va. which he calls " a.k.a Badnews" on his website.

If Mike Vick and his three friends are found guilty of the crimes listed in the 19-page indictment -- including one incident where Vick allegedly decided a female pit bull who lost a fight should be killed and his friend "executed the dog by wetting the dog down with water and electrocuting the animal" -- should they also ultimately be forgiven?

I ask this not because I'm a big animal crusader. As Lance Armstrong might say, it's not about the dogs.

But when evil like this is exposed to the light, it raises the specter of evil in general and how it's an inescapable part of life. More for some people, and some animals, than others.

It reminds me of big evils like slavery and the Holocaust, and the small evils that happen every day. And yet in the end, how some of the world's greatest thinkers advocate forgiveness.

Vick, who The Washington Post today called "one of the NFL's most exciting players," so far has denied involvement in the crimes, saying he wasn't aware of what was going on at the property he owned.

But somebody did it. More than one person. And I wonder about them -- people who appear to be "normal," who walk among us, who are perhaps even worshipped and revered, yet blandly commit acts that would shock and repulse the average person. Whoever tortured these dogs -- what did they eat for breakfast the day the carpets got bloodied at the property in Smithfield? After they wet down the dog and electrocuted her, did they go get a Big Mac? Did they want fries with that? An apple pie?

Did they call their mother just to shoot the breeze after tethering a few dogs with a heavy chain to a car axle? Did they fall naturally into a relaxed slumber after an afternoon spent putting the dogs on a specially modified electric treadmill or forcing them to mate on the rape stand? Or did they take an Ambien?

Wayne Dyer likes to say, "in forgiveness, we find the power to free ourselves from the negativity others create."

Jesus got a lot of mileage out of this one: "Do not resist an evil person, if someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other side also." Dr. Phil made it his Life Law #9 (there are 10), proclaiming simply, "There is power in forgiveness."

They're probably right -- I'm just saying at times like these I've got a big problem with it.

George Dohrmann of SI.com points out that there is one line in Tuesday's indictment more likely to cause "rage" than any other: "In or about April of 2007, Peace, Phillips and Vick executed approximately eight dogs that did not perform well in 'testing' sessions at 1915 Moonlight Road by various methods, including hanging, drowning and slamming at least one dog's body to the ground." What would Mahatman Gandhi say? Probably this:

"When I despair, I remember that all through history the ways of truth and love have always won. There have been tyrants and murderers, and for a time they can seem invincible but in the end they always fall. Think of it -- always." Tell that to the dog who was murdered by being slammed to the ground -- or the one who was first wet, then electrocuted. Oops, it's too late. They're dead.

country such as the USA to claim that dog fights, cock fights, and other "blood sports" (to use your term) are wrong? Gee, I guess it is ok to put millions of people in jail subject to rape, fights, and abuse? Ok, to bomb countries and invade them? Ok, to eat meat, poultry, and fish? Yet, letting animals fight each other (which happens in nature by the way) is the biggest crime ever?!? Also, the not-so-subtle racism that accompanies the 'blood sport' ban (just because Hispanics and Blacks seem to like the sport.) Who are YOU to question the favourite passtime of "latin cultures" from Mexico, South America, and even Spain? How about being culturally sensitive and allowing immigrants to participate in their national passtimes-- just as you might play baseball with wood taken from trees and a ball made from leather (animal skin)!! Just because you are against it doesn't mean that Mexicans, or subcultures in America (cajuns, blacks, etc), can't have fun in their own way you racist.

We all know he will get a slap on the wrists... but Vick should be in jail for a LONG time over this. It is absolutely disgusting.

There is NO defense of dog or cock fighting. NONE.

...but this is really repulsive. If Vick is found guilty, let him spend some time playing quartrerback for the prison team.

The entire human race is pretty damn disgusting. Not every individual, but every culture.

Humans have overrun this damn planet -- there's billions of them, and they just keep multiplying.

Forgiveness

I think what Jesus and Ghandi, et al are referring to is forgiving those who have wronged us. It is a personal issue. That is understandable, that there is power in forgiveness.

However, forgiveness and justice are not mutually exclusive. You can forgive and then throw the book at these sadists. They are not like the rest of us. We as a society need to protect ourselves and the helpless, voiceless animals who live among us, from sick people like these. So whether you think you can or cannot forgive them, fine. Wrestle with that. However, collectively, let's recognize that these brutal human beings are a danger to us all and let's increase the penalties for fines and imprisonment to a level that accurately reflects that sadism toward animals will not be tolerated in society.

And Albrecht- you're all wrong about racism. What side of the bed did you get out of this morning? One of the most despicable blood sports is bull-fighting, which comes from a white society (Spain). My line of work has given me plenty of exposure to whites who support blood sports. Your argument makes no sense to me.

We live in a country where a fair trial is almost impossible. How can any jury be impartial with TV personalities, prosecutors, judges, lawyers, etc.. weighing in to earn a few dollars for their so-called expertise? Some laws have possibly been broken and some wrongs done, but to even compare this to slavery or the holocaust is a stretch. I would wait till the trial is over before I annouce judgment otherwise we poison the atmosphere with our speculations an intuitions. Now just suppose we gave the dogs some training and called them professionals, would that make it better? That's what we do to humans, ie. boxing, kickboxing, UFC, hockey, even fake fighting like wrestling. The only reason we don't have fights to the death in stadiums is because of laws, if there weren't laws against it we would be watching on pay perview. I'm perplexed we've caused the deaths of over a million Iraqis and Afghans with no end in sight. We are threatening to destroy thousands, if not millions of Iranians. We have the most prisoners on the planet. We know the prisons are filled with all kinds of brutality and torture, murder, beating, solitary confinement, and rapes. The government has approved enhanced interrogations (torture) for so-called terrorist. What is good for them is good for us, so expect a lot of confessions in police stations near you. I would just wait til the verdict is on on Michael Vick, then I'll talk about the dogs

I do not support dog fighting or cock fighting. However I realize that others do. Also, I would say that it is ridiculous to talk about putting people away for life for such a thing. Face it folks, we as humans like to see contests of strength and wills, ie Boxing, fencing, wrestling and Karate among others. With this in mind it should not be a surprise that we like to see other agressive species fight. Do I think it is right? I really don't know. Do I believe that everyone that fights Dogs or birds is evil and wants to kill them for even the slightest reason such as losing... NO! Think about it... If you have a champion dog or bird that you have invested much time and money into training, would you put it down just because it lost? That is almost like killing a boxer for losing, it makes no sense. How else does the competitor learn to win. What ever you may think of these people they are business people and with that in mind it is in their interest to make sure that their animals live as long as possible.
This sport is not my cup of tea but I think it is a stretch to put all of these people in the same bucket or to say that they should go to jail, aren't there enough reasons already for going to jail in this country already.

Vick is still "one of the NFL's most exciting players,"...of that, there is no doubt. Besides, in America's celebrated national game where vast sums of public monies are spent on the coliseums and the associated infrastructure in which to hold these contests, where nearly every game is sold out and watched religiously (they ARE held on Sunday!), and by millions more on national TV, that rewards aggression, hostility and physical violence, and secretly overlooks the use of performance enhancing drugs (nod-nod, wink-wink), and pays the players unheard-of fortunes, is there any wonder that Vick is an "animal"? What the fuck did you expect? That is like saying that you were surprised when Mike Tyson bit off Hollifield's ear.

BTW, have you been in a slaughter house lately? How about a feed lot or pig barn? If you eat meat, you are tacitly supporting the same behavior that occurred on Vick's property.

There is a lot of hypocracy in all this righteous indignation.

This is bad for sports, bad for African-Americans, bad for kids in general (my 12-year-old son refuses to take his poster down from his wall until he's convicted in a court of law), but worse for the dogs.

As a vegan, I agree -- this would serve as a great jumping-off point for bringing slaughterhouse practices before the public.

Why couldn't he have just been a sexaholic like another of the world's most gifted athletes, Alex Rodriguez? But no-o-o.

With a slap on the wrist. but he should ROT in prison. I don't know what VA's laws are, but here in CA a man went to prison for killing a neighbor's dog. If he were in CA, he'd be going to the clink for sure. I am so upset and shocked by this. And don't forget this guy is a spokesman for Nike -- the same company that 2 years ago ran an ad campaign making dog fighting look "cool." I wrote them and so did 100's of other people protesting the commercial, but they wouldn't remove it, and then claimed that no one had complained about it. Nike also uses child labor from overseas, FYI (Michael Moore interviewed the CEO a few years back in one of his movies). Pass it on - don't buy Nike and bug the hell out of the NFL to get this asshole thrown off the team. I suspect if he doesn't lose his job, he will be booed by 1000's at the first game of the season. One very cool thing I can say about this country is we love our pets! I work tirelessly trying to get homeless dogs into great homes, so seeing this sort of tragedy really gets to me. Dogs do so much for us: They guard our homes, they are awesome companions, they are entertaining and loving (FYI ESPECIALLY pit bulls, who adore people), herd our sheep, help the elderly and the blind, sniff out drugs, save lives by finding people under snow and collapsed buildings. In other words, they are useful members of society. They are LIVES. And they have emotions and feelings just like us, they are mammals too. Anyone not out and out enraged over this must have a screw loose.

I just want to say that I hope Michael Vick is kicked out of the NFL, sent to prison for a good long stretch. As a lifetime dog lover,I think this creature is disgusting. He deserves the harshest penalty he can get.

As for my little friend, what he would do to Vick can't be mentioned in polite company.....but it's even worse than what Lorena Bobbitt did to her husband.

I worked in psychiatric hospitals for many years. In doing intake histories one of the red flags for predicting future harm to others was whether the patient had a history of cruelty and murder of animals. I wonder how these men treat the women in their lives.
