One my favorite mental exercises is wondering how things would be different if say Black people had enslaved whites or women dominated men.

My friends often chide me because I've stretched this what-if-racial and gender paradigm to almost every facet of my personal life, arguing things like: my landlord wouldn't be such a pain if I were a white man and not a Black woman. Because clearly he thinks I can't fight back, you know, legally and strategically.

So it didn't surprise some of my friends when I called them up this week in a frenzy of conspiracy. The calls went like this:

"Oh, did you know the new Harry Potter movie is out and people lined up across the country to see its release at midnight," I said.

"I know!"

"See, I'm convinced though, that this Harry Potter craze is just us pandering to white culture. I know the movies are good and the books are page turners, but come one, if Harry Potter were Black, we wouldn't be having this conversation."

"You're probably right."

I called three friends on Wednesday, the day the movie Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix opened in theaters. I talked with all women. Here are their responses.

My good friend Dianna who doesn't miss a Potter movie or book said: "I love Harry Potter. I'd even date him." And this is the woman who's only dated men of color.

My friend Sheeba, a sociologist, said: "I was never interested in Potter. I like to stick to the real world."

Bukola, a marketing analyst and Anime fan, really got me thinking. She said: "But what if Harry Potter were gay too?"

"Then movie wouldn't be shown in theaters," I said.

ABC Family behind-the-scenes video of "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix."

We laughed about this and talked about why there aren't more fantasy writers of color. Because Potter, the genre, is fantasy. Although it conquers real emotional themes like love, curiosity, and revenge, it's about a white boy who's a wizard. And the series of books written by J.K. Rowling, a white woman, and their movies, have been translated into numerous languages. People all over the world champion Potter as a hero. Just watch the video. Potter is the Br'er Rabbit.

So questions remain, are we ready for a colored, gay hero or heroine who has magical powers? Or does our cultural ability to imagine a fantastical world for people of color and for gays run short?

Further, if Potter were a person of color and perhaps, gay, would millions of people around the world be watching him, and stowing away their fanaticism in Harry Potter clubs where they host Potter parties and pretend to be Potter and friends.

See I'm not sure yet. But one thing is for certain, if I were a white man, I wouldn't be sitting here on a Friday morning writing this.

Here, comedian Dave Chappelle evokes this what-if exercise and explores what if Bush were Black. Chappelle concludes a Black Bush wouldn't get away with the corruption Bush can because people would ask too many questions.

We laughed about this and talked about why there aren't more fantasy writers of color.

Celebrated authors Samuel R. Delany (a gay black man) and the late Octavia Butler (a black woman) come to mind, as well as any number of latino/a authors writing in the genre known as magical realism.

Also, "mainstream" fantasy like Harry Potter has its roots primarily in northern European legends and folklore. Does it make sense to remark on the lack of white authors writing about black characters practicing Vodoun? Sure, it's undoubtedly been done, but is it any surprise that the authors of various flavors of fantasy -- which already require a stretch of the imagination and a suspension of disbelief -- choose to remain largely within their comfort zones for the non-fantastical elements of their stories?

I do think or at least hope - ?? (heck of a thing to hope for) - that racism is gradually being displaced by the growing disparity between the haves and have nots when it comes to wealth and power. As a member of the priviledged white male oppressor majority, it's hard to really get into the role when you're being literally left in your home to die a very slow and painful death without any relevant medical attention.

I'm in my 13th year of a rare degenerative disorder. My white male credentials are doing me zero good - I don't see how this could be any worse - but something tells me that if I were a multimillionaire there just might be a way for me to get some help.

1. Voldemort, the bad guy, is very much white too (although we know nothing of his sexual preferences, if any). So are the Malfoys and all the Death Eaters.
2. Hermione is a woman, has magical powers and kicks ass. She is always regularly smarter than all the boys combined, and at least as brave as they are.
3. Ginny kicks ass too-at sports.
4. Most of Rowlings' narrative, especially in Order of Phoenix, blasts the establishment for manipulating the press, deceiving the public, making dubious moral choices based on their "being the good guys," and enforcing discrimination against non-human magical creatures and Muggles.
I agree that very little of this transpires from the movies. But let's not blame JK Rowlings for that. She's got the right values and she is doing more for kids than the whole media establishment combined. She teaches them to open their eyes and make critical assessment of authorities and figures in power. This is why so many religious conservatives hate her guts.
Folks: pick your fights. There is plenty of racism and sexism around. Leave Rowlings and Harry Potter alone.

Good grief - as if there isn't enough real racism out there already the author of this crap thinks a given fantasy author is a racist because they write about elves not black lesbians. This realy is pathetic. But just for the info:

Ged - Earthsea Trilogy Ursula K Leguin - Black
Spider - Anansi Boys, Neil gaiman - Black
The Marquis - Neverwhere, Neil Gaiman - Black
Maryam - A Noose of Light, Seamus Cullen - Arabic lesbian
Lucifer Box - The Vesuvius Club. Mark Gatiss - Gay
Captain Jack - Dr Who/Torchwood, BBC - Omnisexual
Martha Jones - Dr Who/Torchwood, BBC - Black
Shadow - Mary gentry Series, Laurel K Hamilton - Black

That's just off the top of my head. Fantasy and SF have always been at the forefront of this type of thing, remember Uhura, black bridge crew, first interracial kiss on TV, a Swahili name? OK she was a glorified secretary most of the time but hell that was better than any other images of black women at the time.

Expecting deep discourse on race and sexuality in a CHILDREN'S BOOK is not realistic, maybe the author should try more grown up fare. But then they might not realise that good authors can talk of the frictions between trolls and dwarfs but actually be referencing the real world (THUD - Terry Pratchett).

Im sorry to say, but I have seen fewer pointless pieces of drivel on Alternet than this piece.
For God's sake brush that chip of your shoulder and write a story yourself if you are so concerned.
How do you know by the way that people wouldnt accept a Gay or a black hero , how do you know until you try?
Stop braying on about it and do something, write!

Best part of this piece was the inclusion of Chappelle's bit. One thing I would have loved to have seen was an on-point relevant example of how Harry Potter would be dissed but for his whiteness. Not one piece of evidence deployed. Stoopid. Ruined the article until Chappelle's bit and it's sort of like saying, that guy ate an apple, there fore this apple in my hand is full of holes. Wow, solid logic, that...
