Santorum and Chertoff Hope America Gets Attacked This Year

Gavin McNett: The Right Wing has decided the only way to increase their wilting political fortunes right now is to insist that there's an imminent terrorist attack.

This story is making the rounds today:

Santorum Suggest New Terror Attacks Will Change View Of War

[...]

Santorum went on to clearly imply that terror attacks will occur inside America which will alter the body politic and lead to a reversal of the anti-war sentiment now dominating the country.

"Between now and November, a lot of things are going to happen, and I believe that by this time next year, the American public's going to have a very different view of this war, and it will be because, I think, of some unfortunate events, that like we're seeing unfold in the UK. But I think the American public's going to have a very different view," said the former senator from Pennsylvania.

That would really rescue the Republican Party's fortunes, wouldn't it? A little boomity-boom between here and November, and America will be terrified back into voting for conservative bunco artists like Rick Santorum.

One finds it hard not to wonder what Rick might know that a grand jury might later find interesting. Because here are 'unnamed officials' and Michael Chertoff plowing the same turf:

White House calls meeting on al Qaeda threat

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The White House has called an urgent multi-agency meeting for Thursday to discuss a potential new al Qaeda threat on U.S. soil, ABC News reported on Tuesday.

Top intelligence and law enforcement officials have been told to meet in the White House Situation Room to report on steps to minimize or counter the threat and what steps are being taken to tighten security at government buildings, ABC said.

The meeting would be one of a number that have been convened in light of new intelligence and information learned from the recent failed car bomb attempts in London, ABC reported, citing a senior U.S. administration official.

Is it that home-grown terrorists are usually total chumps? Incapable of building a car bomb and liable to resort to a desperate Plan B, such as crashing their car into a wall and setting themselves on fire? Because we knew that already. Eek-terror-plot. Eek-terror-plot. Eek-terror-plot. Eek-terror-plot. With enemies like these, who needs Mr. Bean?

The unnamed official told ABC the level of concern of a new attack in the United States was now higher than it had been in some time.

The White House had no immediate comment on the report.

[...]

ABC News cited senior U.S. intelligence officials as saying that new information suggests a small al Qaeda cell was on its way to the United States or may already be in the country.

Separately, U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff told the Chicago Tribune's editorial board his "gut feeling" is that the United States faces an increased risk of attack this summer.

Chertoff said his assessment was based on past patterns of terrorists in Europe, intelligence he did not disclose and recent al Qaeda statements, the Tribune reported.

If something happens between now and November '08, we can naturally expect a sustained shriek of 'we told you so' from the right-wing high-chair-thumpers, with immediate shrieky-hooting demands to shred the Constitution and surrender America into despotism, George W. Bush variety (i.e., 'tin-pot'). It's a mistake to note that these folks are always saying contradictory, illogical things, and to assume from it that they have no principles. They do. It's just too simple for us to see, much of the time.

Their constant claim, since roughly the end of Truman's last term, that America is engaged in an historic battle-of-wills against a powerful enemy, that the present emergency demands drastic measures, and so forth, is only a rationalization, a trick picked up from the exigencies of World War II, that sets them free to support 'drastic measures' -- which are what they're really attracted to. The organizing principle behind right-wing rhetoric is simple human spite: The political ideology of its rhetoricians is that somewhere in America, at all times, someone is stealing their parking spot or taking the last jelly donut, and someday there'll be hell to pay. Someday, as it were, a real rain will come and wash all the scum off the streets.

The Spite Caucus isn't particular about its methods. The more that 'liberals' revere, for instance, the Bill of Rights, the more they attack it under one pretense or another, but ultimately for that reason alone. It gives them the joy that a jerky twelve-year-old gets from jumping up and down on another kid's sand castle -- a Sandschloßspringenfreude. They support torture in part because it is torture, but also (and ultimately more importantly) because they imagine 'liberals' helplessly enraged by the manly drastic-methods that our enemies have regrettably forced us to use against them, through no fault of our own. If disaster follows, then disaster, after all, is what they were seeking. They thrive -- with intermingled outrage and glee -- on any chaos or tragedy that doesn't touch them personally. Their horror at 9-11 is identical with their exuberance at the leveling of Fallujah or the attack on Beirut.

But the point is that such people attract leaders who are either like them in spirit, or who know how to manipulate this most easily-manipulated of American constituencies. Because truly, the right-wing yellers may be the least of our troubles. If there's an emergency claim of executive power brewing (and here we have to ask: given what we know about this administration, where does the line of paranoia properly fall?), nobody will believe what's happening until the dust settles. And 9-11 has taught us that dust can take a passing long time to settle, as it were.

Not to mention that this provides fodder for conspiracy theorists to start screaming fits of nonsense, making the right wing seem rational and logical in comparison.

Just because many conspiracy theorists are kooks doesn't mean they aren't plotting against you, folks.

but who benefitted the most from 9/11? And who is benefitting the most from this war? I don't believe in coincidence, not with this crime family in the White House. Also why did only Democrats get anthrax? And why has it never been investigated?

This administration is totally evil, and will stoop to any level to acquire its ends. I just hope to live long enough to spit on GWB's grave-that is the only thing that would get me to Texas.

ABC News jumped in and carried all kinds of terrrist-plot-this and Michael-Chertoff's-guts-that on Tuesday. Then Reuters on Wednesday quotes the White House saying "...there was no specific, credible terrorism threat against the United States and denied that an emergency meeting had been called."

ABC News also said that while they had their hands on the DC Madam's phone records, they had no idea David Vitter was involved.

Cheney is under scrutiny and faces 'de-funding' for his branch. So he triggers an earthquake in Chertoff's guts and ABC News is right there to read the Richter Scale measurements.

Eyes wide shut, Disney. Threat Level: Cheney.

are these screaming right-wingnuts. If an 'incident' does occur sometime between now and November, my bet would be that it's either "allowed" to happen or is set up by our own gov't. I know. No one wants to hear that. Even now after it has become painfully clear this is a criminal administration with NO regard for democracy who will do anything to obtain their ends. As they already have. We may never be able to purge these ideologues from all the branches of gov't where they have been placed; much like enemy moles. Bush and his criminal cabal have done more to harm our once-great nation than any enemy ever could. And for years, the American public has simply stood by and watched. I often wonder if it is too late to save our country. I hope I am wrong and that what has always made America America - it's people - all of them - will finally arise as one and haul these criminals out of the WH and prosecute them for crimes against humanity as they so well and truly deserve.

And as for "gut feelings" - like Bush and Chertnoff proclaim for their insights - I prefer brains and rational thought and discussion in my 'leaders' any day over stubborness and ignorance and ideologies.

Hasn't Bush stated all along that the reason we're fighting them over there is so we won't be fighting them here??? Wouldn't another big terrorist attack shatter this reasoning?....Also, if there is another big attack comparable to 9-11...people are going to wonder about the competence of their government after spending umpteen trillions on defense and Homeland Security. People won't be so likely to believe the "out of clear blue sky" official US government type of theory that was given for the 9-11 attacks.

It's hard to look at his face and take him seriously. But I think we should be ask how he comes by all this wisdom. He shouldn't be allowed to just babble about something as serious as a terrorist attack. Shouldn't the CIA and the FBI demand to know why he is so well informed about such sensitive informaiton. What are his sources? He can't be allowed to come out of the woodwork and scare us half to death. Let him get a real job. Thanks, ANNA

We will undoubtedly see the invocation of National Security Presidential Directive-51 by George Bush. The seizure of civilian services by the Fed and the introduction of a national identification database will shortly follow. Dissidents will be silenced either through coerced submission to the state machine or indefinite detention. After a few months broad social engineering programs will be enacted. Biotechnology will play a key role in this. And then...well I mean...if it happens.

and that will make people support this idiotic war that wasn't about terrorism in the first place??? Not make them realize it really IS increasing the dangers we face???? Not make them realize that Bush and the Republicans really DIDN'T do what needed to be done to protect us as a nation???

We've been fighting their supposed war for 6 years now, and it sounds more and more like Republicans are rooting for the terrorists to further their own agenda and to gain power while they drag their feet on actually protecting us while following their own agenda in a useless and dangerous war in Iraq.

Tell me, Mr. Frothy Mix... what was it you Reps would have done that you DIDN'T do to protect us when you had the chance? Why did you waste our money and so so many lives going into a country that was not a hotbed of Al Queda activity? So they don't "follow us here"? How can they follow us from a place neither of us were at????

Also, lets make sure everyone understands the RACIST concept of fighting them there so they don't follow us here. We are taking a third party country... a noncombatant until we attacked them... to fight a war against an enemy that is not even present in that country. We are fighting them there so that only Iraqis.. only more little brown people who don't speak english will die... not oh so precious Americans. We know the war we choose to fight will have massive casualties.. but we'll be damned if those casualties will be Americans (read: white Americans).

The wool is so thick and so broad, even progressives and the left in general have failed to investigate 911, the very cornerstone-crime of neocon power and ascension to the Executive Branch, and the magnanimous military required to affect long wished for geo-political dreams with it.

Neocons are only able to continue their siege of the DOD, and its VITAL Black-Budget Ops thanks to a nationwide failure to investigate 911 (trust the government for that?). Exposing the Truth about this "crown jewel" of world wide war-mongering would expose the flagrant and murderous abuses of authority, budgets, laws, secrecies and media-mastered public manipulations that were required to support the imperialist's ongoing success.

"Sunshine" is the king-pin nemesis to everything these terrorist-militants wish to accomplish, and continues to be shunned even by those who wish to bring bushco down, or his Iraq War, or his torture, or his FISA abuse, or his AG/DOJ, etc., etc., etc.,. You keep wasting your time putting out all those distracting fires, while a relatively small number of researchers and investigators have done the dirty and courageous real work of uncovering and establishing irrefutable evidence, beyond any reasonable doubt, that 911 was in fact an inside job.

One of the biggest and most subtle consequences of this mass-ignorance, is that, deep inside most people feel a lack of control and accountability over their own government, that it's beyond our reach to do anything, because the first politically-controlled "investigation" "cleared everybody", so it must be those "terrorists" out there making us all uneasy and nervous. WRONG! We're all uneasy and nervous because the criminals who Miscarried Justice in the biggest way on 911 are still on their thrones and ready to pull more triggers... and we're looking the other way!

Perhaps when our internet is shut off by DHS, and there are oil/gas rations, and the paper-market really crumbles out from under us, it will occur to us that diligence directed at the first Crime would have saved our country.

when so many people think their own government is behind terrorist attacks on their own soil that killed thousands.

You would think that if the government gets that little trust from the people something would have been done by now. Of course, the 9/11 conspiracy nuts are a very small minority - like most conspiracy nuts.

I would say it is infinitely more likely that they allowed the attacks to happen than it is that they carried them out themselves. If a government is behind 9/11 it is much more likely to be Israel than it is to be the U.S.

Anyway, if you really think the U.S. government is capable of such a thing then you should have:

1. lost all faith in the system
2. stopped voting
3. started making plans to leave the country, renounce your citizenship, and become a citizen of a better country

That's the only logical path for someone that TRULY believes this "Bush blew up the towers" conspiracy crap. If you don't do these things then I guess you are willing to accept that sort of treatment by the government. THAT is more frightening than your theories - your acceptance of that reality and complacency.

A comedian I like once said that a lot of people "lost it" as a result of 9/11. And this is true: Falwell's vile remarks about who allowed the attacks to happen; dopey conspiracy theories; the Republicans' exploitation of 9/11 for their own agendas (which does NOT seem to include protecting Americans); impotent Democrats; and now this comical debate about threat assessment. At the risk of oversimplifying the issue, here's the bottom line, duly summarized in one sentence: Despite the Republican Party's shameless propensity for exploiting 9/11 and the "war on terror," a catastrophic terrorist attack on US soil is indeed imminent.

... a new terrorist attack is imminent. Our Government says so, and they should know -- inasmuch as they are the 'terrorists' who pulled off 9/11.

You can always tell who has had the guts to look at the evidence and who has not; the ones who look at the evidence (read the research that has been done by independent professionals) realize very rapidly it really was an inside job. It really doesn't take much to see it -- once one is willing to look. It was just another in a very long list of 'false-flag' operations.

The gutless will continue to stick their heads in the sand and their fingers in their ears, because if they DO see that it was an inside job, they will HAVE to make a major shift in their world-view -- and they unconsciously recognize that; and it is really terrifying to go through that process.

We know that Bush has ants in his pants over his desire to nuke Iran. So what kind of a 'terrorist attack' would they have to pull off to get Americans to agree and support it? Why, they would have to have a nuke attack right here at home! THAT will bring 'em back in line! Probably get a bunch of new recruits for the military, as well. Make the Republicans look relatively 'sane' again, just in time for next year's elections.

What will it take for the American people to recognize the sociopaths running the government for what they are? What will it take for them to educate themselves about the neocon agenda -- per their published documents, it's not secret -- and figure out what's next? What will it take for them to educate themselves about globalization and its crimes against humanity, and how these trumped-up wars fit into the picture? The information is all over the place, in books and on the Internet; if it weren't so tragic it would be funny.

But no, the ignorant will continue, against all reason and all evidence, to believe that this government is too good to do such terrible things. Right. They probably still believe in Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy, too.

The biological warfare started long ago. It's called agriculture. It seems in order to get back to square two (attacking Iran) another polarizing event such as Pearl Harbor, I mean 9/11 has to transpire. Even after such catastrophe does ensue, we can't say we weren't warned, as the perpe-traitors are already arranging the psyche for doom. It makes them look capable of determining our fate. Thus in control of our lives and government. Anyone who believes Bush could be remotely cabable of this plan should note the lack of his signature on PNAC. The next attack will bring to the US what the US has brought upon Iraq. Civil war, and as the house of cards falls so will our ally state Israel. All the brilliant minds that were wasted on plans for this destruction can never justify the means and therefore have no ground for success.

If anyone has been paying attention for the last 6 years (and I know you all have), I find it surprising that you would all feel that this is just more Republican hype to scare the American people. It is a tactic similar to the ones used by terrorists all the time - threaten, intimidate the target, and when they are lulled into ignoring you and your threats, then you attack. There will be heightened security through the rest of the summer, then not much will happen for several more months. Bush and Co. want the public to be lulled into a sense of security.

There will be a heating up of the presidential campaigning in early 2008 coupled with a false troop withdrawal from Iraq in March 2008. I call it false, because they will be sending troops back very quickly and surreptitiously, further depleting homeland protection. Then they will have the presidential nominating conventions where two equally objectionable candidates will be selected who represent more of the same.

We might even make it to Election Day and see the light at the end of the tunnel, but then, the "terrorist" attack - probably killing ten times what 9/11/01 did and timed for around Christmas to create the most sense of shock and designed to give the appearance of attacking Christian values. Then Bush will declare martial law, suspend the Constitution and disband Congress, put his private storm troopers take up the military obligations since all our troops are committed elsewhere, and you will see the start of the Armageddon, with us as the enemies.

The only thing that will occur that can stop this scenario is what Channing alluded to - a sleeping American public who are not as asleep as Bush thinks. The Japanese Admiral that oversaw Pearl Harbor was afraid that they had awoken a sleeping dragon - and he soon saw how right he had been. Bush would do well to listen to those words. Young people are beginning to understand the dangers, the elderly of this nation know. These were the same ones who fought for freedom from England over 200 years ago - the young and the old. They are waking up again, and they will need to ready with leaders who are committed to protecting the freedoms of our Constitution and our way of life. How many of the readers of this website are preparing to defend their homes and their communities? Start now, they need leaders who understand what needs to be done.

As for ATEO - we did vote and nothing changed. We do not leave because this is our nation and we will stay and fight for Her. We have lost faith in this government, but not in the guidelines for governance enshrined in our Constitution, our Declaration of Independence, and in our laws.

When a hunter corners a wild, rabid animal, the hunter must be prepared to kill that animal. Bush and Cheney and company are now the cornered animals, but they are not trapped. They are now the most dangerous kind of animal and they will fight to the death to achieve their agenda. They would even consider it a perverse sort of martyrdom for their cause, just like suicide bombers. And if their first victim is this nation and her people they do not care. WE THE PEOPLE must now become the hunters. We must be prepared to do whatever is necessary to stop this multi-headed rabid animal and we must be ready soon. The World is already loading its weapons to stop this animal, and they are only waiting to see if we do it first.

What is your decision, America?
