I love me some Grey's Anatomy, but Isaiah Washington sure has a talent for acting like an ass and then feeling sorry for himself.. He did an interview on Larry King Live to clarify his use of the word "faggot" during a fight with McDreamy. He says:

WASHINGTON: He got un -- became unhinged, face-to-face, spittle to spittle, in my face -- first. I did not start it. And I'm asking him why is he screaming at me, why are we doing this? Get out of my face. Several times. Several times. And he just becomes irate. But I'm not understanding why am I being berated to this point in front of our crew, particularly after what we experienced in Seattle. You know, I mean, I think you owe me on apology and I'm being berated.

And by that time I pushed him out of my face and it just took off from there and I began to say a lot of -- a lot of things that I'm not really proud of -- but all referring to myself and how I felt I was being treated.

KING: But how did the bad word come out of that?

WASHINGTON: Well, I said several bad words, as well as he did.

KING: To him?

WASHINGTON: To him about how I was feeling. I said there's no way you're going to treat me like a "B" word or a "P" word or the "F" word. You can't treat me this way in front of our crew.

KING: So you weren't referring to him as being an F person?

WASHINGTON: Never. Never. KING: Or anybody else being one?

WASHINGTON: Never, Larry.

Never, never, never, never,

KING: You said you can't treat me like a --

WASHINGTON: No.

KING: What was the word you used?

WASHINGTON: The "B" word was --

KING: All right. You don't want to --

WASHINGTON: -- indicative of maybe a four-legged dog --

KING: OK.

WASHINGTON: -- or a four-legged dog. And the "P" word would be more like punk, things like that. It's just that I felt at that point there was no place of return --

KING: And the "F" word meaning he was treating you like a gay person?

WASHINGTON: No. Just, in terms of the way I meant it is that any -- the "F" word to me, at that particular time, before this took off in this other direction, in terms of sexual orientation, it meant something -- it meant, to me, someone who is being weak --

KING: Oh.

WASHINGTON: -- a person who is not being treated -- is not deserving of respect.

KING: You weren't referring to any other cast member?

WASHINGTON: No, no, no.

Ahhh ok. So you weren't calling another cast member a faggot, you were just saying that faggots are weak and you are not weak. And you weren't referring to an actual "f-person" (as Larry put it) or anything! And you certainly aren't a bitch or a pussy -- words which you no doubt meant only as references to four-legged dogs* and kitty cats, and which is no way reflect misogyny any more than using the word "faggot" reflects homophobia.

Thanks to Christina for the link.

*Yeah, he apparently thinks that the term "bitch" is related to the numer of legs a canine is walking on. Read the transcript.

Someone should make Isaiah that story about the town idiot and the piece of string.

No one really cares, buddy, and the more you proclaim your innocence, the worse it gets.

I accidentally tuned in to the interview with Larry. Never watch Grey's Anatomy so had no idea who the guy was. But as the show progressed, I could see Larry squirming in his chair wishing he could shut the ass up. Body language tells all.

This is not news.

Idiot actor calls a costar a faggot, eventually gets fired. Sure, it might be the right thing to do.. but its not news.

WASHINGTON: I have a councilman who happens to be gay. I just met a congressman at Lee's house who is very gay, who wants me...

*italics are mine.

That one simple sentence gives him away.

Isaiah, your Freudian slip is showing.

Am I the only one who thought it utterly ludicrous that two grown men spent their time discussing use of the "b word," "f-person," etc.? Larry King is on cable, for gos darn sakes! They use words far more profane than that on every episode of The Sopranos. And "bitch," "faggot," and "pussy" are all routinely used on network television these days.

How can anyone have an informed, adult conversation when one must limit oneself to words appropriate to a three-year-old?!?

Isaiah's true colors are showing. His apology means NOTHING.

A lot of boys who are molested by other males turn out to be aggressively homophobic. The lead singer of "Korn" is one case.

What a pack of snide racist comments from mainly racist white women....

Were it not for the Black civil rights movement we wouldn't have white women millionaires playing docs on tv...would we....(or women of any color...check the cast of the 60s Dr. Kildare...the six women stars of GA would have all been nurses)
The article is replete with profanity
Posters call Washington an idiot...imply that he himself is 'gay'
The author calls him an ass
Somehow an 'N' word reference finds its way into the mouth of one of you racist white women posters...and so on. Yet it is
my prior sarcastic post (no profanity), calling this a meeting of the 'Knightettes of the Ku Klux Klan' that is deleted!!!!!!!!
Kinda ironic...seeing as how ALL of you including Filopovic are
like cockroaches feeding off of this race baiting issue....
And most of you feel absolutely free to post on Alternet articles that are about BLACK issues.
I wonder if the funders of Alternet think this kind of arrogant racist petulance is what Alternet is supposed to be about...
I made my post (the one deleted) as provocative as I did to make a point.. Hey..Don Hazen and Alternet censor...let's
arrange to 'discuss' this issue on a national forum...one where you aren't holding all the cards..
I know a lot of folk
who would find the debate ..fascinating....Maybe we can get the Dean of NYU law school to host/moderate... :O)

Why don't we all just take a deep breath and scream NIGGER!!!

Why not? After all, there is only one side to this "news" story anyway. Right? It is sad that this is where we as a society have come, or stayed? We have world shaking/ending problems with our leadership, the environment, the oceans, the arctic, world peace, peak oil, AIDS and so many other things yet we still have time to engage in such tired old pettiness as 'lets get the nigger'. Personally, I could care less about any of this, as I do not watch much TV. I do feel that this is pettiness no matter how you look at it. Do any of you know either of these actors? From the act of one person many here are floating the idea that blacks are more homophobic than any other americans, hmm... I ask all of you who are so sure of either side... how many of you really know any black or gay people? Not just at the office or in passing, but as close friends? People you care about or are related to? Then, how many of either category are in your group of close friends? Heck, throw in the many other groups that we have in america. I suspect that with most of you the numbers are nill or small if we use a search parameter including one or more groups of people. Perhaps I am wrong, but from the way many of you sound I get this impression.
What high standards are then people of Alternet upholding, in this or any other arena? All too many people would like to find fault in others while ignoring their own glaring faults, and that is killing our country. Don't forget that we are an Empire. That includes all of us, even those who claim they would choose otherwise.

So two guys get into a fight and one calls the other a faggot and somehow this is an issue.
The only way it's an issue is that now "you people" have an excuse for jumping on a public personality who "happens to be" black for saying something you don't consider PC. If he'd called the guy a MFA it sure wouldn't have made Larry King.

Why should I give a shit about what one soap opera actor says to another one?
The issue is that we feel free to excoriate each other publicly
FOR WORDS. That's violence. It may be PC, but it's violence.

What Would Lenny Do?

Let's get real

Does anyone think that the strategy of firing every single person who makes a regrettable statement has advanced the cause of equality or fairness in this nation? Who amongst us has never ever in their lives said something insensitive? Will we stop after we've all been fired for offending someone?

Liberalism used to be about achieving some real-world fairness for people. It was an idealistic movement that sought to get workers, children, the elderly, etc., some minimum standard of decency. It appealed to a broad spectrum of people because its programs actually helped people. Now we liberals have become the sensitivity czars and we've lost our constituency because we're not doing anything tangible to improve the human condition.

What difference does it make, in the end, if an actor has homophobic sentiments?

What are the ethics of representing something that is plainly NOT 'hate speech'

as such.....Typical Boyfriend/Girlfriend (Husband/wife) fight:
Let's make it interesting..He's Italian Catholic..she's Jewish :
"Leave me the fuck alone bitch..I have to think about this...
"Leave you alone...leave you alone...listen you wop MF ..I'll leave you alone forever"...blah..blah.. Sound familiar?..Oh,
you're gonna lie and say 'we' (bourgeois white couples) don't argue like that??...Hate speech..Yes or No .. is this Hate Speech? Words spoken in the heat of anger between friends, lovers ,enemies ,acquaintances in general, may be hurtful (as is the intention) and anger provoking..but that is NOT 'hate speech' ,especially when it is followed by effusive apology. When was the last time a neonazi aryan skin head 'apologized' for calling a black a nigger or a jew female a kike bitch???.
This doesn't make what Washington said 'a good thing' BUT neither is this exaggerated bullshit being pimped by Filipovic,
who should know better both as a journalist and as a law student.

WASHINGTON

JASMYME CANNICK: The Hypocrisy of White Gay America
Gays Can Protest Isaiah Washington, but Remain Silent on White Gay Man Who Performs Blackface Minstrel Show
(January 18, 2007)
[excerpt from People (online) 1/16/07]:
ABC has responded by saying that Washington's remarks on Globes night were "unacceptable and are being addressed."
"We have a long standing policy to create and maintain respectful workplaces for all our employees," the network said in a statement, as first reported on TVGuide.com. "We dealt with the original situation in October, and thought the issue resolved. Therefore, we are greatly dismayed that Mr. Washington chose to use such inappropriate language at the Golden Globes, language that he himself deemed 'unfortunate' in his previous public apology. We take this situation very seriously. His actions are unacceptable and are being addressed."
Is that so???...Oh Really.....
