Colin Powell was the kind of guy I'm supposed to like. Like myself, his roots are in Jamaica, he had an accomplished military career and when the Bush team was awarded the White House, he was supposed to be the sane moderating influence on the cabal of jackals. Instead, he carried water for the war in Iraq.

He never wavered from his support of the president's policy during the entire affair. He is now attempting to rewrite the historical record, but his supposed reluctance for war is nothing but cowardice. His British equivalent, Foreign Secretary Robin Cook had the intestinal fortitude to resign in protest of the war. Colin Powell was a silent, slithering snake of a man who cheerleaded one of the worst decisions in the history of the United States.

See this RAW STORY story for more:

Powell: 'I tried to avoid this war'

It was revealed today that prior to the Iraq war, then-Secretary of State Colin Powell spent two and a half hours trying in vain to convince President George W. Bush not to invade.

"I tried to avoid this war," Powell told the Aspen Ideas Festival in Colorado, reports Sarah Baxter in the Sunday Times. Powell said he walked Bush through the risks of becoming an occupying force in an Arab country.

The sectarian violence in Iraq has escalated to the point of civil war, said Powell, and one that US forces cannot resolve.

Baxter points to plans being drawn up by Defense Secretary Robert Gates to begin a slow troop reduction to pre-"surge" levels as signs that "the views of Powell and other critics of the war are finally being heard in the Pentagon, if not yet in the White House."

Powell also asserts that any reduction in US troops must be accompanied by diplomatic measures with Syria and Iran, writes Baxter.

However, Powell may have a hard time convincing the anti-war public of his message.

"It's really too late for Mr. Powell to redeem his reputation now," comments Kevin Robbins of New York, on the Sunday Times web site. "He could have resigned and gone public at the time rather than signing on to the whole fiasco."

While "Fernandez" from San Francisco sarcastically jibes, "A whopping 2.5 hours. Wow."

Excerpts follow:

#

Speculation is growing that Gates will demonstrate his commitment to withdrawing US forces by moving a combat brigade of up to 3,000 troops out of Iraq as early as October and continuing to reduce their numbers month by month from their current strength of 160,000 to presurge levels of around 130,000 by the summer of 2008.

...

A senior defence source said it would be possible to reduce the number of American forces to roughly 50,000-70,000 by election day in November 2008. "You are going to have to have some people left behind to provide stability and security for the country and take on the terrorists," the source said.

...

The general and former joint chiefs of staff added: "Shi'ites will ultimately prevail because they are 60% of the population and their militias can be pretty violent. They will prevail also because they are determined not to be ruled again by the Sunnis.

"The Sunnis are struggling for power and survival and it's going to be resolved by a test of arms. It's going to be very ugly."

Will Gen. Jim Jones Be Obama's National Security Advisor?
Although not as bad as keeping Gates as Secretary of Defense it would still be a very disappointing selection.

Obama's (Rumored) Pick for Secretary of the Treasury Makes Wall Street Happy
He's going to be the Secretary of the Treasury in the midst of a financial crisis, so it's probably worth taking the time to get to know him.

SCREW THAT GUY!

I have nothing but contempt for that man. He is as culpable as the rest of those vile zombie-vampires for this illegal war of aggression that has cost the lives of half a million people and our standing in the international community.

He can say what he wants, he is as much a criminal as the rest.

I had respect and admiration for Powell after watching his career accomplishments and reading his autobiography. I became thoroughly disheartened and disgusted when he hitched his wagon to the Bush cabal and remained loyally silent.

Now he continually speaks out to try to salvage his reputation, but it is much too late for more that 3500 American combat deaths, the untold related "non-combat" deaths, the tens of thousands of mentally and physically wounded, and the hundreds of thousands of Iraqi dead and wounded.

He should follow in the words and footsteps of Douglas MacArthur and just fade away.

And speak out - not go to the UN and give a speech he knew so full of lies that he demanded that George "slam dunk" Tenant sit right behind him to provide credibility and deniability. (Who knew?)

Many General Officers has courageously done exactly that. These self-serving statements of Powell reflect only his CYA mentality, a futile attempt to salvage the tatters of his reputation and the forlorn hope that his political aspirations are still viable.

...and in trying to cover his backside by restating historical fact, he shows that he truly is full of fecal matter.

Harry Belafonte referred to Colin Powell in a rather derogatory fashion a while back, and if you look at Powell's record of being a toady to the likes of the Bush Dynasty, the term, however unpleasant, fits.

Colin Powell-Career Political Suck-up

Colin Powell has made a career out of being a suck-up to authority to get ahead in his career.

From burying atrocities in Vietnam, participation in Iran-Contra and Iraq, he is little more than a person who is willing to trade his supposed 'morals' for opportunism at a moments notice.

His speech in front of the Republican convention is a perfect example. He espouses on numerous issues that were the exact opposite of the Republican platform, but continues to be a good, loyal soldier as long as it is good for his career.

Colin Powell is America's biggest token for hire.

PAINFULLY PISS POOR PATRIOTISM

Daniel Elsberg has been begging for whistle-blowers in this current polluted administration to emerge and spill their dirty little secrets. He still feels the sting of not having spoken up immediately upon his learning of the corruption simmering in the Nixon white house. He did step up, leaking the Pentagon Papers, and he certainly is a hero of that era, but he waited, keeping secret his knowledge while devastating events were unfolding for America. It still haunts him. I believe Colin Powell was in a much stronger position than was Elsberg, being a decorated general with all those shiny medals to prove his mettle. So, now he speaks. Now, after we buried thousands of innocents, tarnished our reputation to where we are ridiculed for our warped concept of promoting our kind of democracy by brutalizing Muslims, Arabs and Persians in a bullshit 'axis of evil', now we hear his manly excuses? Please. He not only cudda been a contender- he was! A most formidible one, clammored for by both parties. In the day. The day has long receded into the chaos he abetted by his 'diplomatic' silence. Let him write another memoir, spill his gangerous guts, spiff up his tussled image in creative ways his advisors arrange for his updated public presentation. You can't rewrite history, tho this bunch of hypocritical liars sure do give it their best shot. No one will ever mistake him for a patriot. Too much blood covers him. Too much mendacity that he was privy to went unquestioned, not exposed at the crucial moment when his voice could have the impact to change our calamatous course. His whistle is just as corroded as his honor and he can blow it till the cows come home. It's way too late!

DROP DEAD Colin Powell as dead as all the soldiers and Iraqi civilians you helped serve up. Your ambition out stripped your moral courage. If you had resigned instead of mixing the kool aide. Think how much human suffering you could have prevented ,if you had stuck to your guns . I doubt even the die hards would have got a way with this debacle. You can never un-ring the bell ,you traitor. A traitor to the military men and women you had command not so long ago. and all the innocent children that have died. Crawl back in a hole and stay there until you die.

A slimeback. He should crawl away and hide in shame, forever. What a hypocrite. He learned to be a liar, like the rest of the Bush Gang, who are profiting from their lies.
How disgusting they all are.
