Employing a tone that implies reporting on a fast-breaking scandal, the Los Angeles Times breathlessly tells us today that filmmaker Michael Moore will - gasp! - make a lot of money on his movie Sicko if it is successful.

Here's the excerpt:

"Moore himself stands to make a mint on the film. Thanks to a lucrative contract negotiated with the Weinstein Co. by his talent agent, Endeavor's Ari Emanuel, Moore is in line to receive 50% of "Sicko's" gross profits — arguably one of the most lucrative deals on Hollywood's books, richer even than those enjoyed by the likes of Tom Cruise, Julia Roberts and director Peter Jackson. After theater owners have taken their cut, in other words, "Sicko's" profits will be split in half between Moore and Harvey and Bob Weinstein, whose Weinstein Co. is releasing the film nationally today. And that's not the only place Moore's deal eclipses almost all other movie deals. While most actors and directors get a cut calculated on 20% of a film's DVD revenue, Moore's cut of those earnings is calculated based on all of the DVD proceeds."

The horror, really. How dare a documentary filmmaker make money on movies about issues that the political Establishment doesn't want to talk about? How dare he deny corporate Hollywood an outsized share of the profits of his work? And how dare he engage in such shrewd business tactics as to make sure he a larger economic slice of his work than famous actors like Tom Cruise? Who does this guy think he is? Didn't he get the memo that its some sort of scandal for progressives to actually make money while championing their cause?

I hope you can sense the snark here. The fact is, there's nothing wrong with doing good and doing well, even though the media (think the pandemonium over John Edwards' and Al Gore's houses) and some in progressive circles seem to think there is a conflict there - I know, because I've felt it myself every now and then (as I expect many other progressive writers have) from some who say I'm committing some sort of moral atrocity in - the horror! - writing books about progressive politics and then promoting them for sale so that I can make a living.

Sure, there is nobility in the "struggling artist" meme, but that doesn't mean that anyone in the progressive movement should aspire to struggle, or be bitterly angry at those who have found a to simultaneously fuel the movement while not having to economically struggle. In fact, I'd say its the opposite - we need as many people as possible pioneering ways to do good for the progressive movement in an economically viable way, and we need as many people aggressively promoting their work for the progressive movement in a media environment decidedly tilted against us.

The more people who can pioneer their own way to make a solid living - or better than just a solid living - doing progressive politics, the stronger our movement will be. This is why I happily blog at Working Assets - a company built on doing good and doing well. It is also why I happily promote our great progressive champions, whether they be politicians like Sherrod Brown and Bernie Sanders, writers like Glenn Greenwald, or other filmmakers like Robert Greenwald - because the better they do, the better our message is amplified and the better our movement does as a whole.

Michael Moore is about as good an example as you can find in progressive politics of someone blazing their own path and making a very good living - all while championing some of the toughest issues of economic power that even some parts of the progressive movement have been too afraid to touch. Congratulations, Michael - you done good and you done even more well than other celebs, and there ain't no shame in that.

Although not as bad as keeping Gates as Secretary of Defense it would still be a very disappointing selection.

This is a good thing really. The more money Micheal has, the more money he'll be able to donate to Liberal causes.

What Moore will do with lots of money

So if Moore makes millions, what will he do with the money? He appears to be a good, true progressive dedicated to improving the nation and the world, to reduce suffering, and to help those in need. It seems very likely that him having lots of money will result in his *next* progressive documentary happening sooner, with a bigger, better release. I trust Moore to continue following his quest to improve society. I look forward to the post-SiCKO film. I just spent $9 on SiCKO, as did each of the other nine friends with whom I attended. I hope he gets at least half my money as an investment in the movement SiCKO launches and to help bring forth the next Moore film.

...we see someone arguing on behalf of corporations. If Michael Moore did not take 50% of the gross profit (and 100% of the dvd), where do you think it would go? I'll tell you, to corporations and corporate executives whose contribution was to "green light" the film.

I prefer the profits going to the person who actually did the creative work, whoever they are.

No surprises anymore in the L.A. Times.

It is hilarious when editorial comments are so out of touch as to be unable to recognize an honest living when they see one. Robbing the rich and giving to the poor used to be a romantic theme. Under the GOP, it's become scandalous.

I confess. When bored, I will take a peek at the Times editorials--nearly always to come away depressed. I've lived in LA metro for the last 36 years. I used to tell myself that I hung around because I enjoyed having a good newspaper. Those good ol' days are long gone since the Chicago Tribune (whom I was glad to move away from) invaded.

Since a man is known by his enemies as well as by his friends, chalk up another for Moore. I've even given up writing my informed criticism and sending it to the LA Times. They suck. Moore rocks.

I hope Moore makes a mint off this movie and the next and then the next. How much money has Dick Cheney earned from his Haliburton's blind trust? How much did Frist make off the sale of the HMO his family owned? How much money has the Saudis put int the Bush war chest to date? Mike's money does not stem from the deaths of innocents and may in the long run save thousands from senseless deaths for want of a procedure. Moore has shinned a spot light on the inherent flaws of privatization of a necessity of life== Health care. Like all neocons' programs the only people who profit are the ones in charge . So make that money Michael Moore and do with it what you will ,just like the other rich folks. Hell buy yourself a yacht and sail around the world with your family. Enjoy!!!! You got yours the honest way. I do not believe Michael Moore ever planned on being rich but it must feel good.

Good for Michael Moore! I hope he takes good care of his own health because we need people like him around for years to come! I admire his courage in the face of incredible criticism and scathing comments from those in the media who speak for those who don't give a damn about the people they are supposed to represent and who are threatened by his willingness to take on the challenge of exposing that which desperately needs the light of day. God bless Michael Moore! He speaks for those whose voices are rarely heard!

It was written to stimulate in the reader the idea and the lie that Michael Moore does not make movies with sincerity of purpose, deep conviction or honesty, but merely to make a buck.

It takes one to know one, LA Times!!!!!

I think you've just outted yourself, and although we already knew, you confirm it daily.

Surprise: Big Media Doesn't Like Michael Moore.

Many Big Media hacks hate Michael Moore. The Big Media mega-corporations view Moore’s phenomenal success largely outside the New York/Hollywood motion picture and television studio/star system as a threat to their income streams and their ability to manipulate hugely lucrative markets. Moore has been taking flak from Big Media hacks, hatchet-men (and -women) and apologists for years, after they first sought, unsuccessfully, to ignore him and his work. As usual the only thing the media really wants to focus on when examining Michael Moore is Michael Moore. His weight, his politics, his anything except the actual doc. That is cynically out of the question because his work is propaganda and cannot be examined without hearing the so called other side of the debate. No work by Michael Moore can be studied except through the traditional media filters that demand you wear special goggles that protect the viewer from the horrible mind altering effects of such liberal bias. Once enough fog is present that the chances for spotting the Loch Ness Monster are the same as objectivly watching Sicko then alls fair. Thus since Michael Moore makes a lot of money off Sicko clearly he is a hypocrite. All true Americans should understand that.

True Progressives Love Michael Moore

The LA Times story, as excerpted here, could have been written by Rupert Murdoch himself, let alone any other "jealous" journalist over the much earned success of Moore's terrific movie that speaks truth to power over the growing numbers of middle class Americans who are being kicked to the curb by the bipartisan "Big Money People" or elite.

Just as "Hostile Takeover" questioned and exposed the agenda of corporate welfare, Michael's Moore's SiCKO blows the lid off that same $$$ pool of insurance, big pharma and financial sharks who find each other and float together up the economic food chain -- locked onto each other like catfish in the memepool...doin' the bump!

Michael Moore deserves all the public adulatation and economic rewards he is receiving as his documentaries selflessly expose the greedy corporate agenda with its ties to self-serving politicans. To compare Moore to politicians who are on boards of corporations with lobbyist ties to trade in excess of 45 M million of our educated citizens as commodities for cheap foreign labor and who uphold the "Great Labor Shortage and Education Myths" would be an erroneous comparison, at best.

Any anti-corporate welfare author or documentary filmmaker who advocates FOR the welfare of Americans, not against them, is where the true heart and message of the uncorrupted progressive movement lies.

But for those who don't believe that 'corruption happens', why, no better book than 'Hostile Takeover' to serve as a refresher. Can't wait for that sequel! Who knows who/what corruption it will expose and how much it will unite the true progessives.

Until then, check out http://noslaves.com
