Liberalism is So Hot Right Now

Posted by Guest Blogger at 5:49 AM on June 28, 2007.

Jill Filipovic: From the subpoena of Cheney's office to a new poll showing progressive values widely embraced by young people, there's a lot to be excited about right now if you're a liberal.

Just one of many reasons to be in a good mood right now.

After all the depressing stories yesterday, I bring you good news:

-Young Americans are leaning left. Forty-four percent support marriage equality. Twenty-eight percent describe themselves as liberal. Sixty-two percent support a government-sponsored healthcare program. Seventy-five percent of them are generally pro-choice, even though about half of that 75 percent favor greater restrictions.

By a 52 to 36 majority, young Americans say that Democrats, rather than Republicans, come closer to sharing their moral values, while 58 percent said they had a favorable view of the Democratic Party, and 38 percent said they had a favorable view of Republicans.

We're also optimistic, even about the Iraq quagmire. I think that's a good thing, provided that optimism helps to positively influence reality.

-High school seniors who were honored by President Bush for their academic accomplishments handed him a letter urging him to end torture. Awesome. Thanks to Elizabeth for the link.

-Feminist artists have created The Feminist Art Project, and it looks pretty awesome. Their work will be all over the country -- see if there's an event near you. Thanks to Roy for the link.

-Cheney's office and the White House have been subpoenaed. Yeehaw! Thanks to Louise for the link.

-And there's a new Die Hard movie coming out. Sweet.

You all have sufficiently cheered me up. Gracias.

TO BE ANY PART OF THE REPUGLICAN PARTY MEANS LITTLE OR NOTHING FOR THE AMERICAN PEOPLE.! TO BE A REPUGLICAN IS TO BE SATURATED WITH COULTER, LIMBAUGH, ROBERTSON AND THE REST OF THEIR ILK. AND MANY OF THEM HAVE THE PURE GALL TO CALL THEMSELVES CHRISTIAN. OF COURSE, GEORGE W. BUSH IDENTIFIES HIMSELF WITH THIS CATEGORTY. HE AND HIS SICK CHRISTIANS HAVE MADE A WORD LIKE "EVANGELICALS" A DIRTY WORD. THEY THRIVE ON DISTORTIONS AND LIES FROM FOX NEWS. THEY NOT ONLY ARE DESTRUCTIVE TO AMERICA; EVENTUALLY THEY HURT THEMSELVES.

So Is Civil Libertarianism

I have been noticing how many people are also supporting libertarianism. Of course this is just perception on my part, I wonder if there have been any studies. As for me, I no longer call myself "liberal." While I support many of the causes on the "left" I don't agree with all of them. While I generally despise conservatives, I am not going to automatically disagree with something just because they say it. No one has all the answers. I am encouraged when people say they are independent and think for themselves!

So, cheney/bush have been subpoenaed. They'll merely slap us in the face with their "Executive Privilige", and continue on their merry way, unless Congress does its job and IMPEACHES the bastards. Want to bet your paycheck on that one?

No mention of the source of your data was mentioned. Any time you quote polling statistics, you should include which pollster did the polling.

yes - these labels everyone is so quick to hide behind - what is really happening is common sense and humanity is prevaling in your youth - lets hope they don't suffer the same burn out as others as they 'grow' up - Youth have always been able to see through the crap of hypocisy adults seems to be blind to - but what really amazes me is how yet another kill kill kill movie claims equal attention - in a culture that hates and a culture that sees nothing wrong with kill kill kill games and movies and sees little to NO connection between it and the reality of illegal invasions and 1 million dead and tourtered people in less than 4 yrs its no wonder your youth are appaled enough to dig deep and reclaim some humanity its really called - common sense

Persistent conflation

That is, "democrats" and "liberals". I'm a liberal, and while I'm closer to the democrats than the republicans, I'm light years away from the DLC democrats. This is a constant source of irritation for me, especially among left-leaning media types who should know better (I expect it from the con jobs.) One understandable reason for it is that we have a two party political syste, so everything slides down to one side or the other - but this is also the true danger in persisting with the conflation, because we desperately need a multiparty system and we can't seem to break the mold.

Also, it's not a war, it's an occupation. Off topic, I know, but I try to say it everywhere I go.
