Jimmy Carter Calls Bush Policy on Palestine "Criminal"

Fox News: 'McCain's TV Commercials Contain ... Out-Right Lies'

This post, written by Dr. Bruce Prescott, originally appeared on Mainstream Baptist

In a scathing denunciation of the Bush administration's foreign policy toward Palestine, former President Carter labeled it "criminal" at an NGO conference on Human Rights in Dublin. Here's a quote:

Carter, a Nobel Peace Prize winner who was addressing a human rights conference in Ireland, also said the Bush administration's refusal to accept Hamas' 2006 election victory was "criminal."

Carter said Hamas, besides winning a fair and democratic mandate that should have entitled it to lead the Palestinian government, had proven itself to be far more organized in its political and military showdowns with Abbas' moderate Fatah movement.

The Islamic world has clearly exposed the foreign policy of the most powerful "Christian nation" in the world as nothing more than the law of the jungle -- "might make right." America preaches democracy, but we practice "social darwinism."

In the eyes of the non-Christian world, nothing could discredit both democracy and Christianity more than an American President who launches pre-emptive wars under false pretenses, authorizes the secret rendition and torture of prisoners, and then lectures the world about the virtues of both faith and democracy. And nothing could discredit the Church more than the fact that this President can still boast that his most loyal support comes from the ranks of the most publicly fervent and vocal proponents of the Christian faith.

I realize that most American Christians could care less what the world's non-Christians think. We are too busy shopping to support the President's "war on terror" and we are much too pious to actually tell unbelievers "Go to Hell!"

We don't need to -- our actions speak louder than any words. Non-Christians get the message. I'm sure God does too.

I'm also sure that God knows perfectly well who will deserve damnation.

Sarah Palin is a milestone, for we achieve true gender equality when an incompetent woman goes as far as an incompetent man.

"In the eyes of the non-Christian world, nothing could discredit both democracy and Christianity more..."

Why are we worried about Christianity being discredited? That happened so long ago. Thinking in terms of religion when the problem is partly based on religious fundamentalism in another country seems absurd. We should be thinking in secular terms.

And this is a clear contradiction here:

"The Islamic world has clearly exposed the foreign policy of the most powerful "Christian nation" in the world as nothing more than the law of the jungle -- "might make right." America preaches democracy, but we practice "social darwinism."

OK, so WE practice Social Darwinism, which I won't argue with much, since our foreign policies have been terrible for ages. But, its funny to hear this when Carter, himself, says the following:

"Carter said Hamas, besides winning a fair and democratic mandate that should have entitled it to lead the Palestinian government, had proven itself to be far more organized in its political and military showdowns with Abbas' moderate Fatah movement."

OK, so a body of people who declare that they want to exterminate all of Israel should be given respect because they're the best organized politically and militarially? Under that reasoning we should have supported Hitler, shouldn't we have? To support Hamas because they show strength is the very definition of Social Darwinism.

Presidency in desperate struggle to reclaim his legacy and revise history. After destabilising the Shah (not a great guy by the way) Carter, refused to listen to the State Dept, and instead listen to his henchman Brezeznski (sp) and refused to have dialogue with Khomeni when he was in exile in Paris. Instead the genius Carter forced the Iranian military to continue support for the Shah's chosen government successor(which upon Khomeni's return to Iran quickly collapsed.) He was too busy working on his very successful (yeah right) Isreal-Palestinian peace plan at the time to worry about Iran! Or maybe he was pre-occupied with giving away the Panama Canal to worry about the chaotic situation in Isreal and Iran he was helping to foment, which is, of course, what Brezinzki and others (like Kissingers, Bush Sr, Baker III, and neo-cons) want-- up to this day. One wonders if he was aware of their goals or was just too simple-minded to see the orchestration which took place under his command.

Misunderstanding religion

It is very important to not confuse the exploitation of religion by government, Bush administration, political TV preachers like Falwell/Dobson/Moon/Robertson with longstanding hororable Christian pacifists like Mennonites and other anabaptists, Quakers and present day Presbyterians, Church of Christ and even Southern Baptist (during the Contra/Witness for Peace days before overthrow by fascist insiders). Of course, even Hitler used the church to obfuscate his subversion of humanity, but it is a world of individuals who either have a Christian ethic or a counterfeit one; or the many who are simply inconsistent. Who among us is always consistent can cast the first stone.

It is bound to be much more constructive to challenge the organized churches to declare pacifism as the doctrine of Jesus now that they have become so disillusioned with wordly 'democracy'.

It is bigotry to categorically say that religion is warlike. Jimmy Carter, for example, is an honorable peace worker and a Southern Baptist. Carter can be the poster child of a much needed Christian church repentance and return to the spirit of Christ and repudiation of the OT 'eye for an eye'. Read Matthew Ch. 5-8 for the world's most radical socialistic pacifistic and humanitarian rant. Bear in mind that he was speaking in territory brutally occupied by the hated Romans.
