The Whore-ifying Impact of Media Misogyny

Lucinda Marshall: We will probably never know if Katie Couric is a creditable news anchor because she is attempting to survive in an atmosphere where the white male powers that be in newsrooms everywhere consistently sensationalize the news.

Fox News: 'McCain's TV Commercials Contain ... Out-Right Lies'
Steve Benen Washington Monthly

This post, written by Lucinda Marshall, originally appeared on the Feminist Peace Network

In an unfortunate recent interview, former CBS news anchor Dan Rather offered his take on why CBS news has taken a plunge in the ratings, opining that, "(T)he mistake was to try to bring the 'Today' ethos to the evening news and to dumb it down, tart it up in hopes of attracting a younger audience."

No mention of Charles Gibson's past on Good Morning America and of course Rather stipulates that he has the highest regard for Katie Couric. Uh huh. As columnist Ann Althouse pointedly asks,

"1. Is Rather insinuating that having a female newscaster is part of the process of "tarting up" the news? I know he doesn't precisely make that connection, but, to me, it's just glaring that the word "tart" means prostitute.

2. Why on earth does it matter what time the news is on? If something is wrong for the evening news, why isn't it just as wrong for the morning news? I think what is unstated is that only women are watching those morning shows, so the standards are lower."

It is worth remembering that when Couric was hired, there was all this hoopla about her credentials and America being ready for a woman news anchor. And now CBS' Les Moonves says that numbers show that just a few months later we're not? Oh and by the way, let's also not forget that CBS's numbers were already in the toilet when Couric took over the evening news slot.

We will probably never know if Katie Couric is a creditable news anchor because she is attempting to survive in an atmosphere where the white male powers that be in newsrooms everywhere consistently sensationalize the news, asking us to believe that Anna Nicole Smith and Paris Hilton are just as important as the Iraq war and global warming. As Jon Stewart recently pointed out on The Daily Show, CNN cut away from a story about General Peter Pace's resignation to go live to the courtroom where Ms. Hilton was getting in a car, they even went so far as to call in an expert, Tommy Chong (as in Cheech and..) to comment on the case. Not a shining example of having your priorities straight.

So are the news gate-keepers pushing tartiness? A recent AP piece proclaimed "Porn is becoming the ideal of what's sexy", explaining, "(T)he message is clear: In today's world, sex doesn't just sell. The pervasiveness of porn has made sexiness -- from subtle to raunchy -- a much-sought-after attribute online, at school and even at work." If that isn't blatant enough, try the new "Anchorwoman" reality show that will, as Jenn Pozner explains on the WIMN's Voices Blog, "feature a busty blonde bikini model and former WWE wrestler as an on-air anchor of KYTX Channel 19, a local CBS affiliate in Tyler, Texas." Not much room for doubt there.

Nonetheless, there is a case to be made that despite the language used, the key point is that the dumbed down tripe that passes as news these days is unacceptable. But it is also true that media sexism is alive and well and tartifiction as Mr. Rather so (dis)gracefully put it is hardly the only form of media misogyny which has many guises including ridicule, exclusion, discounting, discrimination, etc. Not only is that damaging to women but it creates a deliberately distorted view of the world that harms us all. And that is a crucial issue and to lose sight of it in the discussion of 'yes, but what he really meant to say...' only perpetuates the misogyny.

Was that the fault of the old boys network?

Also, did those old guys make her a hypocrite?

Katie Couric Contradicts College Commencement Address Four Days Later
Posted by Noel Sheppard on June 10, 2007 - 13:42.

Are you sick and tired of Paris Hilton and all the attention given to this wealthy debutant when there are so many more important issues facing the nation?

Well, if so, you’re in good company, for in a commencement address at Williams College last Sunday, CBS “Evening News” anchor Katie Couric accurately stated that this “fluff…can rot your mind and distort your values.”

Yet, just four days later, Couric actually gave more airtime to Paris Hilton’s brief departure from jail than every other story that evening with the exception of the opening piece about growing tensions between Russian President Vladimir Putin and George W. Bush and the final segment dealing with a retirement home for champion racehorses.

To set this up, here is the relevant text from Couric’s commencement speech:

The proliferation of celebrity magazines makes Lindsey Lohan’s latest stint in rehab seem more important than what’s happening in Darfur.

The kind of fluff that accosts us on the newsstand may seem like harmless fun, but it should also come with a warning label that says it can rot your mind and distort your values.

I whole-heartedly agree, Katie. Then why spend more time on Paris Hilton getting out of jail Thursday than you did on stories about the G-8’s declaration regarding climate change, what’s going on in Iraq, recent statements made by anti-American cleric Muqtada al-Sadr, and a man being charged for the murder of Kelsey Smith? Isn’t that a bit contradictory? Or, is it only okay for you to rot minds and distort values?

Making matters worse, Katie spent more time on this ridiculous subject Thursday than her competition on ABC and NBC.

Or maybe Couric simply isn't that great?

Why the hell is it never possible for a woman to fail fair and square? NO ONE wins 100% of the time, for crying out loud. The light fare of The Today Show and the hardness of evening news are lightyears apart, requiring different abilities. But facts are always irrelevant on Planet Feminism, aren't they? Any woman must always be presumed to be better than any man.

If you want a real example of sexism, it's promoting a woman into a position without paying any heed to whether or not she's got what it takes.

The case for singularly objectifying female anchors would have been stronger...

...had Jennings, Rather, and Brokaw been a tad uglier, and had they not spent a great deal of time in make-up to look better. The term "anchor" might even be considered an objectification by some. Sure, Couric is a pretty awful "weighty boat hook". Is she worse than her competitors? Meh; probably sometimes. I guess the massmediapublicconsumptors must think so more often than not, at any rate.

Is the evening news different from what runs in prep for game show in prep for daytime soap operas (hah, if you want a cynical response, look at evening programming)? I can't make that determination, as I'm busy being productive during that particular demographic. Maybe it would serve the night-shift folks a little better if we had "harder" news on earlier? More likely, having some "harder" news at any time would leave us all better served.

Perhaps some more coverage on the Palestinian issue? That's a very disturbing situation--Israel probably won't tolerate a Hamas secession state to form, even unofficially. Syria may take violent issue with any Israeli intervention, to which Israel would likely respond with devastating force. Iran may not allow Israel to forcibly block Syrian attempts to wake waves in Gaza. The U.S. may take forcible action (end the "downtime" cycles and issue rifles to all the desk jockeys in uniform and then institute a draft?) against Iran blocking Israel's attempts to preempt Syrian forces raiding Israelis attempting to block Hamas' formation of a state(-ish?) entity...and wasn't the falling of dominoes over a strategically insignificant event fueled by unbridled nationalism what precipitated WWI?

Oops. Was that ever off topic. We must remind ourselves of what's really important: the custody battle for some dead billionaire's dead ex-wife's living baby girl.

Well, coo-coo-ca-choo. I'll agree with ol' Dan. That's pretty freakin' tarty alright, Couric or otherwise.

Compare this story about tv news with the Guardian story today.

"Does the Internet Spell the End of Political Spin?" By Tania Branigan, The Guardian. Posted June 15, 2007.

The impact of the internet on the MSM is undeniable. Yes, most Americans are too lazy to read, so they will continue to worship in front of the boob tube. Since they are also too lazy to vote, let them eat their tv dinners in peace, so we can get on with the job of holding on to what remains of our democracy.

Neither Rather's comments nor the comments in this article amount to a hill of porridge. We all can find the news we respect, even without media *superstars* because the monopoly of the MSM is ancient history.

And those who need to view females as victims will find excuses galore to justify their narcissism.

Use to watch the Today Show, then on the morning of 'Shock & Awe' Katie (who had unabashed Republican leanings) stood there absolutely thrilled! She thought all that death and destruction, was just awesome! Trying to keep my breakfast down, I switched stations, and will NOT allow her face in my home ever again! I was in the military, I've seen the results of on real human beings, of all that 'awesome' "just like fireworks" fire power! Please, don't try to tell me about 'surgical strikes', no such thing.

I don't know the ratings demographics on the morning shows, but they are mostly fluff (the few times I have watched them). Evening newscasts, while needing more help, do not make me want to throw my TV out the window like the morning ones.

-Was very rude when she interviewed Michael Moore. I will never forget it-she basically called him fat...and he said..I pretty much look like the average American....

(Yes you do Mike! More important-you SPEAK for the Average American. Who cares what you look like?)

Then Michael said something to her about-you know I am a nice person..and she said..I do NOT know that...

What that woman is...is a royal BITCH. I will never forgive her.
All she is -is a Barbie Doll for rich old republican men to drool over. ICK.
