"We can look at those places where same-sex marriage has been legalized to see what the future looks like" - Ron Crews, President of The Massachusetts Family Institute, as quoted in the Washington Times, March 10, 2004

In Massachusetts, going into the state's 3rd year of legal gay marriage, the societal apocalypse that MFI head Ron Crews warned of, in the event gay marriage were made legal, never happened.

Legal gay marriage in Massachusetts is going into its 3rd year and the sky has not fallen. But, for the Massachusetts Family Institute, ideology may well trump facts; the MFI has repeatedly, in recent years, hosted public speaking visits by arch-historical falsifacationist David Barton.

Historical falsificationist ? Yes indeed :

As historian Chris Rodda has demonstrated, David Barton is perhaps the leading serial abuser of American history and his apparently intentional historical falsifications reach hundreds of thousands, if not  millions, of young Americans each year.

"It's like a rolling ball of snow. It gets bigger and bigger. You allow it in Massachusetts, it'll spread to God knows where." -  Massachusetts Democratic State Representative Emile J. Goguen, as quoted by the "Traditional Values Coalition" website.

In the seemingly fact-free zone that has characterized the new American religious right, such reality-based details hardly seem to matter, and so the new institution of legalized gay marriage, in Massachusetts, faces posssible voter repeal via a ballot initiative championed by the MFI. As Talk To Action co-founder Frederick Clarkson points out:

The religious right needs only a quarter of the legislature -- 50 votes -- for the referendum to move onto the ballot in November 2008. As of now, there appear to be 57 votes Democratic Governor Deval Patrick who was elected as an unequivocally pro-marriage equality candidate last year, is lobbying legislators heavily, and notes that if the initiative makes the ballot, it will be a major distraction from the work of the state.

Do the leaders of the Massachusetts Family Initiative have any actual evidence that gay marriage in the Bay State has caused any harm in the Bay State ? One would think the MFI would have to have some reason, in terms of the public wellbeing, for pushing an anti-gay ballot initiative on Massachusetts : what is the alleged public harm caused by gay marriage ?

Prior to the legalization of gay Marriage in MA, even Mass. legislators from the Democratic Party alleged that terrible results would ensue. But, in fact, two years after gay marriage was made legal in Massachusetts nothing much had changed, and the words of MFI president Ron Crews assumed a rather banal cast pointing towards a collective yawn.

But, leaders on the Christian right, such as James Dobson, do not seem to be yawning.

[Frederick Clarkson, continued]

At the HQ of James Dobson's Focus on the Family in Colorado Springs, Colorado --  all eyes are focused on the Massachusetts Statehouse on Beacon Hill. FOF "Citzen Link" news reports calls for "God's intervention," turning to quotes and analysis from FOF Action's state issues analyst; a spokesperson for the Massachusetts Family Institute, (MFI, a state political affiliate of FOF); and a spokesperson for VoteonMarriage, the coalition spearheaded by MFI and can be found on the MFI web site.

"The opposition has decided to use their considerable power and influence to see that the marriage amendment is defeated," said Mona Passignano, state issues analyst for Focus on the Family Action. "And the people of Massachusetts who want the opportunity to vote on marriage need our help -- and they desperately need God's intervention.

that some of the legislators who supported the bill that would place the question on the ballot have removed their names. Others who never supported it, found that their names magically appeared. There's much skullduggery going on here in Massachusetts in regards to giving the same rights enjoyed by hetros, to gays.

For being all pro-marriage, and with hetero rates still on a decades long decline, you'd think the wignuts would take a marriage wherever they could find it and be happy. They've been so obsessed with the tiny percentage who are gay that they've done little or nothing concrete to strengthen hetero marriage over the twenty-five years of the ascendency of their power and influence amongst conservativism, which has pretty well dominated our politics for most of that time. So you can add incompetence to their list of characteristics because even the many successful state amendments banning gay marriage which have passed have done nothing to wipe out homosexuality, which has always been their ultimate goal.

The lack of negative consequences has vastly increased the furor of the bigots (terrified that the will of the majority may prevail and rationality will retain its foothold), and their frustration (that gawd hasn't struck us down and forced their religious beliefs on our civil matters). And, of course, great attention and energy have been diverted from matters that really do deserve serious attention.

On the "plus" side, I suppose all these out-of-state fanatics coming in to roil the waters are helping the Commonwealth's economy by spending money on lodging, food, rental cars, and the like. Perhaps instead of ecotourism, it's errortourism.

Several good friends of mine are representatives, and they're caught in a nasty position: they don't want to deprive gays of their rights, and yet they look as though they're overiding the will of the people if they won't allow the amendment to come to a general vote. I simply hope that if it does go on the ballot, we'll be able to convince Massachusetts voters not to enshrine hatred, prejudice, and discrimination in our Constitution.

Nothing has made such anti-knowledge and intollerant people so pro-democracy as... being able to twist "democracy" to get a vote on things they don't like and that don't affect them to begin with.

The article mentions them, but never states what they are.

I agree with the statement, if it starts here, it will spread elsewhere. To me, with many gay and lesbian friends, I am hoping it spreads sooner than later.

We seculars use reason and facts while the wingnuts use faith-based balderdash that ignorant men of yore composed. They are impervious to reason.

David Barton & WallBuilders have been at it for a long time--distorting U.S. Early American History

Back before I became a registered Independent (& then a Democrat), I was a state delegate to Colorado's GOP Convention, in Denver, in 1992. David Barton's propaganda--Wallbuilders' product list for audio cassetts, VHS tapes, print track and books--was on every fold-down chair on the floor of the 1992 GOP Colorado Convention at Curringan Hall.

I couldn't believe that such demagoguery would be allowed at a political convention right after we'd celebrated as a nation the fifteen year period commemorations of the U.S. Bicentennial! What gaul!

Barton also sits on the boards of two other propagandistic and
history distortion groups: National Legal Foundation, Virginia
Beach, VA and Providence Foundation, Charlottsville, VA!

He also is requested as a guest speaker at Conservative Church Planting fund raising dinners, like at Faith Bible Chapel's dinner for their mega-church in Arvada, CO! Faith Bible Chapel has ties to Hillsdale College, in MI, where that
college receives big donations from Coors' political philanthropy arm, Castle Rock Foundation with also funds the
Heritage Foundation and over 250 other right-of-center groups.

Thank You for being on top of what Barton's up to! The Nation
needs to know about such charlatans!
