Democratic Congress Increasing Funding for Abstinence-Only?

Ellen Marshall: It is unconscionable for the Democratic leadership to play into the politics of abstinence only programming, rather than paying attention to the public health evidence.

This post, written by Ellen Marshall, originally appeared on RH Reality Check

Thinking globally doesn't seem to apply locally for the Congress. In the same week, the House Appropriations Committee seems to be of two minds on ensuring that all people have the information and services they need to decide when they do begin to have sexual relations, and when they do, to be able to protect themselves against unintended pregnancy, HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases.

While yesterday the House Foreign Operations subcommittee approved legislation that enables global HIV prevention programs to determine at the country level the most effective and relevant mix of services needed by individuals there, the word is that the House Labor-Health and Human Services subcommittee is planning on spending $27 million more than last year (a total of $150 million) on abstinence-only programs (specifically for CBAE--Community Based Abstinence Education program--as early as tomorrow). Yes, the same programs that time and again have been proven to have NO impact on changing the sexual behaviors of young people--but can create increased risk because they are refused a breadth of knowledge on the subject.

It is unconscionable for the Democratic leadership to play into the politics of abstinence only programming, rather than paying attention to the public health evidence. Even more disturbing--in a time of limited resources for public health programs--that the United States think about throwing good money after bad by adding funding to these programs. Just take a look at the states--coast to coast and parts in between--that are rejecting this kind of programming. So why spend more money?

Certainly if the Congressional leadership can see the benefit of ensuring flexibility in international programs to enable the best public health outcomes, the same principle should be applied to domestic programs.

Digg!

If the Democratic "leadership" wants to cement their image as being indistinguishable from Republicans, then there is no better way to do it than augment the Republicans' signature pork barrel projects, like AO sex ed and other programs that lead to a world for women in which forced-birth is their only option. It'll be like looking in a mirror except for big floppy ears replacing a long proboscis.

It didn't work when the Moral Majority, led by the late Jerry Falwell in the 80's, didn't work when Bush Sr. was in office, then it completley whent off the raday when Clinton was in office, and it ain't gonna work with this bonehead in office; what the hell the Democrats gonna do to make it work!

Like I say, all talk, no action

represent the Military Industrial Complex, NOT the People. Americans are being robbed of our country, our constitution and our freedom, and we're agreeing to it!

Figure out who controls and profits from the MIC to know the truth of what is happening. The only way to know the Truth is to do the research and dig, dig, dig! Their Plan to dominate the world has been many decades in the making. Don't believe the so called news anymore! The MSM is one monstrous ad agency for the MIC. They are hiding the Truth from the people while they herd us into a very dark age of ignorance. We the people must wake up - before it's too late!

Abstinance works

The absolute statement in the article, that there IS NO EVIDENCE that abstinance is effective, is just like any other absolute statement regarding human sexuality: wrong.

I could point out a large number of teenagers who conscientiously practice abstinance and point to positive effects from abstinance in terms of social maturity, academic performance, increased self-esteem and better health.

I do not know the proportion of teenagers who will respond positively to abstinance messages, it is possibly below half, but it is still a huge proportion of teens.

Alone among the different birth control options available to teenagers in modern America, abstinance provides a distinct set of cultural, personal and social values attached to sexual conduct.

The Democratic leadership is behaving responsibly and virtuously in supporting abstinance programs.

Yes, there sure is an Axis of Evil - It runs strsight from Rome to Washington, (with a detour through North Carolina). It doesn't take very long to research the absurd population growth in so very many third (maybe fouth or fifth) world countries. Check out Darfur, just about all of the rest of Africa, most of Latin America, on and on. The statements a few days ago by the Brazilian beauty queen were right on.
When will some supposedly thinking people wake up to what is going on?

DEMOCRATS TO SAVE THEIR A**, have turned to siding with showing the real powers (purse strings) they will take care of there interests. Pelosi taking impeachment off the table statement brought tons of money from corp ownerships to teh democrates in time for the Nov elections. Main presidential canadates want a strong military and to achieve a win in Iraq OIL just with differant tactics than republicans. THESE BETRAYALS TO VOTERS ARE IF NOTHING ELSE, SIGNALS TO POWERFUL GROUPS AND RICH THEY WILL ALSO DO THEIR BIDING FOR THEM. This is just another blow to our loss, and further evidence that the democrats are or have become really just decoys to achieve the same goals that Corporations want which is to remove as much of the left leaning elements as possible. All the war bills list at the top, conditions of achieving oil contracts. Now we see them kissing the desires of the religous right groups on these issues. Don't expect many had outs from this congress or senate because it is the extreme rich and Kstreet that own them. It is just another sign of Fascism that is rearing it ugly head more and more both in North America and Europe. On the debates beware as they speak to tell the truth they are talking out of both sides of their mouths. When democrates, Clinton and Obama say strong military it means in some way keep the effort to take over the oil supplies of the world in motion. Republicans are more brasin with there lies. We are in a fascist controlled military expansion to control the oil of the world so the industrial nations wealthy can stay ontop andcontrol emerging nations as China India and Pakistan. I cnnot believe they have stooped this low to support the abstenence only programs. Failing the voters on the war wear they cold just stop the funding. When they KING GEORGE botched the job bring troops home they are not saying close military bases or with out the oil contracts. Any voices that do will be side stepped later as in the last pres election.
