Purple HeartDid you know that George W. Bush was a war hero? I know that this development comes as a shock and surprise to many progressives who are familiar with Bush's military career, but he received a Vietnam-era Purple Heart award a few weeks ago in the Oval Office. Seriously.

28%-er Bill Thomas of Copperas Cove, Texas, decided recently to give George Bush one of the three purple hearts that he had been awarded in Vietnam. Bush was so blown over by this gesture that he invited Thomas and his wife, Georgia, to the Oval Office for the presentation...

The medal was presented to Bush, and Thomas said:

...he and his wife came up with the unprecedented idea to present the president with the Purple Heart over breakfast one morning a few months ago as they discussed the verbal attacks, both foreign and domestic, the commander in chielf has withstood during his time in office.

"We feel like emotional wounds and scars are as hard to carry as physical wounds."

Soak that all in for a moment.

If you factor in Laura Bush's lament last week that "...no one suffers more than the president and I do..." because of the conflict in Iraq ........ ..... ......... oh, fark it. I can't even snark this up anymore. Sometimes, true life irony is its own sarcasm. I guess Laura forgot that George isn't losing any sleep over it.

It's hard to believe that someone on Bush's staff didn't tell him that this might not be a good idea. It's hard not to be at a total loss for words. Don't forget - this is what Republicans think of Purple Heart recipients:

The infestation in the white house is so deluded, I wouldn't be surprised if he actually wears it... On his P.J.'s to bed at night and to impress his friends of course...

After all, who in the inner circle is going to tell him differently... Heck, he probably thinks he actually earned it.

Why not?He thinks he really won his elections, theft being a legitimate neocon tactic, and he thinks he 'earned' his wealth. We'll likely hear something in the future about this from him when he figures the public has had time to forget the actual facts.

With all the people who die falling down stairs, from suddenly manifesting deadly diseases, from lightening strikes, etc, why couldn't we just get lucky? There just is no justice in the world, and there's less and less here in the US.

Y'all listen, as all those years of meritous service in the national guard went unrewarded, it's about time he got something in recognition of his sterling efforts at keeping local bars and cocaine dealers in business while serving his country.
Gotta be deserving of a medal.

""We feel like emotional wounds and scars are as hard to carry as physical wounds."

After a statement like this... after taking this kind of action.... please tell me this man's injuries were severe brain injuries with some really serious PSD thrown in or maybe exposure to some exotic as-yet unnamed neurotoxin. Because otherwise this man, vietnam vet though he is, has just unzipped his pants and pissed all over every other soldier who fought and was wounded or killed in that senseless war by doing this. Kerry chucked his medals or his ribbons or something. This guy gave his to a rich draft dodger who bought a "war record" like he bought everything else in his life with his daddy's money and name because.... people dogged him for his unbelievable mistakes... repeated mistakes... coupled with a level of arrogance usually reserved for 16 year olds.

Then he handed over his Purple Heart when he should have thrown it away.

Wait a minute, he did throw it away, because Bush probably uses it to masturbate, thinking of all the innocent blood he's ordered fools and psychopaths to spill.

I am almost unable to stand this. I feel so sick to read this horrible news item. To think that any president, even one as morally bereft as this one, would accept such a thing makes me want to cry.

What a mockery! I could perhaps excuse the donor, he is misguided and perhaps unable to understand the significance of his actions; but how could Bush even consider accepting this medal? The only appropriate response to such an offer would be a polite and appreciative letter humbly declining the medal as undeserved.

If the president himself is unable to distinguish right from wrong, then the job should fall to his staff to advise him of the right thing to do. In addition, the congressman who acted as the go-between should have advised both parties of the inappropriate nature of this act.

Will future presidents award themselves Medals of Freedom? Will we see them in the review box saluting soldiers, tanks and missile carriers, wearing their medals like so many Soviet Premiers?

If my dad was still alive.......
Posted by: Voicedude on Apr 30, 2007 10:19 AM
Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Ooohhh, the OUTRAGE of this!

I said it before during the shameful GOP '04 convention referenced above, and I'll say it again. But first, some background:

My dad was in the Korean War, specifically in the battle of the Chosin Reservoir where many brave Americans died. He was one of five in his company to come home. Five.

After decades of NOT dealing with his wartime experiences, he finally found healing in a band of brothers called the Chosin Few. He eventually became president of the local chapter. He was invited to Washington when they presented the Korean War Memorial. He presented the Keynote Address at one of our nation's largest military cemeteries on Memorial Day and was on local news and newpaper's front pages. As a former radio man, he was quite eloquent. We were so proud. And yet - perhaps surprisingly - being a man of faith, he always supported peace and was quite apolitical.

A few months later, just after commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the start of the Korean War, my dad passed of natural causes and was laid to rest in that same military cemetery. I had always said that after all those milestones, that his work here was obviously done.

Clearly, it was not. I've always wondered what he would have thought about 9/11, about a rush to the wrong war, and especially about the 2004 GOP convention where those supporting a draft dodger BASHED one who served - a multi-decorated one at that - with their shameful purple hearts band-aids. ALL vets should have been outraged! Instead, the poser was re-elected!

I said it before, and I'll say it again:

If my dad was still alive, he'd no longer stay apolitical. He'd probably drive over to DC just for the opportunity to punch 'W' in his arrogant, smirking face! And he'd do it for ALL veterans: past, present, and future.

Please share this article with every vet YOU know!

of the woman mocking the Purple Heart is one of the most disturbing to come out of the US in recent years. Every time I've seen it, her mocking face angers me at a level I can't even describe. And I'm Canadian!

Would it be safe to say that she, nor any of her family served in Vietnam? Would it also be safe to assume that she may well have a son or grandson in Iraq?

We can only hope that in the event a Purple Heart becomes part of her family history, she will forever remember the day her photo was taken mocking those who died, or were injured - thereby giving her the freedom to do what she was so obviously enjoying. For now.

what are the veterans thinking now?

i find it hard not to imagine a lot of furious vietnam war veterans considering this circus event with the purple heart. when one puts all of the facts together....
bush was not elected prez his first term
- sent our country into war in that first term
- had never fought in vietnam
- was AWOL in his time of military service
- had never fought in any war
- is mismanaging the war by design
- has been perpetuating the "divide and conquer" tactics in the US and in Iraq to create distraction from the rampant criminal acts of our entire freaking government...!!!
......he has been the "scapegoat" for all of this, probably, but every president bares the weight of the country on their shoulders. that is the responsibility/honor of being prez.

lastly....where are all the purple hearts & other honorable medals for all the people who endure emotional abuse from spouses or family? that is somewhat of a duty to the country...keeping those abusive people occupied so that people like you and i don't have to fight in our own homes.....

it's ridiculous. this asskiss has just made a bunch of veterans throw up in their mouth a little and degraded one of the most honorable medals by presenting one to the likes of dubya for "emotional scars".

WHERE IS JUSTICE?!?!? he will be wearing his second-hand medal in prison.........he will pay for his crimes one way or another.....

Regardless of our opinions of Bush's war, thus is outrageous. This is an insult to every service member wounded in the line of duty. The guy who gave Bush his medal should be ashamed. A President with any character would have politely declined for numerous reasons. I am so p.o'd I can't even think!

If there's any truth to this story and you have not puked of late this will surely do the job! I cannot believe the twilight zone many Americans are living in! I cannot start my day without having to pinch myself because it's as if I went to sleep in one nation and woke up in a alternate universe!

The Purple heart given to a deserter! A killer of tens of thousands of human beings with no end in sight! A President who lied us into war! A man who forgot the victims of Katrina! Where I come from some would say that those who presented this pretender, to the throne, with the purple heart were a__ kissing.

Is this inane behavior to become the new America? What ever happened to Honor? Are "We" so far removed from integrity "We" can justify giving this President an award that is suppose to be given to the brave souls who "sacrificed everything" for their country!

What is it that GWB has given up for his nation? I guess you could say that he has given it up for the Halliburton's, Carlyle's, etc. Who cares that it's at the expense of our fallen!

Assume Nothing Question Everything!

I had to come back to see if I imagined this!
Posted by: myway on Apr 30, 2007 4:16 PM
Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
I had to come back to see if I imagined this! That a veteran, who served with other honorable men and women, would/could do such a thing in the light of day begs the question! WHY? How could you, in good faith, do this? Were you thinking about the fallen/disabled at anytime during the period that this idea came to you?

Ed Ellis & David Pearce, dear friends, would turn over in their graves hearing this! One Nam era, the other 2nd war, veterans! Both honorable men that would have no difficulty seeing through the farce that has become the norm in America today! "We" honor fools! "We honor deserters! "We" honor those who lead us into illegal wars with a lie at the beginning & end of every sentence!

We honor a President that cannot talk without reading what he's thinking & feeling! Even then he screws up!

I cannot for the life of me understand this thinking! What really irks me is that the media, for years, never held GWB accountable to his lie and rush to war with Iraq! If they had tens of thousands of people would be alive today, over 3000 our own! This person who gave him this honor has had the audacity to say it was because of the way the media is/was trashing GWB that he decided to do this! Hell the media would still be playing the same old, same old, if the "We", mentioned in the Constitution, hadn't found our good sense to remember who "We" are!

So if you want to blame someone I suggest you get your info right! The mainstream media, led by FOX & the ratings, looked the other way and indeed took the side of this administration and this lying President/VP until the "We" finally made that an impossibility! The media along with this White house set out to destroy all who stood in their way! Remember Wilson/Plame?

"We" are the voice of this nation and "We" were not being heard because of the mentality of those who followed the media like an obedient lap dog. A media who clearly had a vested interest in being part of the betrayal of America!

I thought, with this administration, ridiculous in America had reached it's pinnacle! I was wrong!

To honor someone who has dis-honored this nations citizens, on all fronts, begs the question! What is it that you stand for?

George Bush is a SOCIOPATH !
Posted by: Astroboy on Apr 30, 2007 4:52 PM
Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Pure and fucking simple: George Bush is a Sociopath.

When reading the list below of the traits of a sociopath I can cite AT LEAST one, sometimes dozens of examples of Bush expressing the said trait. It started to become a game for me, until I realized how goddamned FRIGHTENING the reality of the fact is, that this man is in contol of the so-called "most powerful nation on earth" !

*********************************************************

Profile of the Sociopath

Glibness and Superficial Charm

Manipulative and Conning
They never recognize the rights of others and see their self-serving behaviors as permissible. They appear to be charming, yet are covertly hostile and domineering, seeing their victim as merely an instrument to be used. They may dominate and humiliate their victims.

Grandiose Sense of Self
Feels entitled to certain things as "their right."

Pathological Lying
Has no problem lying coolly and easily and it is almost impossible for them to be truthful on a consistent basis. Can create, and get caught up in, a complex belief about their own powers and abilities. Extremely convincing and even able to pass lie detector tests.

Lack of Remorse, Shame or Guilt
A deep seated rage, which is split off and repressed, is at their core. Does not see others around them as people, but only as targets and opportunities. Instead of friends, they have victims and accomplices who end up as victims. The end always justifies the means and they let nothing stand in their way.

Shallow Emotions
When they show what seems to be warmth, joy, love and compassion it is more feigned than experienced and serves an ulterior motive. Outraged by insignificant matters, yet remaining unmoved and cold by what would upset a normal person. Since they are not genuine, neither are their promises.

Incapacity for Love

Need for Stimulation
Living on the edge. Verbal outbursts and physical punishments are normal. Promiscuity and gambling are common.

Callousness/Lack of Empathy
Unable to empathize with the pain of their victims, having only contempt for others' feelings of distress and readily taking advantage of them.

Poor Behavioral Controls/Impulsive Nature
Rage and abuse, alternating with small expressions of love and approval produce an addictive cycle for abuser and abused, as well as creating hopelessness in the victim. Believe they are all-powerful, all-knowing, entitled to every wish, no sense of personal boundaries, no concern for their impact on others.

Early Behavior Problems/Juvenile Delinquency
Usually has a history of behavioral and academic difficulties, yet "gets by" by conning others. Problems in making and keeping friends; aberrant behaviors such as cruelty to people or animals, stealing, etc.

Irresponsibility/Unreliability
Not concerned about wrecking others' lives and dreams. Oblivious or indifferent to the devastation they cause. Does not accept blame themselves, but blames others, even for acts they obviously committed.

Promiscuous Sexual Behavior/Infidelity
Promiscuity, child sexual abuse, rape and sexual acting out of all sorts.

Lack of Realistic Life Plan/Parasitic Lifestyle
Tends to move around a lot or makes all encompassing promises for the future, poor work ethic but exploits others effectively.

Criminal or Entrepreneurial Versatility
Changes their image as needed to avoid prosecution. Changes life story readily.

The guy wanted to give Bush his medal. It doesn't mean Bush has been awarded a Purple Heart. It means he has a medal, as a token of esteem. Surely many Purple Heart recipients have given their medal to a mother, father, son or daughter. Sure, in my opinion this is unearned esteem, and I suppose you could say it cheapens the award, but I think that's sort of like saying gay marriage is degrading to straight marriage. The guy can do with it as he likes. It doesn't make Bush a war hero.

My girlfriend linked me to this leftist site...don't know why.
Anyway, it’s good to know what and how the enemy is thinking. A long time ago I came to the sad conclusion that most liberals are worse than radical Islamists. Having spent 10 minutes of my Conservative Republican (yeah, stew in it) time reading the bilge and vile comments spewed here, why don’t you malcontents move to Iran or Syria since you have so much disdain for my country?
George W. Bush is the best thing that happened to my country during this trying time.

So, he can sleep well? I am reminded how 84-year-old author Kurt Vonnegut saw Bush shortly before his recent passing: "George W Bush has gathered around him upper-crust C-students who know no history or geography, plus not-so-closeted white supremacists, aka Christians, and plus, most frighteningly, psychopathic personalities, or PPs, the medical term for smart, personable people who have no consciences."
Here are a few definitions:
Pathological Lying
Has no problem lying coolly and easily and it is almost impossible for them to be truthful on a consistent basis. Can create, and get caught up in, a complex belief about their own powers and abilities. Extremely convincing and even able to pass lie detector tests.
Glibness and Superficial Charm
Callousness/Lack of Empathy
Unable to empathize with the pain of their victims, having only contempt for others' feelings of distress and readily taking advantage of them.
Lack of Remorse, Shame or Guilt
Does not see others around them as people, but only as targets and opportunities. Instead of friends, they have victims and accomplices who end up as victims. The end always justifies the means and they let nothing stand in their way.
Feels entitled to certain things as "their right."
etc.

Watch and enjoy Kurt and Jon Stewart on The Daily Show!!!

it wouldn't surprise me if he and a few others of his gang end up giving each other the nation's highest award.

.... a terrible slam to all the REAL Purple Heart Veterans.
Only from Texass is such thinking possible. Some catholic or some evangelical fundie will probably give him another medal for something else now, maybe Rick Santorum or Billo can come up with some medal.
The current Pope Benedict XVI can give him a catholic medal for something.
I have the Ad Altare Dei medal from catholic scouting and dozens of medals and awards that Bush can have. Bush is just as sick as the Texass medal giver.
Every true purple heart vet should rise up in anger at this travesty. Bush and his entire family just demean everything they touch, and Jeb is the next Bushie to haunt our future. Daddy Bush just said so on the Larry King show a few nights back.
I hope I die before Jeb gets to continue the Bush family destruction on America and the world. The Bush imperial family is the same as the British imperial family only much worse. They only killed Diana. I still mourn the death of that wonderful women. They just used her to produce babies and then discarded her. Much like the Bush family uses our troops.

As a veteran I can say that it is not only forbidden but also often illegal to wear a medal which you did not earn.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Purple_Heart

Remember the whining and sniveling done by the partisan "Swift Boat Veterans for the Truth" (who didn't care a whit for the truth but were organized strictly on partisan lines?) Remember how they brought up unfounded allegations of Kerry's Silver Star and 3 Purple Hearts and started a whispering campaign that perhaps he didn't earn them?

Remember how the Republicans used the same ploy on Murtha regarding his heroism and purple hearts? Remember how they alleged that he perhaps didn't quite earn them and that maybe there was a question?

Now we see the despicable sycophant Republicans setting up a photo-op for their beloved little dictator so he can wear a medal that he obviously did not earn and could not have earned because

HE HAS NEVER BEEN IN COMBAT, unlike Kerry, Murtha and a bunch of others whom despicable cowardly Republicans like to label as cowards. Not only has he never been in combat, he has shirked combat, avoided combat and never done ANYTHING heroic in his life.

How dare he wear this medal. If he had any shame he wouldn't have put it on his chest, he would have thanked the misguided donor and given it back or put it somewhere in his office as a reminder of the thousands who earned it on his missions in Iraq and Afghanistan.
