This is a guest post from Lucinda Marshall at the Feminist Peace Network.

The latest issue of Ms. Magazine has an unfortunate article (which unfortunately is not online) about the HPV vaccine. The gist of it is that the vaccine is good for women and anyone who opposes it (and they only acknowledge opposition that is based on fears that it will promote promiscuity) is anti-woman.

Nowhere is there any mention that there are concerns about both the effectiveness and safety of the vaccine that have not yet been fully addressed or that Merck, the company that manufactures the vaccine, has provided very significant funding to many of the legislators that are pushing the vaccine.

But that actually isn't what this post is about. This last week there was more confirmation that hormone replacement therapy is probably responsible for a significant percentage of breast, endometrial and ovarian cancer deaths during several decades.

According to the Washington Post, "An awful lot of breast cancer was caused by doctors' prescriptions," said Larry Norton of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. "That's a very serious and sobering thought."

No kidding. And in the meantime, not only did the pharmaceutical companies make a financial killing selling HRT, but they also profited handsomely from selling "The Cure" in the form of chemotherapy drugs to treat the cancer they caused in the first place.

Not coincidentally, as I have written about previously, these companies also donate heavily to organizations such as the American Cancer Society and Susan G. Komen for the Cure, both of which wield enormous influence on cancer research and policy.

But it isn't just HRT prescriptions that are the culprit. For some time now there has been concern about the estrogen-mimicking pesticides that regularly make their way to our rivers and streams, and the estrogen from birth control pills that is literally pissed into our sewage and other toxins and pharmaceuticals that jeopardize our water supply. We also know that human male sperm counts are dropping and that there have been incidences of male fish and frogs taking on female attributes. Anyone want to connect the obvious dots here?

So the point is this: we need to look beyond HRT at these other sources of unnatural estrogenic and estrogen mimickers and see if they too are adding to the cancer load. But going back to the first paragraph of this rant (no, that wasn't just a random potshot at Ms.), the thing that disturbs me about their take on HPV is that it seems to me that in the spirit of Mr. Norton's comments about HRT, it is truly un-feminist foolishness to just assume that this vaccine is a good thing when there are still substantial unanswered questions.

It isn't just the HRT -- it's Vioxx and DES, it's the high rates of Caesarean sections in this country -- all of the history of women's health care that ought to make us ask a lot of questions, it's the part where we are asked to spend huge amounts of money to wipe out a disease that is mostly under control already in this country, while not examining whether this drug will be made available to the women who might (if it is safe and effective) benefit from it in other countries where the incidence of cervical cancer is much higher. Our willingness to spend billions of dollars on this vaccine needs to be looked at in the context of women's overall health needs such as the hundreds of thousands of women who die throughout the world every year from the complications of pregnancy and the millions of women in this country who lack basic health insurance.

That is the analysis I expect from a feminist magazine. It is time to say no to the snake oil salesmen, their charm is far too deadly.

Digg!

Why is this author conflating two different issues and dissing Ms for not doing what she thinks they should do?

It's this sort of writing that gets dicey when it comes to trusting what the author intends, or appears to intend particularily when the original Ms article is nowhere to be found.

Misogyny, Racism and Homophobia

As long as our society supports (or permits by indifference or ignorance) the inequality of women, people of color and homosexuals, we will see sublte forms of abuse as is described here.

Laws mandating legal equality -- the ERA, Equal Marriage Rights, Equal Employment and Educational opportunities -- are just the beginning. But once laws change, even if it takes decades, negative attitudes toward minorities will become less accepted (see the Imus firings for an example of how decades after the Civil Rights and Voting Rights acts were passed, society is finally coming around).

Gay and lesbian people may be able to put their wishes in a legal writing to get some legal protections for their relationships, but until laws changes, "faggot" will still raise a chuckle while the "n" word may finally be recognized as a shameful glimpse into our unjust past.

Pharm Company Greed

This is standard pharm company greed; they'll sell any drug they can. The feminist issue is the original selling of the drug back in the day to deal with 'ill-tempered' wives; they then reinvented themselves to sell directly to women themselves for symptomatic relief.

It's not Misogynist if it Applies to both (all) Sexes

Yes, HRT may cause problems, but it was not foisted on women for no reason. They thought it would protect us from heart disease. That's not misogynistic, that is a mistake. Besides, you point out that vioxx and others are just as deadly and poorly researched., but vioxx is a medication men are prescribed too. Definetly no misogynist. Cesareans? Well, I would venture that the higher rate of cesareans is due to the mother's request, not the doctors.

Oh well, I am sort of used to crappy journalism and poor word choice from the writers and editors at here at alternet. It's like the gold standard around here.

Blame?

Let's face it, pharma has been using us as lab rats for years..it's not about to slow down now. It's actually picking up..just wait until Codex Alimentarius becomes law.

Back to the topic.

I've lost my grandmother, her sister, my Mother is fighting metastacized breast cancer (gone to bone), and while she was in the hospital fighting to live, her younger sister died..as all but my Mother (as yet) have done - of breast cancer. What did they all have in common? Estrogen related breast cancer, and HRT. When my doctor offered it to me as well, I declined. Then I was offered a lower dosage, and declined again. He seemed to be offended by my decision - even knowing my family history.

Which brings me to my point - we do have the right to refuse HRT, and I believe we should. Menopause is a natural event in every woman's life, it's not a curse...nor an illness that requires drugs. There are lots of things we can do to make ourselves more comfortable, and many natural ways to alleviate some of the 'grouch' that appears out of the middle of nowhere. We can and should be fully informed of what is available to us, if our doctors won't do it then we must take responsibility for our own research - then inform them of we'll tolerate. Or not.

Incidentally, I go with Mom to every oncology visit and on two separate occasions they have given her a prescription for drugs I'd never heard of, very new...cutting edge. She has refused to take chemotherapy EVER again...you guessed it...after researching both drugs, they were chemo in pill form. It would appear the medical community (especially pharma) may not be forthcoming...if there is a chance they can try something new - on you.

Red Brown and Blue Party comment

Let's face it. Our society is sick. The chief disease is patriarchy. The pharms creating sickness and selling the cure is rich. What snake oil salesmen. WE who buy into this sick system are just as sick. Lab rats indeed. I feel so sorry for us. We're money addicts, among our multiple addictions. Old man Midas learned he couldn't eat money but we haven't. It's the food, stupid. The pills are a form of food. RBB advocates for a natural life style and a political system centered on a womam's [sic] consciousness. The Lover Government has a womam as its centerpiece symbol. If womem don't wake up and take political action to knock patriarchs out of their high saddle, earth and her children are doomed. Why are breasts so vulnerable to cancer? Could it be the milk of humam [sic] kindness is drying up in our sick, patriotic, patriarchic, idiotic society. Menstrual blood flow and menopause are natural, celebratory events. We need a womamifesto which RBB provides in The Lover Government. Womem and men are equal but womem a little more so. So teaches nature.

Hormone replacement drugs often came from pregnant horses urine. These horses were bred over and over again for the urine they produce when pregnant.

This is a case of animal abuse and human abuse. Of whom ironically, are all females.

As far as M.S. goes, why did you not send this article to them?

I am 72 and do not take the pills the doctors offer. I took the advice of a female drug rep. and said no to Premarin etc. Now I only take one prescription for thyroid even though my cholesterol is hgh. The drugs we are all offered are prone to be harmful. The drugs offered to our children and mandated by the state are frightening. MS mag is following the money. We all have to be careful but women have been abused by the medical community too often. Stand and refuse!

Remember the Dalcon shield?

In 1971 I received the Dalcon shield IUD that was praised by women's health groups as a safer alternative to birth control pills. It was designed for women who had never been pregnant. In 1973 at 23yrs. I underwent an emergency radical hysterectomy to save my life after a massive pelvic inflammatory infection from tht IUD almost killed me. I was seeing a regular Ob gyn and he told me not to whine when I first complained of pain. It was an emergency room doctor who saved my life. My life was changed forever by a drug company who never admitted guilt.
The story keeps repeating itself. Drug companies want profit not our health. Be a wise consumer. What are they doing in other countries like Sweden? Beware of hype.

Vaccines dangerous and Bioidentical Hormones not

I, too, have serious doubts but with all vaccines with their many constituents not revealed to those injected. While mercury may have been removed to kill contaminents there are replacements and other toxins. Microbes are better handled by a healthy immune system gotten by a holistic nutritional approach.

HRT is a problem and is quite serious and not to be ignored. But, all the hype in all the news reports failed to distinguish between to two types of hormones. It was only the HRT from Big Profit Pharma causing the problems. Bioidentical hormones are not a problem. Leading alternative physician Jonathan Wright has written about this issue.
