If a Conservative Lies, And There's No Progressive Around to Tell the Truth, It's Still A Lie

David Sirota: The truth once again trampled by a television panel stacked with conservatives.

I don't know whether there's a sound when a tree falls in the woods and no one is around to hear it, but I do know that when a conservative goes on a television show, deliberately lies and no progressive is invited on the same show to tell the truth, a lie was nonetheless told. And that's exactly what happened on NBC's Meet the Press this Sunday.

I wish I could say I was shocked to see the Meet the Press lineup this Sunday once again skewed to favor conservatives, but I'm not. It's become standard operating procedure in Washington for journalist panels to favor the right, and yesterday was no exception. On the panel, there were three Beltway journalists and Kate O'Beirne, the archconservative editor of the right-wing National Review - and, of course, no progressive voice whastoever. Not surprisingly, this O'Bierne lie went wholly unrefuted:

"Public opinion polls, of course, as Judy said, do show the public enormously frustrated and pessimistic, but they also show that they don’t favor denying funds for this surge."

Funny, CNN’s March poll found 52% believe “Congress should vote to block the government from spending money to send additional troops to Iraq.” Similarly, CBS News's poll in February found 53% want Congress to either block all funding for the war, or at least block funding for the surge. And a Pew Poll in February found 72% “think Congress should try to block Bush's plan by withholding funding for the additional forces.”

Now, it may be true that there are a few polls that ask the question differently that show the public evenly divided on whether to fund the surge. But between those evenly split polls and the ones showing strong support for cutting off funds for the surge, O'Beirne's airtight declaration that polls supposedly show the American people "don't favor denying funds for this surge" is, at best, wildly uninformed, and more likely a deliberate lie.

Conservatives like O'Beirne have gotten used to being on television, making up their own reality, and having no one call them out because - as we saw on Meet the Press - there are often no informed progressive voices represented right there to counter them. Yes, it's true, moderators like host Tim Russert are supposed to inform the audience with facts when lies like this are told - but as we all know, Timmeh is the one who helps make sure the panel is stacked, and he's not about to embarrass his right-wing friends when they use his esteemed show to mislead the public.

How many outlets called Romney's statement that he is a lifelong hunter (who has hunted twice) what it is... a lie?
Its not a mistake.. its not "out of context".. the man out and out LIED. This is not one of those moral principles he can have a spontaneous change of heart over just to get votes from "conservatives" too stupid to know better.. its a lie.

As for the lie talked about in the article... well, how do you think consent is manufactured????

Oh, the progressives are around. The question is whether or not they have the courage, guts, raw fortitude, intestinal stamina to stand up to the loud mouthed, hate spewing right wing and say what needs to be said, in this case, that Imus is a bigotted, hateful racist who doesn't deserve an audience for this hate speech, that he should be taken off the air. If any progressive speaks out, of course, that unfortunate person will be called all sorts of hateful names by the loudmouths on the right, Limbaugh, O'Reilley, Malkin, etc. and said to be unfit to be allowed to speak to the American people. The truth is that the right wants to ban the truth, honor, integrity, ethics.

Who lied?

Why do you call her/them "conservatives?" There is hardly a conservative in the National spotlights. They are Republicans with policies and agendas that make conservatives cringe (not to mention how they affect moderates and progressives). Please stop labeling them with this once honorable designation? You are contributing to the corruption of a very important word in our language.

If you are too busy to research her/their proper labels may I suggest a few? Perjurer, falsifier, slanderer, doubledealer, prevaricator, deceiver, traitor, betrayor - according to the legendary political observer and intellectual Bill Maher, the most appropriate of these may be "traitor."

I haven't watched "Meet the Press" since Lawrence Spivak was the host and the broadcast was LIVE - not on tape like it is today. I'm much too old and too liberal to pay any attention to the wingnut drivel that appears on "the Sunday talkSHOWS" these days.

Every Sunday morning *I check out Meet The Press and usually fall asleep. The right wing talking heads are very boring and Tim Russert has only had a few flashes of journalistic integrity a few times in his life. .He usually gets the White House talking points discussed and never seems to question anything real. I remember when news like Meet the Press questioned power without mercy. They need to change the name to Meet My Buddies.

Lies go unrefuted on Meet the Rightwing? More important than the amen chorus is the tone and persistence of the questioning when a progressive - particularly a candidate - is on the hotspot.
If his interrogations of rethugs were 10% as tough, he could bring out a whole lot of truth - if that was actually his goal. Sometimes he "piles on" when the R position has been exposed (elsewhere) as completely indefensable. In the main though, he does his best to preserve the illusion of "Journalistic Objectivity" while acting as an effective propagandist for the right.
