This story is from the Silicon Valley Metro (ht: Robert, our intrepid copyeditor):

SEN. Dianne Feinstein has resigned from the Military Construction Appropriations subcommittee. As previously and extensively reviewed in these pages, Feinstein was chairperson and ranking member of MILCON for six years, during which time she had a conflict of interest due to her husband Richard C. Blum's ownership of two major defense contractors, who were awarded billions of dollars for military construction projects approved by Feinstein.

As MILCON leader, Feinstein relished the details of military construction, even micromanaging one project at the level of its sewer design. She regularly took junkets to military bases around the world to inspect construction projects, some of which were contracted to her husband's companies, Perini Corp. and URS Corp.

Perhaps she resigned from MILCON because she could not take the heat generated by Metro's expose of her ethics (which was partially funded by the Investigative Fund of the Nation Institute). Or was her work on the subcommittee finished because Blum divested ownership of his military construction and advanced weapons manufacturing firms in late 2005?

The MILCON subcommittee is not only in charge of supervising military construction, it also oversees "quality of life" issues for veterans, which includes building housing for military families and operating hospitals and clinics for wounded soldiers. Perhaps Feinstein is trying to disassociate herself from MILCON's incredible failure to provide decent medical care for wounded soldiers.

Two years ago, before the Washington Post became belatedly involved, the online magazine Salon.com exposed the horrors of deficient medical care for Iraq war veterans. While leading MILCON, Feinstein had ample warning of the medical-care meltdown. But she was not proactive on veteran's affairs.

Feinstein abandoned MILCON as her ethical problems were surfacing in the media, and as it was becoming clear that her subcommittee left grievously wounded veterans to rot while her family was profiting from the occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan.

I don't have much to add. For background, check out Joshua Frank giving it to the Senator with both barrels, here.

I'll just say this. Even if you think this criticism of Feinstein is unfair -- as I know some do -- you have to acknowledge that this kind of stuff sends the message that all of Washington is the same. It allows Republicans to hold onto the delusion that their brand of corruption over the past decade was run-of-the-mill -- just Standard Operating Procedure for the party in power -- and it just demoralizes progressives.

Digg!

Joshua, I am glad to see more posts by you.

I consider myself progressive and vote Dem or Green, and I hope Dems will show true leadership by investigating this. If Dems really want to show they are different, then they have to show principles and investigate this. The true proof of principles is that if she left or jumped ship, the Dems would lose the majority in the Senate. What better sign to Americans who have become cynically about graft and corruption in politics than to risk power and investigage your own.

The Democrat/Republican "choice" is a fake choice. Both parties, especially at the Federal level, serve the same corporate, global-elitist masters. It is a very clever system as the people believe that they have a choice; although the very same system only allows two choices- both of which have been vetted and approved by the corporate elites. Similiarly they seek to divide the people with more fake choices, Hollywood/political scandals, sports franchises, etc to take away from true thought or political opinion. Freedom is not the right to choose "coke or pepsi". Or the 'choice' to decide what colour the highway signs will be on the new transnational NAFTA 'super' highway (owned and tolled by foreign nationals) but whether we should allow our very infrastructure to be sold off to private (and often foreign) corporations!! The government, with the approval of both parties, have essentially sold off much of our PUBLIC assets to private corporations. The government (and the rich) then buy stock in these private corporations and earn great profits- for them (however they don't include those returns when formulating their budgets). Then the government says 'we have no money' we need to raise taxes on the people and privatise more infrastructure!! Meanwhile let's destroy the working and middle classes by unfettered illegal immigration, allowing banking/insurance companies to have usurious lending rates, and disallowing easy bankruptcy (for people only; companies will always be bailed out.)

Just the tip of a vast iceberg...

Blum is the Regent of the University of California. The University of California is the manager of Lawrence Livermore and Los Alamos labs, who were just competing for the 'new nuclear bomb design'. The new nuclear bomb designs will be built by the likes of General Electric (we bring nuclear weapons to life!) and BWXT. The actual contract for control (management) of the labs is shared by the University of California, Bechtel, the Washington Group, BWXT, and Battelle Memorial Institute (The US biowarfare contractor with close ties to the fall 2001 anthrax attacks).

We can go on from here for quite a while, but the basic facts are that the US nuclear and biowarfare programs are very profitable for the firms that get such government contracts. Project Bioshield, for example, funnels billions to Big Pharma for biowarfare research. Of course, they're saying that they need to produce new bioweapons in order to defend against them - does anyone actually believe that tripe?

The Feinstein-Blum-Bechtel-George Schultz (Bechtel director)- George W. Bush connections are very clear. Feinstein is just another Liebermann, just not as prominent. However (and this is the rather ugly, disgusting fact of reality) is that Feinstein is still better than her putative Republican replacement. Northern/Central California and the Bay Area (Feinstein's district) are far more conservative than most people believe, and the information in this region (media outlets) is tightly controlled by the corporate media system; that's why Feinstein persists.

Throw her in the same cellblock as Duke Cunningham and the defense industry/CIA bureaucrats covered in doo in the Dukester's contracting for Yachts scandal.

In the end, anyone who votes for the hundreds of billions of dollars of bloat called the "Pentagon" or "Homeland Security" is a slimebag. Oh golly. If we jailed all the slimbags, except for three or four leftist radical congresspeople (love ya Denny) and one "Republican" libertarian (Dr. Ron Paul) in the House, Nancy "Sweatshop" Pelosi, Steny "expand expand Patuxent Naval Air Station" Hoyer and Trent and Mitch and Harry "Las Vegas is my kind of town" Reid and the rest of the US Congress rightfully would be in cages!

Ah, dream on Edith.

of why voters should suspect any mega-millionaire running for public office.
She bought a six million dollar home in D.C., I'm sure to better serve her constituents, and a 16.5 milion dollar home in Specific Whites, not far from her other mega-million dollar home on Arguello Street.
As long as voters continue to vote people like her into office, the public will be served.

and, at least, he was patently obvious when it came to his desire to military contracts. He was MUCH more fun to listen too also. Recall "B-1 Bob" foaming-at-the-mouth and ranting on CSPAN only to realise that he would be talking to an open gallery (that odd American parliamentary idea that you can get stuff into the record by talking to noone, then 'revise' your remarks if you said a no-no.) Regardless it was too bad those illegals kicked Bob out. He's crazy but was fun to listen too. (Imagine how he could pontificate if he got elected Senator!!)

Admittedly, in a nation that has run its rule of law by the rule of profit (how else do you explain our tax laws? and giving corporations the privileges of personhood?) it is very safe to say, "Follow the money."

But to explain Ms Feinstein's actions by insinuations about motives mimics the simplistic explanations of dogmatists.

I wish she were a crusader. She ain't. Never has been, never will be. That she behaves like she's rich (the expensive property) is maybe because she is rich?

Is it not true that the Senate has a code of ethics? If that code is not being enforced, then we need to know why. But isn't this an instance of closing the barn door after the horse is gone? She has resigned her positions. That should be a reason for cheers instead of grump, grouch, gripe.

Yeah, I know. Cheering isn't something we've had a lot of practice doing in the last 30 years. But give it a try. It begins, "Guess what? Feinstein has finally found her way."

Feinstein Represents her constituents; dependency on Arms development has its price...

Feinstein is truly representing her constituents; but the problem emerges when you consider that a great number of her constituents are dependent upon Armaments development.

Is it any wonder, then, that she would inevitably end up in scandal?

Armaments production provides NO long term benefit to society; in fact, their development ALWAYS tends toward economic stagnation and militarism.

If the weapons are used, people die. When people die, the interests of the people of this country are not served well.

When people die on foreign lands and our military unleashes a strategy of "total domination", the interests of the peoples they wish to "liberate" is sacrificed on the altar of "total domination".

The Military Industrial Complex cannot have it both ways: they cannot at once believe they are liberating a country while simultaenously destroying that country!

War is hell. And anyone who wages war enters the Fires of Hell...they invariably confront the hypocrisy of their own actions.

Miltarism IS THE PROBLEM. EMPIRE is the problem.

Do you know that the US has 730 (known) military bases throughout the world? And that there are only about 200 nations? We are an Empire of Bases -- military outposts armed with the latest war technology, threatening any would be challengers, conducting "secret operations" by the CIA against "unfriendly regimes" ("unfriendly" regimes are those governments popularly elected). Friendly regimes are puppets of US coporate interests (read "Confessions of An Economic Hitman"). While professing adherence to 'democracy' we finance and arm State Sponsored Terrorism in our "client states" -- of which there are many. (read: "Nemesis")

So what is a citizen to do? How can we confront this corrupt system of governance? (The next lines in this note will be recorded by the NSA).

Well, we can do as our forefathers have done. We can rebell.

How can we rebell against a system that has everyone ensnared? Politicians, board members, etc.?

Two things:
Everything comes to an end. Political systems must end.

Empires begin, decline, and fade from history. The American Empire is no different. It may not happen in our lifetime, but happen IT WILL.

We can contribute to the demise of the American Empire by becoming more democratic in our actions, more concerned about the people and the other life-forms of this planet, more active in presenting alternatives to the status quo.

It's up to you, it's up to me. Together we can make a new future.

You just have to ask yourself where is the mainstream media on this one? You can bet that if this were a Republican of any stripe that the New YaK Times and the Washington Compost would be all over this story. Since its a well established liberal Democrit you can hear the crickets chirping in the back ground. They may pick up this story if there is enough public clamor for investigation but rest assured that it will be relegated to page 23 in the metro section of the paper(s). As far as the video news is concerned I'll bet that w/o public clamor of the highest volume you'll not hear or see anything about Feinstein the war profiteer. Listen and watch......

Social and Economic Cannibalism

As we have seen during the last six years, deregulated capitalism quickly degenerates into social and economic cannibalism. Conservatism and it’s atavistic ideology has corrupted both political parties and empowered millions of sociopaths. Not strictly limited to rightwing Jews and Republicans, the Military Industrial Complex proved that war profiteering is an equal opportunity employer barring none but the poor and unskilled.

The millions of Americans losing their jobs to foreign outsourcing would do well to learn the technical skills required to secure jobs with “defense contractors” because if all goes according to plan, it’s either that or service related jobs like trash collectors and pedicurists.

Wealth of info and opinion

In all the time I've been sounding off on this site I've never seen a topic that matches this one on Feinstein for useful information and cogent opinions. Let me add my .02c. The signs were there all along that Feinstein was never in the business of representing the people. We are so naiive as to believe that a millionaire has our interest at heart. The Senate has been known as the "Millionaire's Club" for as many years as I've been following politics. It is a disgrace! And now the House is also headed by a millionaire, Pelosi,so we can be doubly certain that we're being well represented can't we?

Feinstein has been known for her "caution" when addressing any problem and the reason is, she's never quite sure how her action will affect her many interests but she profits from being seen as a steady and cautious Senator who will not fly off the handle. She is always willling to "study" a problem instead of doing something. Everything she does has been well thought out up to and including her resignation from her committee on a Friday as the best possible day to minimize the unfavorable reaction sure to come. This is one broad who knows her way around the world of politics.
If this latest scandal does nothing else, it forcefully points to the fact that corruption is rampant in both major parties as Ralph Nader so clearly stated a long time ago.
Blum, Feinstein's low-profile, high profit husband couldn't be any happier as he's already made all the money he needs for two lifetimes and now they can retire in the elite comfort provided by taxpayer's money. Their main problem is figuring out how much time to spend in each of their many million dollar homes. Ain't America great? I wonder if they also bought a mansion in Israel?

Republicans AND Democrats have Suppressed 9/11 Truth

Both Democrats and Republicans have sat on the disturbing facts regarding the BBC announcing WTC 7 collapsed 23 MINUTES BEFORE IT DID, without one query from our Congress about WHO told the BBC that disturbing fact 23 MINUTES TOO EARLY.

The same military contractors support both parties, yes the GOP more, but if the Democrats won't ask simple questions like,
1) Why was there molten steel in the rubble of WTC Towers and Building 7, when jet fuel can't melt steel, and
2) Where was the Air Force on 9/11
3) What happened to Pentagon defense systems on 9/11
4) Why did the 9/11 Commission omit crucial facts like the mysterious collapse of WTC Building 7, Norm Minetta's testimony of a Cheney led Air Force stand down, etc.

The corporate media (Scarborough Country MSNBC, etc.) have begun to attack not only Rosie O'Donnel, but also to character assassinate Barbara Walters in an attempt to strong arm her into firing Rosie.

I'll be demoralized when Dianne Feinstein doesn't commit hari-kiri, as would any public figure of integrity who's profited from the destruction of a sovereign nation and the murder of hundreds of thousands through the conduct of an illegal, immoral war. As for Joshua Holland, where in hell were you over a year ago when Joshua Frank wrote his column detailing the Feinstein-Blum crime syndicate? This news actually broke before the "official" invasion of Iraq, as early as 2002, for those of us in California who were already aware that Blum's positions with URS and other corporations was sure to show up in Feinstein's support of funding the war and occupation. And yes, this is just more of the same, and anyone with their heads not stuffed up the donkey's ass could have seen this decades ago: just look at all the past Democratic manipulations and maneuverings that preceded the various U. S. invasions and interventions (Wilson, Truman, Kennedy, Carter, Clinton). It's all one party, stupid!

I'm not saying that Dianne Feinstein doesn't have things to answer for; I recall reading about this conflict of interest a few years ago and thinking, wow, and she's on our side.

I just think it's ironic that Feinstein's dirty little secrets should be the public focus at this moment, while two of the top vampires from our nasty little excursion into the Middle East are sitting in the White House as we speak. Why is Feinstein suddenly the war profiteer du jour when Halliburton placement Dick Cheney has been taking care of his old company from day one, with his li'l buddy right next to him, scion to a fortune made off of Hitler and every other bloody dictator ever since. Now that it's a Democrat who's doing it, suddenly we're all concerned about war profiteering by our national leadership? Who's next, Bill and Hillary?

Maybe it's time Americans woke up to the fact that much of our national economy lives on a philosophy that you just can't have too much death and destruction these days. And let's think about that the next time we have to close a school or a post office for lack of funding.

Feinstein's malfeasance is ingrained.
As Mayor of San Francisco around 1980, she mandated that landlords of welfare hotels subsidized by the city spend enormous sums to bring their properties up to a new standard dicatated by her.
Hotels owned by her family were specifically excluded, giving them an enormous competitive advantage.
Dianne was also caught out spending her electoral funds on her own groceries.
Handing billions in military construction projects to her husband is merely an update of her lifelong habit.
Imagine what rackets such a fraudster could perpetrate as president -- something we might soon get in the person of Hilary Clinton -- or dark horse Svengala ConDoll.

A Democrat resigns from a senate subcommittee because her husband is making money off the government and the Republicans scream victory. Waving a flag for a sociopathic Vice President who is making billions of dollars off of the goverment and orchestrating the deaths of thousands of Americans and Iraqi's to do so is considered patriotic?

America has turned into one sick country that doesn't even vaguely resemble the country that I grew up in. When wearing a label of Republican or Democrat is far more important than actions toward mankind; it is obvious that Christianity has been abandoned and we have returned to the days of the crusades as we plunder the world for its treasures. No wonder the world spends so much time hating us. Talk about being a country filled with mindless hypocrites.
