Beyond the pale: anti-gay, racist emails from Army recruiter

"GO BACK TO AFRICA AND DO YOUR GAY VOODOO LIMBO TANGO AND WANGO DANCE AND JUMP AROUND AND PRANCE AND RUN ALL OVER THE PLACE HALF NAKED THERE."

-- U.S. Army recruiter Sgt. Marcia Ramode, using her military email address to respond to Jersey City resident Corey Andrew, after Ramode learned Andrew was gay.

Is this the General Peter Pace policy at work?

Corey Andrew had his profile and resume posted at Careerbuilder.com, and it caught the eye of Army recruiter Marcia Ramode, who contacted him. He wasn't interested in a position in the military, particularly because of the ban on gays and lesbians in the military.

When Andrew informed Ramode that he is gay, and believed that the DADT policy was wrong, the two engaged in a three-day email exchange that included statements by Ramode, in her official capacity as a recruiter, that boggle...

... the mind. (Jersey Journal):

After more prodding from Andrew on the Army's recruitment policy, the messages escalated into a bigoted tirade. For example, Ramode told Andrew that "being gay is disgusting and immoral."

…Steve Ralls, a director of communications for the Service Members Legal Defense Network, which helps victims of discrimination under the "Don't Ask Don't Tell" policy, says Ramode should be fired.

"The recruiter's remarks were outrageous and offensive in almost every way," Ralls said. "Anti-gay harassment throughout the military is well documented but this is particularly egregious because the recruiter's language is so homophobic and racist."

Andrew forwarded the emails to SLDN, and, well, it blows your mind to see the calibre of people now being allowed to recruit. This is completely unacceptable, and stains the reputation of those wearing the uniform. Can you believe this brazen filth was sent out under a military domain as official business communication --

and look at this:

And here's another, where Ramode tells Andrew to "migrate to another country" if he objects to paying taxes to support the military, which discriminates against gay and lesbian citizens, and "if you do not like me writing in caps then delete my email and do not respond I think it scared you to death."

According to a statement from public affairs officer, Sgt. Douglas Smith, the U.S. Army Recruiting Command's Staff Judge Advocate has bumped the case up to Ramode's commander for "review, investigation and appropriate action." Ramode, as you might imagine, didn't return calls from reporters.

Our tax dollars are paying for taxpaying citizens to be treated like this; gays and lesbians are fighting and dying for their country right now, while Ramode gets to sit at a desk and tap out homophobic, racist tirades to U.S. citizens while representing the Army. It's wrong on so many levels.

NOTE: The Jersey Journal article also noted that the name calling went in both directions once Ramode lobbed the first volley of outlandish statements.

The insults were not only flying one way, as Andrew criticized her vocabulary and poor spelling and, after finding out she was a Native American, wrote:

"So take that to your next rain dance."
That was racist and out of bounds as well, but of course the whole nonsense wouldn't have occurred had Ramode simply said that the military's policy is that we don't recruit openly gay and lesbians citizens, and left it at that. She clearly felt the need to unleash the vitriol and it all escalated. She was the one representing the government -- and the taxpayers.

UPDATE: in the land of conservative make-believe, Riehl World View chooses to believe that the military recruiter was set up to engage in that flame war. Oh yes -- but, she made the first contact, and chose to continue communicating in that manner while representing the government. Get real. If Ramode felt so curiously compelled to respond as she did (or knew any better), she should have opened a Gmail, Yahoo or other non-work account, no? Please.

Many native American tribes were tolerant of gay men and women, referring to them as Two-Spirits. Evidently this homophobic wacko has been contaminated by the idea that being gay is a choice and immoral. Hmm I wonder which mythological fake religion taught her that.

This "recruiter" is clearly filled with such self loathing at her inner desires that she lashes out on anyone living their truth. She may be genetically Native American but spiritually she is totally unevolved. While it angers me think my taxes pay for her to spew her hate, a part of me feels very sorry for this lost little girl. She is so afraid of what she doesn't know or doesn't want to know that her only recourse is name calling. This only illustrates her lack of intelligence, lack of maturity and lack of empathy.

In a world with over 6 billion people, to be afraid of concepts or lifestyles that do not conform to your carefully drawn box of rules is just plain stupid. Quit looking at your neighbors life and focus on your own. All that being said, the little idiot should be fired, dishonorably discharged and forced to repay the tax payer of the US for the salary she's drawn since this incident. Of course under Bush and Company lead by Perkins, Dobson and Robertson, she'll probably be awarded the purple heart.

any statement or action he/she/other they might make. Remember they are a persecuted entity toiling under the weight of a white, male elitist hegemony. One in which the very language and grammar used forces all who participate in it to utter phrases and words that reinforce this male-based, racist culture. The Sapir–Whorf hypothesis clearly makes this case. She cannot be judged for her actions as she (a female which is a protected class of 'minority' -although by numbers the majority), a Native American (racists call them 'indians'), and is, on top of everything esle, a female in a male-dominated culture (the military.)

gotta work hard to associate economic leftism (progressive taxation, single payer healthcare, long vacations, high minimum wage etc) with Identity Politics (gay rights, racialism, war between the sexes, affirmative action, etc).

Else how are the rich people gonna keep america from turning into europe?

Gotta poison that well for the white lower middle class! Gotta keep them away from economic leftism! Gonna associate gay rights/racialism/gender wars, etc with economic leftism.

Remember, creating the rich man's PseudoLeft is HARD WORK! But someone's gotta do it....looks like Alternet and the fakelefties are hard at work....doing it!

That there are a minority of ignorant and hateful people in society, and that our society reflects our people in uniform.

That's an obvious point. The fact that recruiters are people too, and that there are a number of distasteful people in the country don't strike me as particularly "heinous", so long as the stupidity is solely e-manifest in e-versions.

The same Army that will shortly be discharging that idiot recruiter for misconduct (take it to the bank) also does many good things that represent the best of America.

Like This

I served 8 years active duty and am proud of what I accomplished and participated in.

To the ignorant Recruiter: Many gays serve in the Army and have for years. They have been and are among the finest to have ever worn the uniform. Get your prejudiced head out of your arse.

Why is the recruiter's phone number blacked out? There must be a lot of people who would like to make an educational phone call to her.

... the military hasn't exactly been hiring genius lately. Those, in fact, they get RID of. For that matter, they don't even seem to like competence. Almost the only place they can get people fool enough to sign up are from the prisons and jails, the rehab centers, the very young - many with medical problems - and the older-and-desperate. So just how surprised are you that they hired a self-loathing bigot?

what are the standards for a recruiting position?

One would think that in order for a military member to be assigned to recruiring duty( a relativel;y cushy job, compared with Afghanistan and Iraq), The new rrecruiter would be expected to drmonstrate finely-honed communication skills, including the ability to express his/her views coherently, and the ability to spell and punctuate properly. Obviously, auch a requirement did not exist when the recruiter herein cited was given the recruiting assignment. She she immediately reassigned to "peacekeeping "duty in Baghdad and her current position filled by an effective communicator.

How about instead of assuming an anti-military posture we assume that the military has better intentions and will shake off this sort of knucklehead. They will. Homophobia may still be an open question in the services but racism is not.

Follow up if you feel like it but I will safely assume that this recruiter's military career is over with a less than honorable discharge on the record.

The recruiter had one positive, she showed initiative in contacting this guy.

Unfortunately she showed a lot of bad judgement. It sounds like he used this contact to make the point that he wouldn't hid his sexual orientation and that as such it was pointless to recruit. And she went seriously unhinged.

I think the author started by making the connection to Gen. Pace's comments and the Don't Ask Don't Tell policy, but didn't follow through. I do think this policy and Gen. Pace comments make the recruiter more comfortable in expressing her bias.

At least this recruiter didn't try to sleep with this person she was seeking to recruit. I am surprised that Gen Pace's comments on immoral behavior didn't address that issue or the sexual assault that female soldiers often face from their brothers in arms.

I'd be interested in reading the entire encounter

I don't for an instant doubt that this woman is a paranoid, bigoted freak and needs to be removed from the military forces that defend and protect our nation.

That said, I'd like to read how this all started. Was it a simple matter of something like this:

Hi, we want you to join the Army because you're so smart.
But I'm gay and I don't approve of the anti-gay policies.
You're gay? You're not just putting me on to get me to stop because you have a personal beef with the military?
No, I'm really gay. What, do you have a problem with me being gay?
Well, now that you mention it...

Or did she go on the offense from the start?

I'd also be interested in how she deals with, say, non-Christians she tries to recruit, or Hispanics born in the US, or Native Americans who are assertive about their heritage from the git-go. Maybe she's just a b*ttho*e and needs to be kicked out of the military for that or maybe she really is just anti-gay and anti-black and needs to be kicked out of the military for THAT.

Anybody notice that (as of 11:00 on 5/27) a Google search for Marcia Ramode locates only a listing of her marraige to some poor sap (the listing not being in the actual text). A search on Altavista yields 68 hits. Curious.

It seems like somebody certainly benefited from lowered recruitment standards. Those emails are barely literate. Has that woman ever picked up a book in her life? Diagrammed a sentence? Know a thing about grammar? If this is the intellectual and ethical quality of the personnel within the armed forces, then no wonder we are in a whole world of shit.

I'd sooner trust the Michigan Militia to protect me than this ignorant piece of shit.

.............for being Native American. Otherwise we would be holding them to a lower standard, as if they aren't bright enough. Ramode told Andrew that "being gay is disgusting and immoral," but what she should have said was "being Ramode is disgusting and immoral." Fling "Christian" pigshit right back in the flingers' faces.

Being homosexual is not immoral. The perverted sexual acts and desires of homosexuals are the problem and immoral. State laws and major religions have clarified this. Homosexuals are being tested and should abstain from their perverse carnal desires. Liberal judges and misguided religious leaders have tried to undo and to some extent have changed the law. But the truth remains. Homosexual acts are immoral, and with all the std they should fear!

As far as the military, they must be made to declare their sexuality and preferences. They should have separate showers. Do we allow men and women to shower together?

American society should not be forced by the courts to accept homosexuality as a normal lifestyle. Why should my grade school children or any child be taught by a homosexual. Why should they be allowed to adopt? They will raise confused children and to say a child will not be effected by having momie and momie or daddy and daddy is a lie. Wake up America. Homosexuals have gained more civil rights that your Black Americans.

The root of the problem
Posted by: AnamCara on Apr 3, 2007 9:33 PM
Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Well, I think most of the readers will recognize, from the previous posting, the root of the problem. The recruiter simply “went Christian” on Mr. Andrew. Sure, it was unprofessional. It was no surprise.

While serving in the military I saw the “Christian gangs” making life for the non-Christians a living hell whenever they could. Just recently, the Air Force Academy had some bad PR when these witnesses for Jesus were caught beating the Jewish airmen...rather severely. The Christian leadership at the Academy did their best to cover it up, make excuses, blame the Jews, etc.

The Christian covenant does require that they “put to death” those that preach another religion, witches, gay men ...among others. They supposedly have limits on them, as they must “obey the laws of man.” Not that this helped Mathew Shepard crucified on a fence in Wyoming, beaten to a pulp and left to die slowly. There are many, many others that do not make the headlines...every day.

Their hatred, bigotry and intolerance are inherent in their covenant. Why did god set them up with this? Who knows, maybe god had to do something with his “special” children...so taking them out of the circle of life and placing them into warehouses (heaven and hell) was about all that was left to him so his first children could continue his work in this creation. We all know of those that cannot make it in the “mainstream.” There seems little point in constantly forcing a mentally challenged individual to take calculus. No matter how many times you send them, and no matter how hard they try or how much they suffer, they will never get it. Through Jesus, god must have recognized this “spiritual disability” in some of his children and came up with this solution. The bible is a covenant (a contract) to those that can accept these terms, and a warning to the rest of us as to their true natures. They are not meant to carry on the work. This cycle of life is merely a waiting room for them. They are merely passing through...and like a gaggle of destructive 3 year olds, they leave quite a mess behind for the rest of us to clean up.

It is a shame that a Native American has abandoned a spiritual tradition that is older than Adam and Eve, who were created just 5765 (approx.) years ago according to the Judaic calendar. When god was creating the origination of the Semites (Adam and Lilith...I bet you thought Eve was the first Semite female), the Native Americans had been here for tens of thousands of years already. The same holds true for the Celts, Nords, Aboriginal Australians, Chinese...the list goes on. I have noticed that the Native American spiritual traditions are dead or dying. Tribal councils are vacating their two-spirit traditions and denying marriages to their two-spirit members. I give it another generation before these deeper spiritual traditions are gone forever. They will just be white people with a different colored skin...their souls long gone.

The only way to change the current situation is to realize who these people actually are, and see through the current “PC-ization” of Christianity. It is intolerant, and intended to be that way through gods will. We non-Christians need to keep them separate from the rest of us, and ensure that their “laws” are not shoved down our throats, or we may see a situation similar to that created by them in Germany in the 1930's and 1940's. If you want to see a modern version of a Christian state, grab a history book and read up on the period between 1930 and 1946. Or even better, the recent Terry Schiavo insanity where the Christian congresses of Florida and the US raced to create special laws to force their Christian beliefs on a private situation. KEEP THEM OUT OF POWER. ONE SHOULD NOT LET THE INMATES RUN THE ASYLUM.
