Surprise, surprise. The NYPD infiltrated non-violent groups like the Billionaires For Bush and the Men (and Women) in Black Bloc during the Republican National Convention.

I've read various media reports about spying before the RNC, but the idea that the Johnny Cash demo was infiltrated by undercover police officers cracks me up. Our tax dollars at work, eh? My previous blog photograph, the one with the slick-backed hair and the curled lip, was taken just before I left for the Man in Black protest at Sotheby's.

Ironically, one of the best things about that particular protest was that that the rank-and-file uniformed cops that I met were Johnny Cash fans.

We protesters were in this sort of metal livestock pen. It was shaped like a long peninsula parallel to the main auction building. I was up at the front. Since the enclosure was narrow at the tip, I was basically standing as close to the cops as I was to most of the other protesters. Granted, I was fenced in, and they were free, with their plastic handcuffs dangling conspicuously from their belts and helicopters flying overhead. Still, the uniformed cops I met seemed to actually be enjoying the music that Man In Black protesters were supplying. They were trying to keep that police officer impassive expression going, but I could tell they were suppressing grins. So, I started chatting with them. Turned out, the guys on the other side of the fence were big fans. I wonder if they knew that the NYPD had undercover operatives monitoring us.

Here's another picture from RNCweeps-week. This one was taken before the Billionaires for Bush croquet party on the Great Lawn of Central Park.

The spying was to excellent effect: the cops had a pretty good idea who to arrest, or cage in, in order to cripple the demonstrations. That WAS the plan, after all.

I actually think much of the repression since the Battle in Seattle is to prevent the cops being humiliated as they were there. (They lost their court case big, too - as after other demonstrations.) Unfortunately, a given tactic (such as blocking the doors) only works well once, and figuring out new ones just isn't all that easy.

You're surprised that the cops are Johnny Cash fans? Who isn't?

... because the pigs need to watch us all just in case someone somewhere decides to plan something at some point that might possibly result in some small level of violence.

After all... it could cause a riot... you know... like the pigs cause by using their "non-lethal" weapons (like the one that killed Victoria Snellgrove) to make people stampede out of the area.

But I supposed its all justified after Seattle... what with those poor poor broken windows. We can NEVER let a crime like that happen again! Don't you know.. all windows have a right to life! Each one is unique irreplacable!

... or maybe cities shouldn't get their advice on how to handle security and what and who to look for from a man (did security for WTO meetings, DNC, RNC, etc...) who tried to claim a group of protestors were going to use a few cans of paint thinner as chemical weapons (nevermind that they were actually being used in the painting of puppets, signs, etc..) and that they had massive amounts of pepper spray.. when in fact what they had was just plain old black pepper... that had been used in making soup for the folks working on all those protest materials... which were, of course, confiscated and destroyed by the pigs.

More and more my country is beginning to look like a later day version of the Nixon ERA . Politization of the Justice Department and FBI , Infiltration of so called radical groups .

If you are not outaged than you are not paying attention .
