A few days ago, after fellow Minnesota Monitor reporter Abdi Aynte broke the story of the lawsuit being filed by the so-called "flying imams" who were kicked off a USAirways flight in Minneapolis last November, we got a curious response to our press email on the topic. Michael Savage, the third-rated talkshow host, sent a personal email to our managing editor. It said, simply:

"You and they should be deported for taking advantage of this great nation."

Huh? Deported for being a journalist? A confirmation from Savage's producer and series of blog posts and releases followed, I discussed it on Air America Minnesota last night, and Abdi wrote a nice rebuttal to Savage, in which he pointed out that he's a legal resident, a refugee from Somalia, who came to the U.S. in 2000, learned English and found a job:

Since coming to this country barely six years ago, I have done all the right things. I secured a job to support myself and my family back home, all the while attending school to study what I've always dreamed of doing: telling people's stories.

Savage -- as you recall -- is the radio host who advocated "kill[ing] 100 million Muslims," said Muslims are "nonhumans," and suggested an "outright ban on Muslim immigration."

Proof enough this probably isn't the last we'll hear from Michael Savage.

Just because Michael Savage has a radio show doesn't make his incohesive rants newsworthy. It's like saying the tin-hat guy on the subway just announced the end of the world. It's just not news.

All that email amounts to is hate mail from some frenzied lunatic in an asylum that is suddenly clearing out. He's not relevant. He's not influential. You can reach more people with a blog, and we all know anybody can get one of those.

Michael Savage is a kook. The only thing that can legitimize him is re-broadcasting his message to help him achieve his goal of raising all of reasonable America's cockles.

Maybe it's "manufactured" - but like it or not, people like Savage have a sizeable audience (that does not correspond to those you can reach with a blog), so their attitudes do matter. He's trying to suppress freedom of the press, and efforts to discredit him are worthwhile.

If you think he matters, say in Wisconsin, GO AFTER THE ADVERTISERS. If they feel a pinch, he goes off the air. Perfectly legal, and a direct result of private businesses controlling our airwaves. In this case, it's just good social hygiene: hate-mongers poison the atmosphere, and sometimes prepare the ground for a fascist takeover.

is alledged to even had homosexual fixations with Gingsburg (including nude photos and love letters). His real name is Micheal Weiner and he seems to fit the stereotype of a self-loathing Jew, coupled with repressed homosexual inclinations. Thusly he projects his hatred onto those who he secretly admires and lusts over. This is a man who apparently spend years semi-naked on isolated Pacific islands collecting plant specimens for his books on homoepathy and herbal healings and exchanged homoerotic coorespondence with poets such as Ginsburg. Has studied at Berkley and other places and seems to fit every stereotype he 'rants' against when he is in is alter-ego "Michael Savage". Pay him no mind. He is likely mentally disturbed and is simply using his alter-ego to help repress his desires.

This asswipe gets approx 8.5 million similar idiot to tune into his racist, homophobic, violent-inducing tripe EVERY freakin' week.

Remember that little fact the next time you step into a voting booth and wonder why, despite all you think you're doing to make this a better country and a better world, it just doesn't seem to work! The person in the voting booth on either side of you probably tunes in to hear his asshole at least once a week!

Endless Racism

Racism and phony religiosity are rampant from the right wing nutjobs. From the subtle racism of Tim Russert to the attack dog racism of Savage, Coulter, O'Reilly, Hannity. Ashcroft, Gonzales et.al. But the hate coming from the right actually encompasses all of us on the left and center. It is amazing to me that my church the Catholic Church is part of this. But then many if not most Catholics have been a 'look down on others' group starting with the Jews and the Catholic view that they killed Christ. It's all still alive and well, in the US of A, and rabid/rampant even more than ever. Religion has been unleashed on us by Pope John Paul II and his alliance between the Catholic Church and the Republican Party starting back in the days of Reagan and continuing to this very day.
As a Catholic, I monitor this conflation of my religion and the Republican Party politics of destruction and unending war for profit. I will continue monitoring this wretched situation until it stops or we drive it underground where it will flail around, impotent. Will it ever stop, I sincerely doubt it.
And I am deeply embarrased and ashamed that my religion would behave this way. I apologize to blacks and jews and to everyone harmed by the Catholic religion once more run amuck just as it did when it endorsed Hitler and the Nazi Party before WWI which led to WWII and the Holocaust which now has given rise to the Neocons and their Holocaust in the ME.
That is the reason Jesus and our cherished US Constitution forbid the merging of church and state. Amen and
PRAY FOR PEACE
Civil war in the US may be necessary to stop the horrible state of affairs that the US has become. Otherwise we will become a "Totaltarian Republican Fascist Theocracy". And we can see what that has led to among those few but violent Islamic extremists/fundamentalists.
Religious fundamentalism/extremism must not be allowed to take over in the USA otherwise we are no better than the Nazis and the other extremist cults we have seen over time.
Stop religious fundamentalism or it will consume us all.
