Fox News: 'McCain's TV Commercials Contain ... Out-Right Lies'

Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) went to the floor of the Senate on Tuesday and said something I really admire. I respect her words because she made a statement that falls, for some incredibly dumb reason, right into that category of words we dare not speak.

"In truth, we are fighting a war with no cause," said the Washington Senator.

Those are not easy words to say in a political environment where most Republicans will use them to say you're sleeping with Osama bin Laden and that you obviously love the terrorists, but Murray is right -- as was Barack Obama (D-IL) when he "slipped" and made the true statement that the needless troop deaths in Iraq are a waste.

I'm hopeful that by the time Murray runs for reelection in 2010, those words will make her look thoughtful and prescient and not be a truth that her Republican opponent can use to smear her good name.

Murray made the speech on the Senate floor earlier this week when she addressed the subject of funding for mental-health care for troops returning from Iraq and Afghanistan and the extent to which the White House and Republican party all sport "support the troops" ribbons on their SUVs but have done nothing but lie them into war and hang them out to dry if they make it home.

Indeed, as Murray points out, the Bush administration has seen many reports over the years highlighting bad conditions in Veterans' medical care facilities and have shown that their pro-troop rhetoric doesn't extend to actually doing anything to help them.

"With minimal amounts of sleep, our service men and women work longer days than you and I can imagine. They see things none of us should ever witness: bodies blown to pieces, mutilation, the blood of their fellow soldiers on the streets of a country we have no place being," said Murray on Tuesday. "All of this is for a war we were misled into supporting. There were no weapons of mass destruction, Saddam Hussein was never connected to al Qaeda, and nobody can say we are spreading democracy to Iraq today."

"In truth, we are fighting a war with no cause."

And Murray was clear in laying the blame right at the doorstep of George W. Bush, who not only took our country into a needless war, but has resisted every attempt by Democrats to rescue our troops from this quagmire, while his Republican attack dogs have impugned the courage and patriotism of those who have tried.

"As Americans across this country -- but especially Senators -- it is our solemn duty, as those who have not seen the horrors of battle, to care for those who have," said Murray. "Even more so, as the one who sent Americans to Iraq, it is the duty of the President. Providing mental health care for our children falls under this duty -- a duty that, sadly, this President has failed to fulfill."

The three-term Washington Senator also took the time to rebuke the other side of the aisle, taking Republicans to task for doing nothing to truly support the troops while providing massive cover for Bush on the Iraq war during the previous, do-nothing Congress.

Here's Murray:

"I came to the floor this morning to remind my colleagues -- my Republican colleagues and this President -- actions speak louder than words. Talk does not improve the quality of the living conditions, and it doesn't make adequate mental health care available. Talk is cheap. Eventually, after a lot of talk and no action, words catch up with you. That is what we are seeing today. The Bush administration says they have provided for our active-duty warriors and our Veterans, but story after story, report after report proves otherwise.

"Unfortunately, it is pretty clear to all of us now that from enlistment to retirement, this administration has failed our troops. It is time for us to take action. I look forward to working with all of my colleagues on this floor to have action and not just words. I don't want to see report after report, all this year long and a year from now, stories that continue. We have a responsibility, when we send men and women overseas to fight for us, that we are on this floor fighting for them."
Murray ended her speech by making sure that Democrats understand they too have a responsibility -- especially now holding the majority in both houses of Congress -- to speak up loudly about the situation in Iraq and to take action as the 9/11 Commission recommendations are debated this week.

"I call on all of my colleagues to step up at every step of the way as we approve bill after bill, supplemental budgets, authorization bills, to stand up and speak out for our troops and no longer ignore the reality of this war."

Kudos to Senator Murray for having the guts to speak hard words that, for whatever pathetic reason, seem to challenge the courage of people on both sides of the political aisle. Lives are being wasted and this is indeed a war with no cause whatsoever.

And although Patty Murray will undoubtedly be attacked for those words, it's refreshing to hear someone in Washington speak that reality.

So what is the wonderful Patty Murray doing to END this "war without a cause"?

Soon, she will have a chance to vote on George W. Bush's request for another $100 billion for his "war without a cause", and how will Sen. Murray vote?

This isn't encouraging:
"as we approve bill after bill, supplemental budgets, authorization bills ... stand up and speak out for our troops and no longer ignore the reality of this war."

So she's going to approve the "supplemental budget" (that's the $100 billion) but at the same time she's going to "speak out for our troops."

As she says, actions speak louder than words...

Thank you Senator Murray. You have been a long time freind of veterans. Now can or will anyone in Congress take action with teath?

It boggles my mind that congress wont start an impeachment hearing. Yes I understand that the Democrats in the Senate could not see this through without a large number of Republicans changing sides however there is another way of looking at this.

1. Since the Dems have a clear majority in the house they can vote to start impeachment proceedings. Which means they can rightfully start supeoning neo-cons and bring their dirty laundry out in the open. This would hurt incumbent Republicans caught up in the investigation. After Ney,DeLay and Abramof scandals the Repub's are already hurting. And oh yeah there's an election in 2008. Were the Dems to stretch the investigation out into 2008 any Repubs running for office would take collateral damage.(Although I would prefer it if Bush/Cheney were removed from office NOW)

2. Once the proceedings reach the Senate and the Repubs block it - the Dems could now go on the PR offensive against the chicken-hawks Repub's making them defend their stand to the public.

3. Since the Dems seem to fearful to take action against the Iraq war the impeachment proceedings would divert the media from that fact. (Although I still think BushCo need removed like yesterday)

4. If by some miracle the Senate Repub's vote for the impeachment then Bush and Co would be out of office and we could get our troops out of Iraq.

5. Our standing in the world would be elevated (how could it get any lower) because other nations would see that not all Americans are ego maniacs that don't believe they made any mistakes.

Seems like a win/win situation to me.

She'll look better in a burka. It's painfully obvious that Patty is either intellectually deficient or desirous to convert to Islam. Stating that we have no reason to fight this war is at the very least one of the most foolish statements she's made (and she has made more than her share already). Would she to look long term she'd know that this is and has been for awhile a clash of civilizations between Islam and everyone else. Ignoring this obvious fact puts this country and the west in mortal peril. Iraq and Afghanistan have become the battlegrounds for our right not to be subjugated by Islamic facism. Hopefully her constituents will see by the time she next comes up for election that she is a danger to herself and others and will force retirement upon her. I still think she'd look better in a burka cause she ain't easy on the eyes.

I applaud Patty, but I always have to laugh whenever one of the über classes slime on the "we were misled" crap. Look, if more than 8 million of us regular working stiffs weren't misled or fooled by the blatant and painfully obvious lies the asshats in the conservogoon camp were bludgeoning the nation with, there is no excuse for the bourgeoise to cry foul after they gave away the farm for no good reason.

Tell the real truth Bob, if you have the balls. Y'all who wanted war got what you wanted because YOU WANTED IT. You CHOSE to be misled. You were too SCARED of enduring what the rest of us who weren't stoopid asshat innorant 'Merkaans were being put through. YOU caved in and knuckled under the bulldozer of the FASCISTS. PERIOD. No more excuses.

Actions do speak louder than words: non-binding "resolution" against escalation, reauthorizing the funding for continuing the war without a cause in perpetuity, unfunding the VA and other vet-health care, refusing to launch investigations or even put impeachment and criminal charges on the table to hold those responsible accountable. Actions of COWARDS.

Meanwhile while all you asshat patriots in Congress were shouting "support the troops" the day of the illegal invasion of Iraq, my wife and kids were run off the road by two flag-bearing "patriots" shouting "die, peaceniks die," and other women along the Pacific Rim were treated to similar abuse by white males hot for war but who were too COWARDLY to go fight the war they lusted so hard after.

Actions are EVERYTHING. Time for the patriots after the fact to put up and shut up. Patty, your party owes every soldier a trip home first class and your Senatorial healthcare plan fro the rest of their lives for the SHIT you MADE them endure. Your party owes every American who was against this war tax relief for the SHIT you FORCED us to pay for against our will. Your party OWES us an impeachment and criminal charges against Bush and every single COWARD who was so damned hot for a war other people's kids had to fight. You OWE the American people a god damned witchhunt for every damned Republikaaner fascist in government. Not one more day should pass until these criminal asshats are rotting in jail, jails they built and profited from.

Actions....

She STILL doesn't understand that this war was and is being fought to occupy Iraq in order to force Iraq to open it's oil industry to foreign investments and in the long term, to protect said investment?
Is it to be believed that she or anyone in the Congress doesn't know that?

we could bring the tropps home . Let those who support this war fight it! The Army is letting criminals enlist why not these guys? Of course don't come crying to us if your injured over there. You did nothing to insure our troops were really supported. We'll spend the money saved to implement the 911 commissions suggestions to protect our country. Oh by the way, were not paying you! The Oil companys can cut you a check if they want to.

When the Demos take the White House AND have a majority in Congress in 2008, then they will be the ones that have to figure out how to pay for the mess that the Village Idiot and the Repubs have left. By "pay" I mean both in money, damage control, and issues like what to do with all the damaged soldiers coming back from fighting in Bush's Folly.

Once again, as happened after the Reagan years, the Demos have to pay for the excesses of the Repubs.
