This is from a press release:

Kucinich Introduces HR 1234 To Immediately End the U.S. Occupation of Iraq

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Feb. 28) - Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) introduced HR 1234, a bill to immediately end the United States occupation of Iraq, in the House of Representatives today.

"This is the plan that will get our troops home the fastest. It is workable and achieves the goals of ending the war and enabling our troops to come home," Kucinich said.

HR 1234 is a plan for the United States to use existing money to bring the troops and necessary equipment home and transition to an international security and peacekeeping force.

"I drafted this with expert advice from those involved in international peacekeeping missions, the United Nations and the U.S. military," Kucinich said.

Kucinich first introduced a withdrawal plan from Iraq three years ago when he proposed that the United States hand the United Nations control of Iraq, including its oil resources and contracts for rebuilding.

"I have given more than 140 speeches on the floor of the House of Representatives, speaking out against this war. I have been one of the most active and vocal Members of Congress on this issue," Kucinich said.

Kucinich led the effort to challenge the Administration's war in Iraq in 2002. In advance of the Iraq war resolution in Congress, he organized 126 Democrats, two-thirds of the House Democratic Caucus, to vote against the resolution. He has constantly challenged the Administration's war against Iraq.

Kucinich has been circulating the plan with Members of Congress for two months and recently had it put in legislative form. He will be speaking to Members of Congress to gain support for the bill in the coming weeks and months.

Joshua here ...

Obviously, this will go nowhere fast. But isn't there something almost surreal about living in an ostensible democracy in which a piece of legislation favored by the majority of Americans is considered to be on the "fringe."

In one word, yes. However, as you point out, it is ostensibly, not actually, a democracy that we live in.

Echoes of history...

Barry Goldwater was a certified lunatic who wanted to use nuclear weapons in Vietnam, and lost the race for the Presidency in a landslide.

George McGovern was right about Vietnam, and also lost his race for the Presidency in a landslide.

Now: which candidate is celebrated by his own party, and which losing campaign is widely credited with the birth of the political movement underlying said party? Hint: it's not McGovern.

What's the parallel with Kucinich? Like McGovern, he's right -- and unelectable. And who is Goldwater''s counterpart? A Republican who is totally wrong about the current Vietnam, but totally electable? Too many to choose from, I'd say...

I don't blame the public for any of this. First I blame the Democrats, who never have the guts to celebrate their own real heroes, and I blame the media, who should be run out of town for daring to tell us who we can and cannot elect as President.

I wrote off Hillary a long time ago, and Edwards' recent refusal to respond to the question about Israel's nuclear weapons eliminated him. Right now, I would vote for Kucinich or, possibly, Dodd. If neither wins the Democratic Party nomination, I will vote for the Green Party candidate. I am tired of throwing my vote away on someone who can aupposedly "win", from now on I will vote for the person I think most deserves to be President!

You have repeated a lie that is heard so often, everyone believes it without question: that Dennis Kucinich is "unelectable." Ask anyone anywhere: if they have ever heard his name, they will say he is unelectable. It is not even up for discussion; it is considered a fact. WHO DECIDED THAT WAS A FACT? I don't know, but I know YOU AND ALL THE OTHERS ARE REPEATING IT AND NOW IT IS CONSIDERED TO BE TRUTH. The republicans have mastered this art -- repeat a lie often enough and it becomes truth to the masses. You have just joined in their game. Damn It All!

I have participated in many surveys from numerous sources as to the presidential candidates recently. Only one of the surveys even included Dennis' name. They asked only about the others -- rate them, who would you vote for, etc. This is part of the same corruption that you are perpetuating, that is, lies and just simple exclusion.

I HAVE HAD ENOUGH OF THIS!!!! IF THE LIBERAL MEDIA (ALTERNET) IS NOT FREE-THINKING, THEN WHO THE F**K IS?????

It is wrong to call Kucinich unelectable. He is a progressive congressman from a district that is composed of working class Reagan Democrats. He wins there despite attacks from the corporate media because despite all the propaganda, people still respond to someone who has answers. Think about it - despite a multi-billion dollar push by the corporate media to sell the war, the majority of people have rejected it. We need to stop trying to second guess the numbers and start getting behind our cause and our candidate 100%. It is so easy to sit back and echo the pundits, and enjoy the sound of your own voice making you sound so reasonable and so smart. But you are wrong. Gandhi said "Be the change you wish to see in the world". If you want the world to be less cynical, start with yourself.

Let's Experiment with Media Anointing
Posted by: peachmcd on Mar 1, 2007 5:50 AM

The media anointing process began as ridiculously early as the Christmas decorations showing up before Halloween. The primaries are, at this point, considered an afterthought. The actual 'primary' process is conducted in the media, which decide which candidates are 'electable' and then tell us only about them. The track record of the media choosing Democratic candidates for me to vote for is abysmal, and I now mistrust the ability of any Democrat the media makes its darling to actually get elected President. I want to know who's buying the 'gas' for Obama's bandwagon.

Kucinich's positions, integrity, and experience make him the natural choice of any progressive voter.

Hey Alternet, why not try this experiment: what happens if you actually DO "all Dennis, all day" for a week or so? Run a paeon to his amazing, self-sacrificing, principled stand against corporate pressure in Cleveland, and inform readers about his return to political office when citizens learned the hard way that Dennis had it right all along. Do a lead on the 'unexpected transformation' of the race as voters hear about Kucinich's positions and vow to vote their hearts in the primary, no matter what pundits say. Remind voters about his daily efforts against this immoral war from the beginning, when an anti-war position took major cojones. Print transcribes of his speeches, and talk to folks who have witnessed first-hand how inspiring this small man actually is. Make an Obama-smackin' hero out of Dennis for a week or so, and make a big story out of the 'surprising' shift in poll numbers and contributions. Anoint Dennis as 'the dark horse coming up on the rail'. Just to see what happens. What the heck? Why not?

I triple dare ya.

Dennis is going to have a huge impact on our nation regardless of his Presidential bid. We finally have someone with intelligence in charge of our drug policy. The ignorance we have been subjected to for 70 years has ended. Dennis Kucinich is awesome! Kaneh bosm!

living in an ostensible democracy in which a piece of legislation

As has been said times many ways we don't live in a Democracy, ostensible or otherwise. We live in a Republic. In a Democracy we could substitute a computer for our Senators and Representatives. Unbridled Democracy is as bad, or worse, than the unbridled corporate rule we have now.

The function of the Congress is to consider the will of the people and to use their best judgment, with the aid of expert advisers, as to whether it should be carried out and how to do it. If they refuse to do the people's will it's up to them to explain why they didn't. If their explanation isn't satisfactory they get voted out in the next election.

The sensible way of governing is to have the people determine the platforms of both parties. Then to elect people who have the best plans to carry out the platform within the limits of the Constitution, limits of the budget, and the limits of common sense.

AT THE MOMENT KUCINICH IS A LONE VOICE SPEAKING THE TRUTH IT IS INCREDIBLY UNFORTUNATELY NO OTHER SENATORS OR CONGRESSMAN OR CONGRESSWOMEN ARE WILLING TO ADD THEIR VOICE AND TALENTS TO BRINGING THE TROOPS HOME NOW AND STOPPING THIS IMMORAL WAR .........

Surrreal is exactly what I thought. Of course Kucinich is right and has been all along, which is why he'll never get anywhere.

He may be short and lacking in charisma but he's got guts and more integrity than the entire Congress of whores. He shames them big time. Keep it up Dennis, you're a great burr under the cowards' saddles.
Personally, I believe the people of America would rather have a short unattractive guy in the presidency than a strutting cowardly asshole. Wanna bet?

Kucinich is electable; very electable and that is why the Mainstream Fraud seldom allow him to grace their airwaves.

He is the only candidate that is talking about the reality that we face; Extermination and Extinction in an all out nuclear war.

The other candidates are an assortment of hired hands and privately owned and controlled Minds, that do what the boss tells them to do.

In any head to head contest, Kucinich would definitely prevail. That is why the Mainstream media is always trying to fake that he is "Fringe."

He is the bosses greatest nightmare. He will empower the mass of the population, and maybe spare us a few billion dead in an all out nuclear war.

Oh by the way; a few billion dead in an all out nuclear war: That was and still is the plan.

As Lenin said; "The trick is to get them to collaborate in their own destruction."

We have already paid for our demise.
