Cop shooting drives Republican to threaten Bush w/ impeachment

Posted by Joshua Holland at 4:17 AM on February 9, 2007.

Joshua Holland: Oh, this is a wacky one.

If the unfortunate task of keeping tabs on the Right-wing Outrage Chamber isn't part of your routine, you may not be familiar with the story of Border Patrol agents Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean; they've become the latest great causes célèbres among wingnuts everywhere.

In a nutshell, their story goes like this. While guarding the border near El Paso, the two patrolmen saw a suspicious-looking van that later turned out to contain hundreds of pounds of weed coming in from Mexico. The driver, realizing he was in ho water, bailed out of the van and hoofed it towards the border. The two patrolmen later testified that they both looked at his hands and confirmed that he had no gun -- he was a fleeing, unarmed suspect. But that didn't stop 'em from popping off 15 shots at the guy's back. They wounded him -- shot him in the ass -- but he got over the border nonetheless. Knowing they weren't supposed to shoot at an unarmed man on the run, they collected all their shell casings and filed a false report that covered up didn't report the shooting as they were required to do.

They were caught. U.S. Attorney Johnny Sutton gave the wounded man, Osvaldo Aldrete-Davila, immunity for the drug charges in exchange for his testimony. Sutton offered the two cops 18 months in a plea deal, but Ramos and Compean rejected it and got themselves 11 and 12 years in prison, respectively, for their efforts.

Bien. A fairly typical story about bad cops getting busted -- happens all the time. In fact, it was one of five incidents of police committing serious crimes around drugs that same week.

But, as you might imagine, the Right didn't stop to reflect on the fact that the border patrolmen were convicted of breaking U.S. law, covering it up to U.S. officials, obstructing U.S. justice, etc., and instead focused on the victim's Mexican nationality, his illegal status and those Hefty bags full of ganja (which the patrolmen didn't know were in the van when they opened fire).

So the wingnuts have taken to calling Johnny Sutton an "agent of the Mexican government," demanded that Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez step into the case and generally made a big stink on right-wing talk radio, blogs and on their fake "news" sites like Townhall and WorldNetDaily. It's all gotten conflated with the rank-and-file rebellion against the Republican Party over immigration. To many on the right, the two dirty cops are "illegal immigration heroes."

What's striking is how they've expressed their displeasure over the issue, especially towards Bush. For years, the right's vilified and delegitimized their liberal opponents, suggesting that not only are their opinions not valid, but that their very existence threatens America. Now, they're doing the same thing with Bush; apparently, they're no longer able to approach a political dispute in any other way, even one within their own coalition.

An editorial in the San Diego Union-Trib described the scene …

The convictions have been sucked into the wind tunnel of the immigration debate and turned GOP hard-liners into bleeding hearts. Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Calif., wrote a resolution demanding that Bush pardon Compean and Ramos. Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, R-Calif., has called Bush a "disgrace" and someone who is "on the side of our enemies." And Rep. Brian Bilbray, R-Calif. -- who used to be a lobbyist for the Federation for American Immigration Reform, a nativist organization that wants to limit even legal immigration -- quipped that, since Bush wants amnesty for 12 million illegal immigrants, he should simply add two more names to the list.

The story took yet another turn last weekend, when one of the convicted patrolmen was beaten by fellow inmates in a Mississippi prison.

That sent Rohrbacher -- the House is hard to rank, but I'd judge him the 5th or 6th dumbest representative -- to go off the rail …

"I tell you, Mr. President, if these men -- especially after this assault -- are murdered in prison, if one of them lose their lives, there's going to be some sort of impeachment talk in Capitol Hill," he told a press conference in Washington D.C.

When Ramos and colleague Jose Compean began their sentences ... Rohrabacher said of the president for not pardoning the men, "This is the worst betrayal of American defenders I have ever seen." "It's shameful this was done by someone who is in the Republican Party," Rohrabacher added, saying Bush "obviously thinks more about his agreements with Mexico than the lives of American people and backing up his defenders."

Digg!

Mexicans... even in a border town like El Paso where much of the population is mexican-american to begin with are FAR greater a threat than rogue cops who shoot at unarmed people and then try to cover it up.

... of this story?

It's not a legitimate national story -- it's a local news piece from El Paso -- but it's gotten tons of play in the right-wing media.

I'm curious as to how many readers had heard of it before. It seems to me that not ony are the left and the right exposed to different perspectives, but in this case different hard news entirely. Is that right?

There are two negative things here-
1. They didn't kill the drug smuggler
2. They were found guilty of protecting our borders.
I think they should have been given a slap on the back and a bonus!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

..... lying under oath of the interrogators of those two guards. Not a word and I know you know about it. This was all a lie. The interrogators made up the entire story. Here is what really happened.

The Bush mafia got mad at the border patrol guys interfering with their drug running operations and decided to send a message to the border patrol guards who are generally hispanic to threaten and intimidate them into letting the drugs through. That message got through loud and clear.

It was admitted under oath before a congressional committe that the interrogators lied and reported false statements not made by these guards. These guards have no record of such behavior. They truly were threatened by a weapon and the entry of the bullet was in fact from the side while the perp was turning to fire on them.

You guys are no different than the right... instead of finding out what really happened you reduce everything to left and right wing politics and keep the division between us going. You, of all people, should be aware of all of this, but your not and I am disappointed. You sound just like the rightwingnuts and your no different.

These men have families and got 12 years which is the sentence for manslaughter in the first degree. Now you tell me if this is appropriate??? And the drug runner got nothing but set free to run bush's drugs once again. Nice huh? You think any border guard is going to stop those drugs anymore? Not hardly..... they will let them through without a peep.

Nice job you guys.... you got manipulated..... Pathetic! No wonder our nation is in trouble.... no one cares about the country as a whole only their little petty political agendas of who is the worse pig in the trough.

I'd just loooove to see the Far Right get so agitated about this that they started their own impeach Bush movement.

I hadn't heard this story, but I'm going to spread it like a bad case of poison ivy.

We can just sit back and let them do all the "heavy lifting" and impeach the shrub themselves.

How great is that ?!

...but it's obvious how little digging you've done into this ongoing story.

First, thank you for linking to my blog. I do appreciate it, even if we don't agree.

Second, while I would definitely consider myself a "wingnut," like many regardless of their political leanings, I am neither on the left or the right. In my opinion, politicians are equally moronic on both sides of the isle. I have been a despiser of Bush since he first took office, and I have been disgusted with his reign as president ever since.

I do not believe Sutton is "an agent of the Mexican government" (I believe he is an agent of Bush) and that quoted statement is nowhere written in my blog. I'm assuming your referring to another quote by someone else, but there's no reference for the quote in your piece, so I simply wanted to make sure your readers know I didn't write that considering you link to one of my posts in the same paragraph.

I simply became interested in this story due to the severe injustice associated with it and the probability that Bush is partially responsible--something we can all rally around. Even if you don't agree with me, it is clear the punishment far outweighed any perceivable crime that might have occurred on the part of Ramos and Compean--a decade and more in federal prison.

You might want to take a look at the developing issues that are arising pertaining to the two former border patrol agents and you will discover that after all has been said, Ramos and Compean actually did everything in accordance with border patrol regulations--they did everything by the book, as they were trained to do so by the federal government and they broke no laws. If your opinion is they did something immoral, that's fine, but they didn't do anything apart from regulations.

Adverse to that, it's becoming apparent that Johnny Sutton and some on his staff are unmistakably covering up information that will help Ramos and Compean, while the DHS, notably Inspector General, Richard Skinner, have been found to be lying to congressmen and the American people concerning the case.

Add to that the two former agents were incorrectly and probably maliciously prosecuted by Sutton and his team, I hope you might look at this as something not divided down political lines--left and right, liberal and conservative--but as an injustice that needs to be corrected.

Here are some posts that shed more recent light on the story you and your readers might find interesting. Thank you for your time.

Malicious Prosecution
Government Lied

Sorry WorldNetDaily, Townhall, Friends of the Border Patrol, Prophit, wingnut bloggers: you don't OWN.

Dick Cheney and the Bush family and friends are the Owners of Number One Inc.

Everyone else in the Conservo-sphere, including employees and widows of the military, border patrol, Ramos and Compean, etc may think that the Prez and VP are their ideological Commanders-in-Chief, but they ain't. The Prez and VP cabal are just looking out for Number One Inc.

It's becoming very clear that the current and future purpose of the US Treasury is to support the Owners, and nobody else.

Adios, government pension plans. They've been shipped to Iraq in $400,000 bundles and thrown into the desert. For anyone in Number One Inc to stand there and pick it up.
