GOP tries to kill minimum wage

Posted by Bob Geiger at 12:25 PM on January 25, 2007.

Why just oppose raising it, when you can get rid of it?

Senator Wayne Allard (R-CO), evidently convinced that he was beating a dead horse by continuing his quest to ban flag-burning and discriminate against gay people, announced this month that he would not seek reelection in 2008 and the thought of having so little time left to screw the working poor from a comfy U.S. Senate seat must have just been eating him alive.

Allard, who has voted against a minimum wage increase more often than Fox News smears Barack Obama, went for broke this week and introduced a bill that would have eliminated the Federal Minimum Wage entirely and left the wage rate for the lowest-paid workers to each state.

In Kansas, this would mean that workers would revert to the state-mandated minimum wage of $2.65 per hour, which is currently superseded by the federal minimum of $5.15.

"In its current form, the bill attempts to blindly blanket the Nation with a new Federal minimum wage without regard to unique economic conditions of each individual State," said Allard in fighting the proposed $2.10 increase in the federal minimum wage. "Less Government intervention, at all levels, enables the private sector to attract, recruit, and retain the best possible employees and reward increased productivity and responsibility with higher compensation."

So, according to Allard, employees in all states should expect that the good-hearted nature of business would compensate them in a way that's fair and just -- yeah, that notion has worked out well for us in the past. He also contends that it's unfair for the federal government to mandate a whopping $7.25 per hour when those people in Kansas know damn good and well that they can support their families on just $2.65.

Fortunately, saner heads prevailed and Allard's disgusting legislation was killed, but with 28 Republican Senators voting in favor of no federal oversight of the lowest wage an American worker can be paid.

Senator Ted Kennedy (D-MA) who has long been the champion of the working poor, must have felt like slapping Allard, but was content to just publicly rebuke him.

"If we accepted the amendment of the Senator, it would effectively eliminate the minimum wage as we know it," said Kennedy in opposing Allard's bill. "We have tried to be not only the strongest economy in the world but one that is going to respect workers and workers' rights and workers' interests and workers' families. The minimum wage does not do so at the present time, but many of us will continue to battle to try to make sure it does. The Allard amendment brings us all in the opposite direction."

What's also instructive is the small number of words that it can take to move a country backwards… Allard's measure was very short and sweet and, in the following 56 words, would have amended the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938 to eliminate federal wage protection for low-income workers:

"Notwithstanding any other provision of this section, an employer shall not be required to pay an employee a wage that is greater than the minimum wage provided for by the law of the State in which the employee is employed and not less than the minimum wage in effect in that State on January 1, 2007.''.
It doesn't take much, does it?

And here's yet another point where Americans should breathe a massive sigh of relief that they had the smarts to elect a Democratic Congress in November.

Update: Here's the 28 Senators who voted yesterday to eliminate the Federal Minimum Wage.

Digg!

Two Aspects to this problem

The first is, of course they are all rethuglikkkans. And I'm sure they are all Christians, just imagine that, they call themselves christians. And if one examines the list many are Catholics, members of my religion, but ones who adhere to the Popes commands. So much for Catholic Rethugs and their values.

The other aspect of the current state of America and the world is due to the christian rethugs who have controlled every aspect of our gov't and made America into a "Totalitarian Republican Jihadist Theocracy", to quote myself.

'We the people' are powerless to stop them as Mr. Boosh is still the prez and he will do whatever he chooses to do.

The next point in my logic is the America is on the edge of the abyss of hell and brought their by the christian rethugs.

Next point is that the rethugs never go away, they will be back to wreak more havoc when the stupid american voters put them back in power, either in 2008 or 2012(which these rethug christians predict will be the end of the world/rapture) and because they believe it they WILL MAKE IT HAPPEN. Religious radical evangelical FUNDAMENTALIST Jihadists in the white southern Baptist religion and in the Catholic Church, my church but not me, will assist the rethugs into making all of this happen.

My final point is that these people can be stopped. And that is by allowing them to pass the stupid Wayne Allard legislation and reduce all americans to the low wages that Allard proposes. Once that happens all the so called phony Pro-Lifers will see what the poor already know and that is low wages and for that matter all republican strategies are anti Pro-Life because one cannot live on the rethug low wages. No income equals Pro-Death, just as do every other value at the core of the repub agenda for america.

In other words should Allards proposal or one like it such as amnesty for illegal immigrants or the NAFTA Superhighway reach fruition the rethug voters will go carzy and revolt throwing the rethugs and their crazy religious people, catholics and other FUNDAMENTALISTS who keep the rethugs in power will lose their power over us via the rethug party.

I point my finger at my fellow catholics because they are the ones who are guilty for starting this whole religious insanity that is polarizing, dividing and fracturing our country into what we have now which is that America is now actually to separate countries approaching the point where we are ready to go to war with each other and in many ways are already doing it.

So if Allarards proposal were to pass the american people who support the rethugs would finally and fully comprehend the true nature of the rethug party, Big Religion and Big Business.

Whew, and amen

PRAY FOR PEACE, pray for the demise of the aforementioned malicious groups who care nothing about people or life, but only themselves and forcing their agenda for America down the throats of us all. If those in the FUNDAMENTALIST religions want to live on two dollars an hour wages than that is what they should do, but leave me and the 200+ million americans live on family friendly wages, if we ever get them.

To those who voted for this...I'm glad to know you think business would pay us all a great wage... if only they didn't have to pay us a minimum wage..

What is the logic here? That we would be paid higher wages without a minimum wage? Ok, folks... you are asking for businesses to pay some people LESS than the minimum wage so they can pay others more. Now, you tell me.. given the pittance that is the 5.15 minimum wage.. why would anyone stay in a job paying less than that, and if someone were actually doing a bad enough job to make that lower wage (and we'll just pretend your frankly psychotic concept of universally merit-based pay sans MW would actually exist) why the hell would the company keep them around??? They would FIRE them... That would happen even in right-to-work states... which I'm sure you rich white assholes don't support, either.

but it doesn't go far enough. We also need to take away the federal funding of the war, the roads, medicare, medicade, and all the other boondongles. Revert almost everything to the States so that it become a more pure democracy. Also each State will know better what solution to their problems/needs are. (Minimum wage in NY might need to be different than S.Dakota, subsitising for crops might be good for Nebraska but not for Rhode Island, etc.) Devolve power back to the people where it should belong anyway.

These corporatist's must be driven out of our government for the betterment of society. Perhaps the minimum wage could be tied to a percentage of those who are supposed to represent us with raises in the minimum also automatic with each increase in the pay of congress. Congressional pay now stands at some $166,000. If the minimum wage was set at even one tenth of their pay it would mean an increase of $1,520 per year over the proposed $7.25 an hour. That means the difference between $15,080 per year or $16,600. A somewhat low wage still, but this would give the working family a little more breathing room to supply their families with at least the bare minimum of food, housing and utilities. If this doesn't work legislation could be introduced to roll back the pay of every member of congress. If the working poor can be forced to live at a level of what amounts to mere subsistence or existence the so-called servants of this nation could be asked to live at a much lower level of comfort than they currently enjoy. Many in congress are millionaires in their own right and in my opinion if they were truly interested in service to their country instead of personal power and ego they should forgo their pay and be true servants.

Allard loves this kind of crap. He's such an ass.

Check out the Constitution Restoration Act that keeps getting his support but, thankfully, never goes anywhere.

Allard is a monarchist, pure and simple. Frankly, this makes him a traitor to democracy... something for which he should probably be indicted, tried, and executed. At least he has been rendered almost totally impotent by the turn of events last election.

Goodbye and good riddance!

"In its current form, the bill attempts to blindly blanket the Nation with a new Federal minimum wage without regard to unique economic conditions of each individual State ..." said Senator Allard.

Had the good Senator left out the word 'blindly' I would enthusiastically agree with his statement and would strongly encourage those states with unique economic conditions to join in with CA. CT, MA, OR, RI, VT and WA in raising their minimum wage above the $7.25 per hour floor being enacted by the federal government.

Well, the minimum wage in effect in that (any) State on January 1, 2007, would be the FEDERAL minimum wage, wouldn't it? So, at a minimum even Kansas would have to maintain the Federal Minimum Wage under this "law"! I know, it's not much consolation, but it shows that this jerk doesn't know what he's doing.
