Wal-Mart has given people another reason to be up in arms about the mega-retailer. They have been accused of mislabeling products and produce as organic, when they are not.

In September The Cornucopia Institute surveyed Wal-Mart stores around the country and "discover widespread problems with signage misrepresenting nonorganic food as 'organic.'"

The Institute filed a complaint with the USDA but has found, four months later after revisiting Wal-Mart stores, that many of the deceptive signs remain. (You can see photos on their website.)

"The USDA is examining the watchdog's claims, while the Wisconsin authorities are examining Wal-Mart's practices and those of other supermarkets within the state," the Independent reported.

"If unchecked, Wal-Mart's alleged misrepresentation of organic food, along with their procurement practices, and cheapening the meaning behind the organic label, could endanger the livelihoods of many farmers and family business owners who have labored to build organics into a lucrative $16 billion a year industry," said Mark Kastel, co-director of the Wisconsin-based Institute.

Wal-Mart announced last spring that they were adding organic produce to their shelves. The move signaled a growing trend in the corporatization of organic foods that many believe will hurt small-scale organic growers.

We can now add one more on the growing list of reasons not to shop at Wal-Mart.

The evolution of the corporate horror show continues: see Poltergeist from 1982.

"You moved the cemetary, but you left the bodies behind. Didn't you? Didn't YOU?! You left the bodies behind and you only moved the headstones...YOU ONLY MOVED THE HEADSTONES!"

Thanks, Craig Nelson.

In Hilo, there is a move in the County Council to ban super-stores on the Big Island. It is meeting with a surprising amount of negative opinion. It is unfortunate that people believe the advertising and think that if it's from WalMart, it's cheaper. I only hope the WalMartization is stopped. I, personally, will not shop there, but if the parking lot is any indication, Big Islanders love the place. It comes as no surprise to me that WalMart would attempt to mislead and mislabel. When it comes to natural/organic food, it either is or it is not. I wouldn't trust corporate interests to insure that it is. I would believe that they'd tell me that it is.

Whore is the word that best fits what this type of company does. We ,males, all know how well a whore succeeds. I was just listening to the BBC & they were comparing ASDA aka Wallmart to TESCO a similar UK company. At least Tesco is a union company with benefits.Otherwise it is another corporate whore.

You know, it's great that there's ONE PLACE LEFT to get a larger portion of the truth than we as a culture are getting from Reagan's Corporate legacy. Unfortunately, there isn't enough cohesion or back bone in the culture to truly DO anything about it.
Swine like Bush et al have and are accomplishing EVERYthing they want to thus far.
They will continue to do just that regardless of what the voters want or express. And with the voting in of the latest batch of republicrats it will continue.
Iraqis will die, We'll continue kissing Israel's ass, We'll go into Iran and show them the true meaning of christ's statement to love one another even those that hate us, ( this of course will be translated by the "christian" right and Satan's twin sons Bush and Cheney. I listened to Air America yesterday. A woman was saying what a jerk Bush is and he wants to make himself into another Hugo Chavez. We know how the media has caused alot of the trouble with our government by not reporting the truth, yet this woman STILL made a comparison of a liar and coward to a man, ( Chavez), that is and has been presented to us as a despot by THE SAME CORPORATE MEDIA that licks Bush's shoes. So,... what is the point? The corporate media is STILL believed even by those who are supposed to have enough brains to know better.
A nation of sheep led by a cartel of whores, controlled by big business. Welcome to the REAL Evil Empire.
