Our country, our truck: A modest proposal

Posted by Philip Barron at 1:11 PM on January 14, 2007.

From the least likely source, a new anthem for (we hope) a new age.

In complete seriousness and in the spirit of a new beginning as embodied by the advent of our new Congress, I hereby propose that the ubiquitous John Mellencamp song in the Chevy Silverado advertisments be made our new national anthem. The tune has attracted hostility in some quarters because it's been overplayed, or perhaps because Mellencamp supposedly sold out to the Man in making this commercial ditty, or maybe because Mellencamp is a dirty hippie who opposed the war on Iraq, or just possibly because some NY Times crybaby whined because the imagery in the original ad acknowledged that American history hasn't been a trip down an unalloyed yellow brick road (gasp!).

Frankly, if both the left and the right dislike the song, it may well be worth consideration as a unifying theme. It does do something that The Star Spangled Banner does not: it speaks to our ideals. It reminds us of our goals and charges us with responsibilities, while the Francis Scott Key offering more or less revels in war. Besides - simply on its merits as a song - it's a good solid anthem that's much kinder to the throat than our current national vocal obstacle course. And not least of all, it's a hell of a lot easier to remember. After all, sports fans pretty much already know it by heart.

Imagine a stadium full of people, voices raised as one:

The dream will never leave

And some day it will come true

And it’s up to me and you

To do the best that we can do

And let the voice of freedom

Sing out through this land

This is our country

Write your congressman.

Big money goes around the world

Big money underground

Big money got a mighty voice

Big money make no sound

Big money pull a million strings

Big money hold the prize

Big money weave a mighty web

Big money draw the flies

Sometimes pushing people around

Sometimes pulling out the rug

Sometimes pushing all the buttons

Sometimes pulling out the plug

It's the power and the glory

It's a war in paradise

It's a Cinderella story

On a tumble of the dice

Big money goes around the world

Big money take a cruise

Big money leave a mighty wake

Big money leave a bruise

Big money make a million dreams

Big money spin big deals

Big money make a mighty head

Big money spin big wheels

Sometimes building ivory towers

Sometimes knocking castles down

Sometimes building you a stairway

Lock you underground

It's that old time religion

It's the kingdom they would rule

It's the fool on television

Getting paid to play the fool

Big money goes around the world

Big money give and take

Big money done a power of good

Big money make mistakes

Big money got a heavy hand

Big money take control

Big money got a mean streak

Big money got no soul...

Maybe, in the earlier cuts, they should have coupled footage of Georgie Boi giving speeches, throwing lavish balls, and laughing with footage of Abu Gharib, dead Iraqis, their children, the napalm girl running through the street in Vietnam (Look! They welcome us as liberators!), some tobacco-deaths, oil-coated seabirds, some vintage Ku Klux Klan pics, and maybe even photos of all the "evil terrorist country" leaders shaking hands with Georgie, his daddy, Rummie, and Cheney???

Now this is just a minor sampling, but there's just SO much more! Wal-Mart, McDonald's, and Exxon-Mobil would surely LOVE the product-placement (and don't worry, Halliburton is a given.)
