"Macho Dems" bad news for Democratic women?

Posted by Sarah Posner at 6:55 PM on January 7, 2007.

NY Times: Women may not cut it...

Was 2006 a bad year for Democratic women? Despite the Democrats elevating the first female Speaker of the House and offering the first viable female presidential candidate in history, in today's Times, Ryan Lizza wonders if the answer is yes.

Lizza's premise, somehow, is that the resurgence of so-called "Macho Dems" -- folks handpicked by that foul-mouthed tough guy Rahm Emanuel and that notoriously brutal boss Chuck Schumer -- is inherently incompatible with the elevation of Democratic women. What does he mean? Is there no room for tough women in a room full of tough men?

Lizza's conclusion isn't clear: is it that female candidates won't be able to match the macho now expected of Democrats, because of a bunch of veterans and cops now in their ranks? Is it that Democrats risk alienating female voters by being too tough? Or is it that the Democrats have now set impossible standards for themselves, standards that none of the Party's prospective presidential candidates can match? All of these options were offered up without much evidence to support any of them.

Why we're even having such a discussion is made evident by the perceived need of the American public to have their expectations of masculinity and femininity met in their leaders. Why can't the Democrats be portrayed as tough all around, and not just as having tough men in their ranks? Democratic women -- even the one just one heartbeat and one malfunctioning pacemaker away from the presidency -- are still locked out of the Fight Club. Why else would Nancy Pelosi -- as she revelled in the greatest moment of her professional life -- take such care to be photographed with her grandchildren? Because we must never forget that she used her ovaries for their intended purpose. That's what defines her. Not her career. So she can't get too tough, of course. If she confronts Bush on the war, she will always remind us that she's doing it for her grandchildren.

I'm not blaming Pelosi. That's the political environment in which she finds herself, one in which anyone who reads a major newspaper knows she likes Armani suits, because, of course, it matters what she wears, not what she thinks.

So I had a creepy feeling reading Lizza's piece, in part because I hate that silly macho pissing contest, where the Democrats feel they have to work so hard not to look French or worry about their hair (unless they're a woman, in which case they should worry very much about it) and drink Bud instead of latte. But also because I know that if success in Democratic politics depends on a macho test, female politicians will always face the eternal tug between flaunting their toughness while constantly tempering it with a prominent display of estrogen.

But before they go too far down that path, Democrats should avoid overplaying the macho hand. After all, the jig is up on the Republicans' phony testosterone show. From the transparently repressed White House confidant Ted Haggard to the irrepressibly horny Mark Foley, the Republicans have been exposed as the craven coddlers of their nelly bretheren, something that would never be tolerated -- much less even imagined -- by any genuine tough guy, who would've kicked both their asses before any meth could be purchased or IM sent. And even the GOP's capos have been fully emasculated: DeLay's blogging, for heaven's sake, Abramoff's in the pokey, Hastert's a mere shell of his former self (oh, well, maybe shell is a poor word choice for the hulking former wrestling coach), and Frist has had his testicles, and his presidential prospects, handed to him on a silver platter purchased with the proceeds from insider trading. (Is there a diagnosis for that, doctor?)

Digg!

The NYT is very displeased about the new populist leanings of the Dems. So they're trying to paint them as macho' because tehy're culturally conservative and economically liberal, and thus annoy the Dems' liberal feminist contributors. However, I don't see this hurting Roe v Wade or being atni-woman--and we've got a female speaker after all. All in all I don't think the new house is particulary woman-unfriendly--and they're surely better tahn the opposition.

The populism, on the other hand, is a great positive turn for the Democrats, and will bring them back to fighting for the little guy, as they shoud.

I appreciated your responding to Lizza's piece, which is a typical news item, carrying the party line about Emanuel's and Schumer's brilliance, voters responding to 'masculine energy,' and so on. Full of assumptions, like so many journalistic pieces on gender politics. I agree in spirit with your response, including your pointing out that this apparent strategy of playing up machismo will probably backfire on Democrats. I mean, didn't we learn in '04 that being inauthentic and trying to be something you're not ultimately does not work?

We the women need to let it be know what is really macho. A man that loves his children and ensures a future for them without bullying the women.A real man does not have to prove it or talk about it. He does the right thing and respects himself and all others.I know he is out there .I had one in my life. My father. He was not rich or famous but he did the hard work of living and working for his family. He was the most macho man I ever knew.

.. more anti-male sexist tripe.

Women must be accepted... men must be changed.

Guess what, ladies.. there are PLENTY of female veterans and former police. Granted most of the veterans are from the two wars in Iraq and in Afghanistan, but they are there. Making such statements as were made in this article do a great disservice to these women.

Can we cut the Macho Man crap. It's been 40 years. The fact that a mother/grandmother can also become the first woman Speaker of The House tells me that her ovaries are in good working order and she has a better than average functioning brain. It's interesting to notice that the men, Macho and otherwise, like her. They enjoy working with her. Let's just say that she is a winning combination of ingredients that work just fine. Thanks, ANNA

Right on, Sarah. Indeed, "the jig is up on the Republican's phony testosterone show." We've been led to the chopping block by a flock of bantam roosters who think they invented crowing, and the stuff in the barnyard is too deep to shovel. You're saying we are also saddled with "Macho Dems" that think women can't hold their own in a roomful of tough men? Did they have mothers?

My grandmother gave birth to 9 kids at home without a doctor and delivered twins without even a midwife. She never got far from home, but she was a whole lot tougher, fairer, and smarter than the barnyard bullies strutting their stuff who are eager to wage war as long as someone else does the fighting and pays the bills.

We're living at a time when toughness can't make up for lack of intelligence, and we need leaders who, when they find themselves in a hole, quit digging. If they give their ego-driven shovels a rest, and be open to the strength, reasoning, and problem-solving skills of women, there will be a better chance that the world will be restored.
