Somebody got a spine for Christmas!

As they prepare to take control of Congress this week and face up to campaign pledges to restore bipartisanship and openness, Democrats are planning to largely sideline Republicans from the first burst of lawmaking.

House Democrats intend to pass a raft of popular measures as part of their well-publicized plan for the first 100 hours. They include tightening ethics rules for lawmakers, raising the minimum wage, allowing more research on stem cells and cutting interest rates on student loans.

But instead of allowing Republicans to fully participate in deliberations, as promised after the Democratic victory in the Nov. 7 midterm elections, Democrats now say they will use House rules to prevent the opposition from offering alternative measures, assuring speedy passage of the bills and allowing their party to trumpet early victories.

Nancy Pelosi, the Californian who will become House speaker, and Steny H. Hoyer of Maryland, who will become majority leader, finalized the strategy over the holiday recess in a flurry of conference calls and meetings with other party leaders. A few Democrats, worried that the party would be criticized for reneging on an important pledge, argued unsuccessfully that they should grant the Republicans greater latitude when the Congress convenes on Thursday.

Ugh. Whiny babies with a loser mentality. And crappy media with intractable GOP-positive framing. The Democrats are now the majority. They've got bills ready to go that they've had ready for years which the GOP has been blocking for years. The Democrats are totally right not to bother wasting time during their "first 100 hours" perfunctorily entertaining the GOP's crap alternative proposals to legislation of which the Dems' 30+ seat majority guarantees passage anyway -- legislation, by the way, which the GOP has ignored for years, unless it was the block Democratic proposals. Fuck the GOP. They had their chance.

I don't endorse the Democrats running Congress this way ad infinitum, but to use their "first 100 hours" to pass precisely the legislation they were elected to pass without mollycoddling the suddenly pro-bipartisanship GOP? Yeah, I've got absolutely not the slightest fucking objection to that shit. Who gives a rat's patoot about some bullshit GOP alternatives to basic legislation like raising the fucking minimum wage? Not I.

We've all got a pretty good idea about where the GOP stands on this stuff already. That's why the Dems now have the majority -- and they shouldn't be afraid to use it.

Digg!

"They had their chance" is exactly right, and we're all now suffering terribly because of "chances" these moronic warprofiteering, greedy, hateful brutes took with our countryl, our economy, our workforce, our environment, our future, and our children's lives.
Some might say it's payback time for all the bullshit these bastards pulled on the Dems over the past decade, but I say what's good for the goose is now goddam good and well for the gander.
I'll take mine in a wine sauce, please.

Cut off all funding for offensive operations in Iraq and Afghanistan until Dubya cries Uncle and gets the effing message. The whole Baker Group and Gates thing was to provide political cover for a thick headed President still committed to staying the course.
Apply the financial choke chain to the G.O.P. Job #1.

How are they going to get anything that matters past the veto? Their proposals are good, but really just tinkering around the edges, essentially bipartisan stuff; to reverse the major damage Bush and the Republicans did, they'll have to reverse Bush and Cheney.

Long live President Pelosi! (Hilary won't like that, will she?)

Ending the war is another matter. The House can do that by itself, by refusing funding. Of course, that will probably precipitate a constitutional crisis and force them to impeach the bastards. How sad.

Who the hell gave Nancy Pelosi permission to take Impeachment off the table? If we are a nation of laws, we should enforce the law. Start Impeachment hearings in the house and let the hearing bring out just which laws Bush and Company violated.

Remember, the country was not in favor of impeaching Nixon until the Impeachment hearings started in the House under US Rep. Peter Rodino and the evidence started to come in. Once Rodino's committee starting gathering evidence against Nixon, poor ol' Tricky Dick's fate was sealed.

Let's have a repeat of that. Let's get a resolution of Impeachment and begin the hearings. I want to know what the Hell Bush and his thugs have been up to for the last six years, and they've hidden it so successfully with the complicity of a Republican Congress, that Impeachment hearings NOW are the only way we will ever find out.

Start the hearings. Get Pelosi and John Conyers back on board and let's have a Resolution of Impeachment to get the process started.

What in the name of hell makes you think that Pelosi and the rest are going to stop a dictator with a packed Supreme Court and a 49%+/- say in the Senate? Does anyone in their right minds think that anything is going to change or that this idiot in the White House would ever let impeachment proceed? Does anyone with half a brain think that any initiative that was not clearly defined in 2006, and even then that interferes with BushCo's plans, would ever make it into law?

Impeachment would be perfect, but we do not live in a perfect world. We live in a world that may very well come crashing down on our heads this year or early 2008, and nothing that Pelosi or anyone else in the Democratic party does will stop it. We should have stopped this Constitutional disaster in 2004 when we realized that we had been duped by our own Hitler! Instead the nation voted that monster back into office, and now Pelosi and Company will just play it safe and wait it out for another two yearsin the blythe hope that the Democrats will actually have a chance at the White House (which if they nominate that bitch Hilary is not possible)!

We do not need impeachment - we need revolution; and not just against BushCo, but against the entire system if we want our country back! Abraham Lincoln once said that a nation that is unable to change its governance by established procedures has an obligation to dismember its government, and failing that, revolt against that government. Well, folks, we have tried using established procedures in 2004, and we failed. We tried to dismember it in 2006, and we may have failed there as well. Between now and November 2008 will determine if we need to revolt, and if we do, how many of you will be able to offer support and viable change in the aftermath? LEARN, PLAN, AND ACT should be the watch words for now, because Pelosi and Company may have 100 hours without Republican Congresspeople, but not without the dictator at the other end of the street, and from all appearances they will not be David against Goliath, but rather lambs to the slaughter in the next two years.

All the of "the GOP's crap alternative proposals" (as Melissa so bluntly phrased it) have been bally-hooed for all of the YEARS they've BLOCKED real debate on these important issues.

So, GO DEMS!

(Maybe you can prove yourselves to be Democrats instead of dimwits, after all.)

I'll believe all of this when I see some serious attempts to get us out of Iraq. I'm happy they're going for it with the other very important legislation, but really, they got in because of Bush's Iraq policy and they need to get us out of there to fulfill their promise.

After the goals for the first 100 hours, there can be nothing more important than getting us out of Iraq! The choice is NOT to give Bush what he wants, or appear to be deserting the troops! That is a phoney construct and the Democrats do not have to accept it!

The Democratic Majority needs to launch a public information "Blitz" to inform the American people that the ONLY way they can get us OUT of this civil war in Iraq is to withhold funds. They then must make it clear, over and over, that if Bush does not use the money that is still unspent in the "off the books" Iraq War supplemental accounts for the direct needs of our troops and NOT to fatten Halliburton or Blackwater's profits, that it is Bush and not the Democrats who are failing our troops.

If and/or when George Bush goes to Congress for a supplemental appropriation EARMARKED for the sole purpose of getting our troops out safely, the Democrats should give it to him with as many strings attached as needed to make sure he doesn't divert it to his fat cat contractor friends.

If Pelosi and Reid can't find the balls between them to do it, I suggest they go down the street and talk to DNC Chair,Howard Dean, who was right about the war before it was politically "safe" and was trashed by the Republican Lite DLC Clinton crowd, and other candidates like Kerry, and especially Joe Lieberman, who voted for the war!

It is futile to talk about Health Care or Education or anything else until we stop pouring $3 billion per WEEK of our National Treasure down that Drain-in-the-desert aka Iraq while we are busily borrowing $ from China.

It's obvious that all the praise that's being heaped on the late President Ford for pardoning Nixon by George H.W. Bush, George W. Bush, Henry Kissinger, Dick Cheney et al reflects their wishful hope that a Democratic successor to W would do the same for George W Bush. Nixon lied about a breakin at the Democratic Party HQ at the Watergate Hotel, Clinton lied about a private, consensual sexual relationship, but Bush lied about there being a threat from Saddam that justified invading a sovreign country and executing its leader costing more American lives than the 9/11 attacks and more Iraqi innocent deaths than Saddam ever did. If ever there was a case for impeachment, Bush's actions have made it.

We need investigations, and if there is an imminent impeachment, maybe a new Democratic president should pardon Bush, making sure that W understands, as did Nixon that accepting a pardon is an admission of guilt, as Gerald Ford reminded him before the pardon.

Democrats, do your duty!

I voted for Democrats because i wanted change and an end to the war and for Bush and Cheney to be impeached and then those 2 bastards and all the neo-cons and their henchmen to be tried in a world court for war crimes and all HUNG BY THE NECK TILL DEAD. And I am against the death penalty, but for them I want retribution. They don't deserve to live. Even when dead I don't think the devil wants them on his dungpile.

I have spent thousands of hours working toward getting the Bush Mafia out of Washington, including working on many issues with Nancy Pelosi's office. I cannot understand why she would entertain the idea that impeachment is off the table, when everyone has worked so hard toward getting this Crime Boss packed off to jail! What does it take to find an honest politician in this country these days? Is it possible to even consider that a politician could possibly tell the truth about any issue? I'm beginning to believe that ALL politicians are corrupt and that we need to actively work toward establishing a third party that will make a stand on priciples and not sell out before the game has even started! What is the difference between a Republican and a Democrat in this historical time period? The color of their wallet!

I agree with the level of anger in the article, but I disagree that it's OK to go back on the earlier pledge of involving the GOP. I'd make sure they had input to the point of outlining exactly why they were against the legislation. I would make sure the media knew those reasons as well. Then... I'd vote through the bills we need to start straightening things out in DC.

Because the Republicans screwed the Dems over when they got control doesn't make that mode of behavior right or correct. In fact, that's what got us to where we are today - lack of balance.

After "First 100 Hours":
1) Cut funding for military in Iraq (then work with UN to assist),
2) Put impeachment of Bush and Cheney back on table,
3) Move on alternative energy technologies and conservation,
4) Move on universal health care,
5) Re-regulate corporations such that they must be socially and environmentally responsible and accountable.

CONGRESS MUST RESCIND THE AUTHORIZATION TO USE FORCE!!
Posted by: xbj on Jan 8, 2007 6:24 AM
Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Any constitutional law experts out there? Can't Congress rescind the authorization to use force? Get a team of lawyers to determine that CONGRESS WAS LIED TO in the first place and that THE ORIGINAL AUTHORIZATION WAS OBTAINED UNDER FALSE PRETENSES.

Therby making it NULL AND VOID. LEGALLY.

This would effectively KILL not only THE SURGE, but ALSO KILL ANY NUKING OF IRAN WITHOUT CONGRESS GIVING FUTURE APPROVAL.

IF THIS CAN BE DONE, IT MUST BE DONE A.S.A.P.

Bush could NO LONGER sneak attack Iran (in a phony retaliation against a flase flag attack against American or Canadian interests carried out by Israel) IF THIS IS CARRIED OUT.

Not only that, it would stop the surge DEAD IN ITS TRACKS WITHOUT withdrawing funding or support for current troops.

It could also be seen as a first step toward impeachment and forcing the White House War Pigs to BRING HOME THE TROOPS.

So... I can't use cusswords, or post anything against homosexuals, or personally attack you.

Seems to me you use about every cuss-word known to mankind AND you personally attack those you do not agree with... what a lady, albeit, a lady with two faces... bi-polar, are we???

Only reading a few of the posts, I see it's a-okay to say lovely stuff about gayball girlymen, and Rosie types, so I guess I must choose my words carefully... being retired from the United States Army that will be difficult considering who I am addressing.

Hmmm... how do I put this gentlemanly... How about, you are one nasty-mouthed, anti-Christian, screwed up dork (don't take 'dork' personally, my daughter calls me that [with love] lotsnlots), with obvious lesbian tendencies? That work for you?

You are one foul-mouthed gal, Melissa, and seeing your picture on O'Rielly, you look pretty evil as well.

With that, I will say, you know nothing of God or Jesus... few do, or at least few study the Word, however, God detests queers and without doubt, gayballs are not born, rather, addicted to their lusts (Romans 1:27), women with women and men with men... pretty disgusting when one considers a male rear-ending another male then chomping down on one another's unit... whoa!

Attacking Christians the way you do, you have no clue your eternity, but I will hope one day you will learn before it's ever too late.
