John Aravosis's brother just got a very disturbing phone call from Uncle Sam:

Seriously. Dad took the call. The person on the other end wanted to talk to my 9 year old nephew. Dad asked why. Because they wanted him to consider enlisting in the reserves or the National Guard. Dad said there's only one problem, the kid is 9. Person on the other end said oh, well I should probably remove his name from our lists. They said that my nephew probably signed up for something online and that's why they called.

Yeah, sure.
The reassuring explanation is that they're totally incompetent. The explanation that's too horrifying to contemplate is that they're planning to stay in Iraq until the kid is legal.

That's the dumbest thing I ever heard. It's was an error.

The problem with blogs is when bloggers have nothing to say, they get worked up by the most absurd and pointless stuff so they have something to write about.

...I recall that about ten years ago, or so (During the Gulf War?), there was a story in the news of another kid getting recruited by the military. It seems that the kid (in this other case) entered a contest at a national ice cream chain's local franchise - using a made-up name but his real address - and soon received a call from recruiter's seeking enlistment of the non-existent youth. The fact that he had made up the name was evidence that the military was obtaining lists from far flung sources - including a certain ice cream shop renowned for its more than 30 flavors.

At the other end of the spectrum, I have a friend, a 74-year-old nurse, who got a letter from the Army to join!!
