Mr Bush was expected to remind his audience last night of his steadfast support for Israel. Last month the White House published a 26-page glossy pamphlet entitled, "George W. Bush - A Friend of the American Jewish Community".

The Republican Jewish Coalition hosted an event for roughly 1,500 people on Monday, which featured people such as Tom DeLay, the conservative Christian congressman from Texas who received a standing ovation, as well as the one Jewish Republican in the House, Eric Cantor, and the two Jewish Republicans in the Senate, Norm Coleman and Arlen Specter.

The day before, a group of Jewish and pro-Israel groups including the formidable American-Israel Public Affairs Committee, held an event for 2,000 people. Morris W. Offit, the UJA Federation of New York president, was reported to have introduced Ken Mehlman, the Bush-Cheney campaign chairman, by saying: "We are honoured that President Bush's campaign is being managed by one of us."

Remember the neocons? A lot of them were goyim, but one of their goals was to help Israel out (even if this hasn't actually happened) The irony is that the Iraq War may well have been an honest-to-G_d Jewish conspiracy that was throughly opposed by the majority of American Jews, who are liberal and thus opposed the war!

There have been quite a few ethnic Jews who were important in the conservative movement, particularly its more libertarian segments. Barry Goldwater was half-Jewish, Milton Friedman was a very important libertarian economist, even Ayn Rand was born Alice Rosenbaum. Mike Medved? Ken Mehlman?

My personal experience is that I've met plenty of Jewish libertarian nerds. Libertarianism, with its deemphasis on interpersonal bonds, tends to attract nerdy types, and Jews tend to have more than their fair share of nerdy types as a result of the cultural emphasis on scholarship. (there are, of course, plenty of liberal and conservative nerds as well.)

(This is the sort of irony that tends to escape the neo-Nazi crowd, who use the links of the neocons to the Likud crowd to claim that the Iraq War was the Jews' response to being bored after staging 9/11.)

the Media, Banking, war on Christmas, Hollywood-control, insurance companies, and eating Christian Babies on their 'sabbath': when will the jews stop the madness! When will people wake up to the jewish cabal that is controlling all major banks, institutions, media, secret governments, and is bent on the destruction of all the 'goyim'? At least Alternet recognises the usurious and nefarious meddling of the evil jewish race.

I recall when one had to read radical right wing literature to learn about the Jewish control of international banking and all subsidiaries including governments everywhere. Now it seems important to progressives to expose it. I wonder if it will make any more difference now than it did with the Right 30 years ago. Certainly the anti semite response has not changed. We'll see what happens when Arabs impose the new one state solution in Palestine.

There is no question that Jews have a tendency to vote with Democrats (asides from Orthodox Jews). This is perfectly in keeping with how the Jewish diaspora has acted throughout it's history. The majority of Jews have always embraced policies and politicians that undermine their best interests. Sometimes to the extremes that lead to tragedy and destruction. Perhaps I'll see a day when they realize that it is in their long term interests to embrace more conservative principles.

No one is more qualified to counter the racist venom spewed forth by Zionism that seeks to use Judaism as a convenient decoy. I suspect that as many Jews are true adherents of Zionism as vote Republican.
One has only to recall that rabbi Hillel, one of the earliest and most venerable Judaic thinkers, made this famous statement in the time of king Herod: "That which is hateful to you, do not do to your fellow. That is the whole Torah; the rest is a commentary."
You don't hear that quoted by the current generation of assorted Likudniks and Jewish neocons, who treat bloodshed as a healthy sport, so long as it does not directly involve their precious asses.
