New Dem to Bush: None of your beeswax

One of the Senate's newest members took steps to avoid Bush recently, but the wily prez is apparently smarter than he's given credit for being:

At a recent White House reception for freshman members of Congress, Virginia's newest senator tried to avoid President Bush. Democrat James Webb declined to stand in a presidential receiving line or to have his picture taken with the man he had often criticized on the stump this fall. But it wasn't long before Bush found him.

"How's your boy?" Bush asked, referring to Webb's son, a Marine serving in Iraq.

"I'd like to get them out of Iraq, Mr. President," Webb responded, echoing a campaign theme.

"That's not what I asked you," Bush said. "How's your boy?"

"That's between me and my boy, Mr. President," Webb said coldly, ending the conversation on the State Floor of the East Wing of the White House.

Apparently, this episode made him want to slug the commander-in-chief.

Before you break out the bubbly and start high-fiving, it's good to remember that this brand of maverick-dom goes both ways. Webb, first of all, is no liberal. Far from it.

While many were dissing his opponent George Allen's legislative swan song, legalizing the possession of concealed weapons in national parks, they'd have been smart to note that Webb supports the bill as well.

According to Bloomberg: "He's pro-gun ownership, and he takes a harder line on illegal immigration than many Senate Republicans."

But he is against the war, and having one senator with a son serving in the military can't be a bad thing...

webb is also pro-universal healthcare. So therefore the Dems will ignore him

I predict that Webb will not find much of a following on fakeLeft outfits like Alternet. The fakeLefties care little for trueLeftists like Webb. Webb cares about things that most average americans care about--taxing the rich, getting universal healthcare, stopping mass immigration, etc.

But the fakelefties are all about race and gender. Webb should be the 2008 for president. But the fakeLefties will put into some overclasser like Kerry, Edwards, Clinton, etc.

BTW, I almost brushed up against Webb more than 25 years ago on board the USS Kitty Hawk. He was Secretary of the Navy or something like that. His wife was hot!

What do "liberal" and "conservative" even mean these days?

Webb's with the right on immigration, but I think gun control's an issue that was never a core belief of the left -- we picked it up in response to an explosion of gun violence in the late 1980s and abandoned it, to a large degree, in recent years. Platforms change. Am I "not a liberal" because I've basically given up on federal gun control laws (I still support cities' rights to deal with their gun violence issues)?

The fact is that Webb is considerably to the left of the Democratic mainstream on economic issues, and also opposed the Virginia gay marriage ban.

If you missed it, check out Webb's Wall Street Journal op-ed titled, simply “Class Struggle.” He doesn't sound like a not-liberal to me.

Whether Webb is a DINO or not, I would have loved to see him flatten our braying jackass of a President! At least he's against the Iraq war and for universal health care. Don't expect southerners to elect anyone who's too liberal. It's not gonna happen, however much we may wish it.

It was a brave and a righteous thing for Webb to do. The disrespect for the office of the president is a bit uncomfortable, but bush doesn't merit the respect. I look forward to
feeling pride and respect for the office holder again.

I HOPE THAT MR. WEBB'S SON AND EVERYONE ELSE'S SON, GETS TO COME HOME SOON, SAFE AND SOUND.

PEACE.

An attractive young woman wants to go spend a week by herself hiking in our National Parks. Or maybe jogging during the afternoon. 98% of those woman, mindful of past instances of horrific violence (rape, torture and murder) by male predators in our national parks, dismiss this option out of hand. Just as they live a large portion of their normal lives at home under a self-imposed curfew.

Give that woman a concealed legal handgun, which she knows how to handle, and that percentage of fear-based behavior would drop substantially. It would also substantially drop (maybe literally as well as figuratively) the number of male predators in our national parks.
God forbid that we allow that to happen. Must keep being a Liberal. Must keep being a Liberal. Keep repeating. Na Na Na, I can't HEAR YOU! I AM A LIBERAL! (Pst: I just want the military to own all the guns. The military is good. No, wait, it is bad. I mean, well......I CAN"T HEAR YOU! I AM A LIBERAL!)

Here is a newsflash for liberals who advocate gun control: Criminals are already armed with concealed weapons. (Or often with just superior physical strength.) Restricting the right of average people to ensure their own personal safety, which effectively sentences a large number of Americans to self-enforced curfews, fear and insecurity, is Exhibit #1 why so many average Americans will have nothing to do with anyone who calls themselves a "liberal." They rightly understand, on the most basic gut level, that liberals, including the Hollywood crowd living in gated communities financed by all those movies glorifying the gun culture, have basic contempt for the average American who cannot afford elaborate security systems, private (well-armed) security guards, armoured limos and private jets.

If liberals could get over their pathological hatred of private ownership of guns, and also combined this with a relentless struggle to end our self-destructive War on Drugs, I think they might find a much larger number of Americans who would be interested in listening to what they have to say.

If Webb can't stand bush, why should he pretend to respect him? It doesn't appear Webb will be your standard ass kisser, but time will tell.

I am a liberal. I own a gun. I have a concealed carry permit. I am female. When I took my permit class, it was brought home to me exactly how much trouble it is for an honest person to carry a gun in pocket, purse or vehicle. Each state has its own version of the law - what is legal in one state may become illegal as you drive across the border to the next state. But the very scariest part is what can happen to YOU after you shoot that perp dead. His berieved relatives can file a wrongful death action and sue you for every cent you've got, and they may very well win - even if you are not criminally charged. At least they can in Arizona. As my concealed weapons teacher said, "Remember, every bullet in that gun comes with a little tiny lawyer attached to it."

Democrats need

a party of leaders who will stand up to Republican hypocrats, not necessarily in polite terms (is it polite to kill thousands for no reason? They don't deserve consideration or courtesy.) The Dems will do well if they call a spade a spade (I could think of more appropriate things to call Bush and his flunkees, but it would probably get me thrown off of Alternet). Look what being "nice" got John Kerry. Take off the gloves permanently.

As a Virginian who supported Webb from a down and out, no chance in hell race against the racist Allen, we are thrilled he is where he is. You have no idea what a cataclysmic event this was in our state (and the nation!) Let's give the guy some credit for coming from waaaaaaaay behind, winnning, and now willing to speak truth to a man who does not seem to know the meaning of the word.
