Dem rock-star Barack Obama called for a "gradual withdrawal" of U.S. forces, without a firm end date, "linked to conditions on the ground in Iraq and based on the advice of U.S. commanders."

Could you get any mushier?

And the troops aren't necessarily coming home. To where might they withdrawal? "He proposed redeploying troops to Northern Iraq and to other countries in the region."

God bless Obama, but I don't think he's really getting this whole withdrawal concept.

I actually have heard one analyst suggest that the U.S. could pull its troops into the relatively friendly Kurdish-controlled areas in the hope of salvaging something. If the Baker Commission is considering whether to "go long," "go deep" or "go home," this plan would be "go build a tree-house and hide from the bad guys."

Anyway, while some people I respect favor a gradual withdrawal without a specific end date, it seems to me that it would be the worst of both worlds; it decreases U.S. forces' ability to keep major battles from breaking out but it doesn't give the Iraqi government the boost in legitimacy that a date-certain might -- might -- give it (especially if we have them demand it) and it doesn't provide Iraqis a guarantee that the U.S. won't maintain some permanent bases in the country.

Digg!

I don't know much about Barak Obama to estimate where his support is or will be coming from, but that Irak's 'Kurdistan' is to be an integral part of the game of allegiances and resources to be dispensed to keep Turkey on our side, and Israel well supplied of oil and other stuff from the strategic Caucasus, I am quite sure. It's not coming on the way they planned it, but 'partition' was always a sweet thought. Now, if they would only obey!

The Minister to the United States for Kurdistan was on Fareed Zakaria's PBS show Foreign Exchange last Sunday. He said that the Kurds would welcome a permanent US presence there. Obviously the Kurds would benefit from security against Shia and Sunni guerilla war, and against Turkish designs on hegemony a la Cyprus. The US would benefit from the Kurds' resources which includes 9 BILLION Bbls. of oil reserves. Sounds like a marriage made in heaven, doesn't it? So, of course, W will screw it up.

on the dem ticket, so that is why he has come out with a foreign affairs plan to overcome his newness to his job. He did a poor job of the whole thing. Ihave a feeling he does well when he believes what he is saying and does badly when he doesn't, but then that could change with practice. LOL

Just look at Hitlery, she has it down to a science. I wish DEAN WOULD RUN AGAIN. I don't want anyone anymore picked by the elite to represent the two parties and that is what happened with Kerry.

How about Feingold or someone with integrity. Why can't we make that decision at our level and go to the caucuses and vote for our man. Lets think about who and then work like heck on the net to do it. I think it can be done. After all, its up to us to take this damn country back isn't it?????? Who else if not us????

and i would say from living in the heart of the surgery of rebulicanism that the democrats here are lazy , they dont answer the phones and persue questions...really --only durbins office does , which seems like a revelation considering the promises the democrates have-----obamas good fortune lies in giving sooooo much to other canidates--- and because of that their willingness to give him favor...the simple message aught to be brought to the public that money buys people......

HELLO PEOPLE

durbin is worth watching in an ethical sense..;.he will propose serious arguments...obama is wet and sensitive to campaign contributions .....the most effective performance of government election reform will come in accord by, not electing obama, but by telling jan shakaowksy and luis gutirerrez that they are responsible for the fiasco in the congress (lets not mention rahms effect which is, in my
opinion -- bad for the dems)

This is why politicians need to stay out of military planning. Civilians mucking around got us in this war, effed up the occupation and now, for an encore, will muck up the withdrawal.

Here's how it is supposed to work: the civilian authorities define what they wish to have done and the boundaries while the military draws up the plan within those boundaries. I don't like political Generals and don't like politicians playing General.

Civvies mucking around has caused trouble ever since the creation of the DoD. Truman told Mac that he could only bomb the southern half of bridges between North Korea and China. Johnson's meddling was legendary as was Nixon's in Vietnam. Carter micromanaged the Iran Hostage Rescue and probably doomed it when he made changes for service-rivalry reasons (Army SF & AF Special Ops forced to include sailors & Marines for a land and air based rescue mission by a Naval Academy Grad-go figure).

Reagan wisely stayed out of operations much of the time, but deployed troops illegally inside Nicaragua from Hondo. Bush I's wisest decision was to let Centcom do what it was designed to do within the boundary box of the coalition.

Clinton's hands are all over the policies in Somalia that resulted in the Black Hawk Down incident. On balance, he did very well in the former Yugoslavia and elsewhere.

Bush II and the rest of his Troika (Dick & Don) have broke all records for mucking around in every aspect of military ops and planning that are usually the non-political purview of Generals and Admirals.

When politicians take the bait and start playing General, they should automatically be disqualified from service on any Committee or Sub-Committee with oversight of Defense or Foreign Policy. Barak Obama took the bait. Buzzzzzzzzzzzz...
Next contestant, please.
