Steve Gilliard links to a rather alarming video promoting a bizarre Christian ritual/industry known as the purity ball (video right). They're like proms, complete with evening gowns, limos, slow dancing. The only difference is that Christian dads take their daughters. At the end of the evening, the girls pledge to hand their sexuality over to their dads until they can give themselves "as wedding gifts" to their future husbands.

When Mark Foley flirts with 16-year-olds, it's a national scandal. When Christian dads do it, it's called "showing Godly affection."

EXTREMELY creepy.

And how very misogyinistic that daughters must "hand over" their sexuality exclusively to their fathers... not BOTH of their parents... only to "give" it to their husbands. Yeah, I guess those silly women.. neither daughters nor mothers.. can be trusted with anything as important as their "sexuality". Why not just bring back forcing women to wear chastity belts?

Have they even bothered with anything similar for their sons???

If the future of the world is going to be even halfway bright and civilized, religion and its wingnut medieval flunkies must be marginalized and monitored. If sons had to pledge their virgiinty to their mommies at these balls the whole country would freak out. What a filthy patriarchal double standard.

You're a thing, not a person.

These dads are telling their daughters that they're objects to be bartered. How completely disgusting to have a father so involved with your sex life, and to know that you're nothing but chattel he wants to own and control. This is a serious violation of personal boundaries.

This is just WRONG on so many levels. The real shame of it is that the girls that participate in these things are more likely to have anal and oral sex than their non-zealot peers, and more likely to expose themselves to disease by not using condoms.

I'm so angry I want to scream. American women have to wake up and face this disaster, please. It is an invitation to a crime, dangerous and mean like a terror threat. One in four women is abused, are these fathers claiming this privilege for themselves here? I've not been abused ever, but this gives me the creeps. Am I paranoid or what's going on here?

This is absolutely unbelievable. These religeous zealots will stop at nothing, when it comes to thinking of ways to molest their own dau.'s, under the guise of something like this. Well let me tell you all that I grew up as an Amish boy and the same type of attitude was displayed among the Amish fathers as well. If any of want to do some research on the Amish, you will find that molestation of children in a lot those communities are rampant. I am living proof to that. I am 56 years old now, but that is something I've had to deal with all my life.

So these "white" Born Agains, "date" their daughters, and afterwards, I'm wondering, how many go out and screw around with some other person's son?

We are apes, that is why apes chase off the young males and keep the females close by. It is instinctive and folks desperately want to believe they have intellects and free will rather than a evolutionary need to procreate and maintain one's personal gene pool. Its nice to blanket yourself with superstition like religion as well, makes for a pleasant rose colored view of the world. Put an electrode on each of these guys penises and all will register a turgid state of some degree when you even mention their daughters. Its evolution, its instinctive, its apelike and people hate Freud for telling us so.

Why does chastity anger people?

Why is it wrong for fathers to want their daughters to remain chaste until marriage (and have a ritual to celebrate that) but okay for girls to be whores for every Tom, Dick and Harry, get herpes or venereal warts or end up pregnant by nasty men, who need to get their rocks off? Why is it okay for you to blast fathers, wanting to protect their daughters, but when heterosexuals attack homosexual marriage, homosexuality or anything else the left agrees with, they are being fascists, racist homophobes? Why not proscribe to each his own and let others define their own God and rituals of integrity or none? Who in the hell died and made you god of how people raise their kids? When the girl gets knocked up, herpes or HIV, where will you be? Not there to pick up the darn pieces, you hypocrites. Why the double standard with liberals?

I meant to add that extracting a promise like this before the kid even IS a sexual being is simply ILL. It means nothing without choice, and there can BE no choice at such a point in her development.
